I wish they finally finished that HoM&M2 visuals mod, it's the only thing missing that would make HoM&M3 perfect.

Never played these games but I like turn based strategy so it sounds interesting. Should I start with 2 or is 1 also worth playing?

I don't think you'll miss out on much by starting with 2 its got a great campaign.

1 is very, very old now. But I still like it. No real reason to play it first though.

I remember when I was younger I got the HoMM 3 pack. 1,2, and 3. 3 did not have expansions, and I could never fucking find those in stores. It was only like five year ago when I bought it on GoG that I finally got to play the expansions.

I actually like Nival but man imagine if it wasn't an Ubisoft game.

Just saw that HoMM3HD program that allows you to run the game at higher resolutions and I imagine better modern system support. Is there anything like that for 2? Also I read that the GoG versions include the original Windows exes but are they playable on Windows 7 or are they like 16 bit or something and not work?

Yea, H5 was a miracle really. After which ubi thoroughly butchered the series.

Windows 7 handles 16 bit applications just fine. It's Win10 that has issues.

I feel like there's not much to do in singleplayer in HoMM 3. You can a)do campaigns which relies on abusing shit (like blind-revive, expert frenzy, force field single stack of shooters) b)do single maps (but since in HoMM 3 races have more difference based on numbers not abilities, and that diminishes difference between races for casual/medium play)
But I abandoned even 5.5 for now, fuck playing catch with single computer hero for WHOLE FUCKING WEEK.

I actually didn't know this until pretty recently but you still have to actually go in and change a setting for it to work. But do the HoMM games run natively on Windows 7 (other than 3 with that HD mod) or is DOSbox necessary?

HoMM2 will run fine on win7 with the windows version.

Did every HoM&M game had a recreation of the Broken Alliance map or did they do that for HoM&M6 only?

Says the version of the file isn't compatible with the version of the OS I'm using. Same error I get with some other old games. This is without DOSBox in case I wasn't being clear before.

Are you using the proper Windows version or trying to run the .EXE of the DOS version?

Try running in compatibility mode.

Not sure actually. The GoG version apparently comes with both DOS and Windows exe files but I only have one executable in my folder. What confuses me is I often see games that are recommended to be run from DOS but they say they'll run in Windows too and I prefer running native over running in an emulator if possible. It's not a big deal but it would be nice to not have to use DOSBox.

Might try it later but compatibility modes almost never work.
