They're not really that similar aside from being grid-based strategy games. Fire Emblem is more about building your characters while Advance Wars is more about resource management.

Be sure to play Days of Ruin and not Dark Conflict though. They're the same game with a different translation, and Dark Conflict's translation is mostly awful.

Opinion. Dark Conflict's translation is much more accurate. Days of Ruin has the typical NoA translation and makes up a lot. I still prefer DoR though.
European here and can confirm. They changed unit names for no reason, AW1-3 Fighters are suddenly called Interceptor while the new unit Duster is called Fighter for example, and I also feel the characters were a little too serious for AW, even with the more gritty theme of AW4.

Dark Conflict is more accurate but that doesn't make it any less terribly written. It's basically a bad anime fansub whereas Days of Ruin's writing flows really well and fleshes out the characters more. Both the jokes and drama are done better.
The names is actually the one area where Dark Conflict is in fact superior though. They used more clever and elaborate names for characters and concepts to go with the more serious setting, while Days of Ruin keeps the kids game naming conventions.

AWDS is very fun and keeps well with the spirit of the originals, though it feels like they lowered the bar a whole lot in terms of mission rankings. i was able to S-rank virtually every mission even in the hard campaign, but in AW1 i was lucky to S-rank less than half of them while going for the secret missions. AWDS is super fun but not so tight on balance and gameplay, owing to feature bloat. makes great use of the dual screens. very fun campaign, cool stat tracking. really makes it worth playing the games in order to appreciate the growth and expansion. i'll play AW2 again after i finish AW1 on the hard campaign, which i've never done. lord knows i couldn't even beat the first factory mission of AW2 hard campaign. difficulty in the early games is truly hellish.
one thing i can absolutely say for the series is the incredibly good music. it's a shame that AWDS terribly butchers most of the themes from AW1+2, but the new tracks are so good it evens itself out somewhat.
AWDOR is a massive, massive departure and i couldn't bring myself to play past the first few missions for the massive stylistic changes. kinda hurts not playing a game in the advance wars series but what're you gonna do, at least it gives me a good reason to play through them all again on a phone emulator.
This is pretty accurate. One thing I will never understand about DS is the tilted view. Even if you set up a game with as little DS bullshit as possible, you will still have that ugly view.
One example is that in Dark Conflict, the owl-themed faction has characters and weaponry named after cool-sounding latin terms that have to do with owls. In DoR the names either have no meaning or are named very bluntly. Their airship is called The Great Owl in DoR, while in DC it's called "The Pulsatrix".

It would have made more sense if it showed a neotank attacking an APC when something like missile or rockets is in range, but meteor strike's thing is it goes for the highest worth of units.

Best part about DoR is it made naval combat actually enjoyable instead of the snorefest it is in the earlier games.

Meteor goes by most wealth in an area with friendlies subtracting from that wealth total, just cause there's an infantry there it wouldn't not hit it.

Fire Emblem and Shining Force are absolutely phenomenal games, but they are not even remotely a replacement for Advance Wars.
As for Advance Wars
I find the first to be the best, it's difficult while still fair, and for multiplayer has a very simplistic pick up and play feel for newcomers.
Advance Wars 2 is also excellent but I feel like it's less pick up and play, and it's missing some of the charm of the first game, like the little animations that play when you win or lose a fight.
Dual Strike is objectively the worst but also by far the most fun due to how completely broken it is, it also has so much fucking content I still haven't unlocked everything to this day. It doesn't offer a challenge but it has insane casual fun where you get the most broken supers ever. Also has the best soundtrack.
Days of Ruin I just hate. It almost completely lacks the series identity, and the pick up and play aspect has now completely vanished, traded away in favor of balance. This game is only for esports faggots who take the games way too seriously, just play a 4X game instead of this.
It's a shame the AI is still too dumb to correctly attempt anything but land attacks. Any map that has you separated by water, it just sends a slow trickle of of one or two helicopters are landers at time; it remind of the campaign missions in old Command & Conquer games.

What are the worst units? Sea planes? I used those all the time. On fog of war maps they're awesome for doing fly-bys of cities and forests to scout targets for battleships.

Days of Ruin's units are too balanced compared to each other to the point where every single move has to be thought it. In previous games you could just rush tanks and be an idiot and still have fun.

There isn't a single mission in the entire series that takes more than 20 turns for a competent player to beat (HC excluded). The vast majority can be done in 10 or less.
Because not everything is esports bullshit. You're playing against the computer. The units themselves don't need to be balanced as long as the maps are properly designed.

Seems strange to dismiss an entire category of units you don't have much choice over using. There are limits over how far air units can project on most maps. They and unescorted landers get chewed up easily by naval units over the sea.
Spamming neotanks is boring regardless of whether you're playing computer or not. So are CO powers that fully negate the actual tactical gameplay. Competent game design doesn't make something "esports" and the worst parts where DS in particular fails to balance its design have nothing to do with multiplayer.
I don't play multiplayer at all but I'd imagine it's also not fun for new players to have their defeat predetermined by not picking broken COs, so I still don't understand how that makes it approachable to beginners.

It always felt like an absurdly strong defensive option for moment when your base was getting assaulted. Not to mention that you usually need a pretty high cost unit to effectively take it out.

I'm playing DS right now, it's my first advance wars game, I think it's WAY more balanced than any of the fire emblem games I've played.
I've thought this for the longest time myself. At the very least, it sounds very close to Radiant Dawn. Codename STEAM had the same composer as Days of Ruin too and it also had some very Radiant Dawn sounding pieces.

Antitank loses hard to any foot soldier, which you almost always have in abundance anyway. It's a fun tech that checks small vehicle/helicopter spam.

Fire Emblem is not a strategy game, it's a tactical game where none of your units can ever be allowed to die(unless you're a casual). Of fucking course this means the gameplay has to be heavily stacked in your favour or it would just be a frustrating endless mess of reloads and RNG(it already is that on the highest difficulties, but it would have been even worse).
Advance Wars puts you on relatively even ground with the enemy, you can build the same units as them for the same prices and they are equally powerful. In return you are allowed to make huge mistakes as long as you win in the end.
And that's where DS has a problem, it gives you a bunch of tools such as level-up abilities and double CO powers which can make you overwhelmingly more powerful than the opponents can handle. That's what breaks the balance.
Another big difference between FE and AW is that AW is supposed to also be balanced for multiplayer.
If I had to say anything, I wish CO powers weren't a thing. Sometimes they feel rather random, or I guess a better statement would be unpredictable. They haven't bothered me too much yet, but still.

Not really. None of the eight games prior to DoR are much good for balanced multiplayer.

Days of Ruin balances them out at the cost of making them kind of boring. Most of DoR's CO powers are just damage/defence buffs.
That's my main problem with DS; the game ends up being more about timing your CO skills than what's actually going on in the map. DoR neuters most of the CO powers and gives you passive area effect skills while the CO powers build to disincentivize actually using them when you can help it.
