Is a mouse/keyboard combo really, truly superior to controllers to the point that there is no possible competition?
Among just controllers (xbox one, 360, ds3, ds4, steam, etc), is there a similar hierarchy (some being objectively better than others)?
Apparently there is no distinct advantage to using fightsticks or any particular controller over another when it comes to fighting games. This is backed by the fact that all major competitions allow any form of stick/gamepad and are not segregated by input type.
Similarly most people say there is no advantage one way or the other over using a controller, keyboard, or driving wheel when it comes to racing games.
So it just leaves shooters. And does it apply as much to third-person shooters as it does to first-person shooters? Do you have any hard facts/statistics to back up the claim that in a contest of two equally-skilled people, one on KBM & one on any given gamepad, the KBM user will always win?

It honestly depends on the game. For FPS, K&M is superior, so much so that some companies don't let console gamers and PC gamers play together because K&M players have an advantage.

I want you to go on your desktop and click on an icon. You used a mouse to do that. Everyone who does that on a desktop PC will use a mouse to do that. The mouse has become the unanimous computer device for accurate user input. I want you to consider why that's the case instead of something like the icontroller.
Charles Wright
Generally speaking Keyboard and Mouse are superior to controllers in an FPS. KBM > Steam controller > Other controllers The gyro and touchpad even out the competition a bit when it comes to aiming.
For other games that aren't heavily mouse driven it depends on how well the game supports the input method, what the user's preferences are and what kind of KBM combo is being used.

For most RPGs it doesn't really matter. Except for some like dark souls
Gavin Ortiz
I played dark souls with keyboard only because it always bothered me that you can't and turn the camera at the same time on a controller.

Idk I've never actually played a soulsborne gamebut I just based it on what other people say

Turn based strategy it doesn't make a lick of difference, besides perhaps ease of use. Controllers are preferable for racing games, and some people prefer them in platforms.

I have a Logitech F710 and have noticed that the right trigger seems to always be bouncing around in the slightly pressed area, resulting in some games occasionally acting like its pushed when its not. A recent example would be NieR with the character sometimes dashing around on its own.
Anyone know a way to fix this? I tried just using xinput plus to give it a deadzone but that didn't work. Is there another software option? If not what could I do to repair the hardware.

But that doesn't change the point he made. There is a reason one is used as the standard for computer input and one is not.

Depends on the games you're playing.
If you're playing fighting games, a fight stick is going to be your best bet. For racing games, obviously wheel/pedal systems are best. If you're playing anything that requires any sense of precision and fast movement (RTS/FPS/ARTS/etc) then KB+M is best.
If you're just playing a 3D single player RPG? Sometimes a controller is just more comfortable (and these days can actually add in a bit of handicap to add some much needed difficulty).

Controllers are best for;
Beatemups Platform games Racing games Sport sims Emulation
KB/M is objectively superior for everything else, including third person games.

Don't listen to memers who say mechanical keyboards are better. They don't input your keypresses faster than a membrane keyboard. They do last longer than membrane keyboards, but they also cost more than membrane keyboards by so much that buying like 5 membrane keyboards will cost less than a mechanical keyboard, and the combined lifespan of those 5 keyboards is longer than a mechanical keyboard. The clickety clacking will also drive you insane. Especially when it's someone else in a multiplayer game with a microphone and a mechanical keyboard.
Bentley Davis
>They don't input your keypresses faster Technically they do. They require less force on actuation, and unlike membranes actuate at the halfway point rather than all the way down. Is it noticeably faster? Not by much. It can net you some additional speed in an RTS though since you can more easily ride the actuation point and get faster double taps.
>Buying 5 membrane keyboards will cost less than a mechanical keyboard You can easily get cheap mechanicals for like 80 on sales. You don't need a super expensive one.

that's just wrong

you should have a controller, kb/m, wheel and pedals, fighting stick, and hotas kit in your tool box and use the right tool for the job. the result is unlimited fun.
