you are supposed to be hu-man only in the intro castel and the end sequence, since the hu-man doesnt have special abilities.

If playing as the girl opens new paths in the levels i'm all up for it but nowadays this shit is done for political reasons and adds nothing but brownie points from people that doesnt even play games.

Actually the series is called "Monster World" in Japan, and the "Wonder Boy" thing was something they did in America, likely to sell more copies.
Monster World IV came out way back in 1994 and had a female protagonist ONLY. So you can take your "political reasons" and shove it.
