FXIII itself wasnt really bad it was actually a pretty good game, the level design was nice, bosses were enjoyable and dont get me started on the Soundtrack.
the characters werent really deep but they did have some detail to them.
if it wasnt labeled Final Fantasy then it probably would have been a better game, it just didnt live up to its name>
speaking of which, i still have to beat Lightning Returns

apparently there was a reason for its linearness
i dont have the source anymore but toriyama wanted the early levels linear because of the characters.
each character was at their lowest point in the beginning of the game, leading to their eidolon fights( which was the fight against their inner self. metaphorically speaking)
so when all the characters settled their issue, the game opened up
