The quality of Hussie's writing can be considered inconsistent at best but Cohen's writing and humor is pure garbage.

Hussie was able to illicit a chuckle occasionally and the first few acts of HS were interesting enough but this other hack is offensively bland. If he truly is in charge of the game's writing then it will be irredeemably shit, I guarantee it.

Compared to other webcomics, Homestuck was at its prime probably THE most popular webcomic ever

While Homestuck turned into a fucking mess at the end, the game is one thing that makes me feel bad for Hussie. Contractor using the money for something else or not doing their work is always terrible.

Hussie is good at humour, as is evident by his earlier works. But unlike Problem Sleuth or Jailbreak, Homestuck has actual characters and dialog, which makes it easier to relate to. The character writing is also pretty Tumblr, before the site had the insane stigma.
It also has pretty nice powerfantasy animations coupled with cool music.

Several factors.

Look at its competition. The next most popular webcomic may very well be Questionable Content. Jeph was making 6 figs off of it BEFORE his patreon. Hussie isn't really up against a lot

Then the fact that like any popular thing Hussie found a way to mass produce OCs in the trolls and to some extent the teenage humans

And the easy marketing. Take a bunch of thousand year old symbols change the color of them and sell them for massive fucking profit.

Which leads into the next thing which is production value; take all that money and reinvest it into animation and you can brag that your webcomic is the only one with multiple 5+ minute long full animations

I remember Homestuck being a huge thing and tried getting into it - I managed to get into Act 3 but to be honest it was way too confusing, all over the place and I had no idea what was going on at all. I enjoyed some things a lot, but not enough to keep going.

I also have to note it's been some years I read it and English isn't my first language, back then I some parts weren't that easy to understand. Maybe it was because of that, too.

Act 3 was almost my dropping point. Act 5 was well worth the investment of the first four acts, and it started to come together towards the middle of Act 4. Just be aware that if you attempt it again, Act 4 is long as shit and your mileage may vary on the Act 3 intermission

I didn't particularly like them as characters and Hussie kept dropping these massive chatlogs in each update. At that point I just dropped it.

It's a bit of a mixed bag really. I'd say the biggest draw I had when I read it was the overall community waiting to see what was coming up. Hussie was really good at creating stuff like the Flash animations and the world building, so it was legitimately easy to invest in it.

Now that the entire comic is out there, I'm not sure if it succeeds as an overall story. Now it's up to speculation what could happen instead of what he may do.

That said, Hussie made some pretty stylish panels and flashes throughout the run and was entertaining. So I dunno.

Basically, at that point any pretense of pacing was lost and Hussie just decided to milk his fanbase as long as possible. Neither troll nor new kids where central to the eventual plot resolution. Basically everything after the end of act 5 is filler, and there is quite a bit of it after act 3 too
