The reason is Sony actually stocked the stores The Switch is Still sold out a Month later. They could've had a chance but under stocking made it impossible to be competitive nintendo shot themselves in the foot again.

Skyward Sword didn't sell that well either considering the circumstances. Nintendo have pushed out so many shitty Zelda games in the last 10 or so years that the brand doesn't hold much value anymore.

This also might be a case where "good game that's a sequel to a bad game sells worse", just like "bad game that's a sequel to a good game still sells better" is a thing that happens.

Horizon Zero Dawn sold TWICE as many games as nintendo sold a brand new console with a brand new Zelda, a franchise that goes back decades.

Most sales of AAA games occur in the first two weeks, after that there's a huge drop. Given the current attachment rate of Zelda (102%) it will outsell it in the long run.
