Console games are slowly moving in the direction of mobile games too. More focus on online-only gameplay, paid subscriptions, microtransactions out the ass, even in single-player games. Shit like Overwatch is just the beginning, we'll see more and console games adopt the mobile model, games that are designed to incentivize microtransactions and nothing more.

No, Microsoft has shipped 30 million since launch, millions are still on store shelves. 30 million have not been sold-through to actual people, MS stopped releasing those numbers years ago. We had Gamestop and EA saying it was actually only around 15m sold when MS's shipped numbers said something like 23m.

Honest opinion. Interesting. Less boring than last. Each company is trying new things. Sony got its VR out and Res VII is absolutely majestic played in VR mode. Nintendo gave us two consoles that both tried new stuff OK the Wii U with its awful pad was kind of a mess but Nintendo went back refined the idea and came back with the fun Switch (they also made carts sexy again). Microsoft is coming out with a fucking beast of a machine with its Scorpio.

Most from Japanese developers though. And those games will keep getting less and less profitable fro western developers/publishers, that's the point. The market is shrinking, not growing. Console publishers are exploring these new models, they're seeing if what works with F2P PC games and mobileshit will work on consoles.

Blizzard just figured out they could sell a F2P shooter for $60 and still make half a billion with cosmetics. That's the future for these big publishers, traditional AAA development isn't sustainable and its starting to show. I think the trends we've seen in the last ten years or so support this, more and more effort to monetize what wasn't monetized before, cutting corners due to inflated development and marketing costs, increasing focus on online-online play in which the publisher can sell you shit and has complete control over your experience while cutting most forms of local play.

It's more that companies are trying to make video games into a service and utility. That's been the end game in forever. Being a industry vet myself, the one thing that they wanted to solve was making game development reliable business. Despite making huge amounts of money, companies still go under. So they figured if they can culture people thinking they have to pay monthly for a game and buy its microtransactions, they would effectively have the golden egg. And that's what happened.

It's why I have not touched a modern game from those slimey companies sense. Destiny is an obvious trap, Netherrealm has become the same way, anything on Xbox or Sony I assume is microshit and I'm never wrong.

But they didn't, that's what they said about the DS. The 3DS isn't going away yet, that's all they said.

Destiny is another good example of a game testing the waters, the moment I knew it was online-only and had absolutely no offline or local MP, I lost interest. It existed solely as a vehicle with which to sell DLC.

I'm sure all these publishers want to end up in a place in which they all have their own Netflix-like streaming service, and unlike with TV and movies we won't have an alternative. It'll be that or you don't play any video games, there won't be physical copies to buy anymore.

The problem here is that these companies know what will happen if they completely abandon the traditional model, which is why they are in this sort of hybrid right now of console and service games. They can't let go of either cause both have too much money to make. In essence, it has fucked them up and really made the game industry frustrating.

Problem is that MS and Sony don't profit significantly from first party titles. They have a vested interest in maximising budgets, thus forcing publishers to sell at incredibly high volumes. Meanwhile Nintendo wants to keep budgets low, but competing with them is fucking horrid. out of the 10 games that the average consumer might buy Nintendo's gonna take at least five.

Thats because Nintendo advertises only itself and it would be stupid to embrace third parties and yet have them compete against all their mario games. I always knew why third parties dont want to be on nintendo consoles. And thats because they'll be competing against Nintendo's own interests of making the console Mario centric. Always been like that. And it helps more that they only focus on low power consoles so here we are.

nope. i played the beta years ago and it was shit. i play battlefield, gta, fifa or halo with them. the only reason to own a console is for friends. i play everything else on pc.

We will slowly see fewer and fewer new customers who want the traditional model though, that's also part of the problem. New players are being consistently conditioned to want these microtransaction and service models. There may not be enough of a pie for anyone to want to step in and take it.

My point is that games will be designed around incentivizing those purchases instead of just being good games.

Things like level design, enemy health/damage/etc., player movement, absolutely anything and everything about the game's design will be built around creating an experience that encourages the purchase of health packs, ammo or whatever through mirotransactions and gives the player an intentionally sub-par or less enjoyable experience without them.

Its exactly what mobile games already do, create an entertaining enough game to get people playing it and hook that tiny percentage of players that will play for a long time and pour money into those micro purchases.

So, you play with your friends alone, at home, while they're all also alone, at home? Why bother with an Xbox then?

Both console are garbage because the advantages to playing on a console, such as convenience and local MP, were all but done away with with the release of the Xbone and PS4. Few games have local MP, even fewer support LAN, online play is paid so you essentially have to pay a $60/y fee to play most of the big releases at all. They're shitboxes, PS3 and 360 still had some exclusives worth playing even if you had a PC. No reason to own either of these 8th gen console, they're just gimped PCs with few of the advantages of either consoles or PCs.

To add, only 8th gen platform I own is a Wii U, which was bought primarily for local MP games such as Smash and MK8. Why the fuck would I own a PS4 if I value local MP?

Sure, but it's the definitive edition of said games. At this point you're better off waiting for Scorpio anyway, but MCC alone guarantees dozens of hours of fun, which is worth the Xbone Slim at its current price. Add some 360 games that play better on xbone like RDR, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, etc via backwards compatibility and you have a solid console

Japanese support is going to move to the Switch though, It'll probably outsell the PS4 in Japan by the end of the year. PS4 is and will continue to be the worst Sony console, 8th gen is just comprised of the worst consoles all three makers have released. Far too many re-releases and genre fatigue, nothing aside from some Nintendo games have taken many risks at all or tried to push gameplay forward.

Sure, that emulated BC is nice, but I'd argue it should have just been done through hardware and at launch. We could have had a fully BC Xbone if MS hadn't gone full 1984 and decided to release a $200 spycam with the console instead, I think full 360 BC would have helped a lot early on. And I still have games like Lost Odyssey for 360, so again, all Xbone seems to offer me are games I already own and can still play on consoles I already own.

This, coupled with 8th gens general hostile attitude toward local and LAN play, is why I think it's a shitty console, same for PS4. Far too little that's actually new, and what is new often is just the same, tired shit we've had for 10 years, no one wants to take risks. The advantages consoles had over PCs are all but gone, they're just gimped PCs with paid online now.

3DS is six years old, it will be fading away soon enough, Switch is more than likely going to be the most popular platform in Japan after that. Japanese developers aren't obsessed with visual fidelity, the Switch is powerful enough to have "modern" looking games whereas 3DS was very limited by its hardware and 240p resolution. I think Japan will jump on it full-steam, as they can both develop games suited for consoles and their smaller budget games for handhelds.
