Start with IV. It's good, the story is alright. The music is A+ some of the best in the series, and the difficulty curve is kinda shit so it starts out hard but becomes easy later on so you don't hit a brick wall aside from 2 notorious ones. After that you can follow it up with Apoc, or Nocturne which everyone loves. I love SJ a lot but it's ahrd to rec it with a remake coming soon.

I was going to make a crack that Persona 5 hasn't even hit the million sales mark, but then I checked and SMT4A hasn't sold half of that.

I'm not happy about it, I never cared much for the school life of Persona.

Apoc is a psuedo sequel to IV but I wouldn't recommend starting with it.

Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, or Persona 3. Though the last two are not SMT, and Nocturne is very different from rest of the mainline games but they are all the best staring points for getting into Megaten.

IV is a good starting point, if you survive Naraku then you can handle the rest of the game. It has a sleek UI, fights are fast, and the music is 10/10. Furthermore it has a sequel (SMT4A) that improves on 4 immensely (quality of life improvements for days).

Nocturne is a classic, but it's also a departure from SMT as a whole. The gameplay is tight, the music is solid, and the atmosphere/art design is top notch. Unfortunately during the early 2000's Atlus was into fucking with their players, so be prepared for a fair bit of bullshit.

Strange Journey will kick your shit in/test your patience if it's your first SMT. You'll rely heavily on your demon's because the protagonist is REALLY unreliable (it means you gotta git gud at team building). It's a good game don't get me wrong, but some of the design choices are really wonky.

DDS 1 if you hate yourself. Jesus fuck the encounter rate. I like the game but it suffers from "tall grass" syndrome.

Go with nocturne. DSJ will be coming out soon and there probably won't be much of a reason to play the base game after that, unless the new artwork really triggers you

it's honestly pretty easy to navigate after some disorientation for the first few hours. I just explored everywhere when I first got to shinjuku, found the southern tunnel, and remembered to go back to it later.

granted 4A's map is obviously much nicer and much more user friendly but 4's map isn't the monstrosity people make it out to be

4A didn't sell well because A. it's a pseudo spinoff, and B. it wasn't backed by Nintendo like IV was.

And even then, it sold remarkably well for a SMT spinoff.

Man Persona would be the perfect game if they just made it more difficult. I managed to beat Persona 5 on hard and only died like 3 or 4 times and that only due to bullshit like hama or mudo connecting on me or I killed myslef because the enemy had reflect physical.

If you didn't get the True Demon Ending on Hard mode as your first playthrough, then you're a casual.

Anyway, Persona winning isn't that bad. It is a good game. It'll eventually lead to more original SMT titles. I'd love new something akin to the atmosphere of DDS1/2.
