The community makes minecraft the powerhouse it is.
No other sandbox in the same vein as minecraft has all the modding support, custom creations, textures, skins, maps, youtube entertainment that minecraft does, so they can't succeed against it. It's too big to fail at this point, and it would take one hell of a glacier to stop it.

It's pathetic to think it's the case, but there's people out there living the minecraft life. They play it all day, they worship youtubers who make a living off the game, they listen to minecraft parody music, buy minecraft toys and clothes, make minecraft items in real life. Kids are raised on this game these days.

How's it different? Well I guess the manner in which you build things is more abstracted since you just give orders rather than do it yourself. But that will be fixed later when you'll be able to dig in adventure mode.

Most people play modded MC to flex their engineering boner. How good is the engineering in dorf fort? I know it has some, but is it particularly in depth?
MC automation is about shit like "I need to make a fusion reactor, so I will need like 10k iron, 5k platnium, 2k iridium, and like 2000 other ingredients, so let me put together shit to make each part"

Modded minecraft is an engineering game first and foremost, but it can also be literally anything you want.
Tons of incredibly in-depth content mods, many of which are completely different.
There's mods that add lua programmable computers, eldritch magic systems, shitloads of autism stuff.

DF is comparable in flavor of autism to vanilla minecraft, but thousands of times richer, not to modded.

Factorio was inspired by tekkit classic, or so I've heard.

My dad once played on a Feed The Beast (Minecraft with a shitton of mods) server.
He developed a refinery to the point where he had a direct line to Hell for power, using liquid Tesseract and a lot of pipes

This is definitely something modded minecraft lacks. It's engineering comes in the form of item routing and production automation. Sadly, in-world mechanics are often neglected, or only used as a form of crafting. I think this is largely due to how retardedly minecraft handles liquids, the source block and stream systems are garbage

Valkyrien Warfare was one that was recently released, though there have been several ones over the years.
And fuck do I ever miss frames.
