I'm tired of this meme and lazy soundtracks. You can have ambient music that is catchy and actually has leitmotifs. Just look at the metroid series. Games like Breath of the Wild have an extremely disappointing soundtrack, and I hate when games like Ico get praised when they were too lazy to even make a sountrack for most of the game and just added a bunch of wind and bird sound effects for "muh ambience" and got praised for it.
Perfect Dark and Goldeneye had near perfect soundtracks.

AAA dev here. Every studio I've worked at, literally no one gave a single fuck about the soundtrack. It always comes in super late in production, they only ever start thinking about it if they're going to demo gameplay at a show, and it's always done by some outsourced hack that no one in the studio ever sees face to face. We just end up with some tracks in our lap one day, then the audio guys implement it and it's done.
It's really depressing. I think Western devs legitimately don't get that people care about the soundtrack in games.
