Just started playing Advance Wars and want to know Sup Forums's opinion since I have a pathetic need for vindication. Is there one for 3ds or anything modern or should I jump into Fire Emblem as a substitute?

Why would you go to Fire Emblem if you just started playing? The two series aren't really alike besides both being my Intelligent systems.

Advance Wars is good
Advance Wars 2 is perfect
Advance Wars DS is eh
Advance Wars Days of Ruin will either be your favorite or your most hated but everything but the final boss is pretty damn balanced-ish

No, Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict is the last AW game and that one is for the DS.

I've only played Awakening and I liked it and just wanted to know if any of them are like Advance Wars.

This is truth.
Btw I loved Dark Conflict/Days of Ruin, best entry in the series.
>dat final battle tho

There's a blatant ripoff coming out for Switch. It's more shameless than Great Giana Sisters and has Tumblr art but at this point I'd take anything.

>asking for opinions when just started playing the game
Why does Sup Forums do this.

Sup Forums used to like it Idk if they still do.

>tfw this triggers you because Meteor Strike doesn't work like that

They're not really that similar aside from being grid-based strategy games. Fire Emblem is more about building your characters while Advance Wars is more about resource management.

I said I'm pathetic and need vindication what else do you want? It's actually the social media generation killing all personal thought.

It's just a joke about how much the AI hates APCs

Yeah but they could've made a joke that actually works

Play all the AW games in order.

Be sure to play Days of Ruin and not Dark Conflict though. They're the same game with a different translation, and Dark Conflict's translation is mostly awful.

The joke works, your brain doesn't due to autism.

I always want to like these tactics games but I'm just so bad at them and can never get far at all, are there any that are childishly easy?

Opinion. Dark Conflict's translation is much more accurate. Days of Ruin has the typical NoA translation and makes up a lot. I still prefer DoR though.

European here and can confirm. They changed unit names for no reason, AW1-3 Fighters are suddenly called Interceptor while the new unit Duster is called Fighter for example, and I also feel the characters were a little too serious for AW, even with the more gritty theme of AW4.

Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright, Easy/Phoenix Mode. Your fallen units return in the next turn.

You could just play non-campaign maps with one of the broken COs.

I'm glad someone cleared this up. I was never sure which translation to pick.

Dark Conflict is more accurate but that doesn't make it any less terribly written. It's basically a bad anime fansub whereas Days of Ruin's writing flows really well and fleshes out the characters more. Both the jokes and drama are done better.

The names is actually the one area where Dark Conflict is in fact superior though. They used more clever and elaborate names for characters and concepts to go with the more serious setting, while Days of Ruin keeps the kids game naming conventions.

>They used more clever and elaborate names for characters and concepts to go with the more serious setting, while Days of Ruin keeps the kids game naming conventions.
elaborate

AWDS is very fun and keeps well with the spirit of the originals, though it feels like they lowered the bar a whole lot in terms of mission rankings. i was able to S-rank virtually every mission even in the hard campaign, but in AW1 i was lucky to S-rank less than half of them while going for the secret missions. AWDS is super fun but not so tight on balance and gameplay, owing to feature bloat. makes great use of the dual screens. very fun campaign, cool stat tracking. really makes it worth playing the games in order to appreciate the growth and expansion. i'll play AW2 again after i finish AW1 on the hard campaign, which i've never done. lord knows i couldn't even beat the first factory mission of AW2 hard campaign. difficulty in the early games is truly hellish.
one thing i can absolutely say for the series is the incredibly good music. it's a shame that AWDS terribly butchers most of the themes from AW1+2, but the new tracks are so good it evens itself out somewhat.

AWDOR is a massive, massive departure and i couldn't bring myself to play past the first few missions for the massive stylistic changes. kinda hurts not playing a game in the advance wars series but what're you gonna do, at least it gives me a good reason to play through them all again on a phone emulator.

This is pretty accurate. One thing I will never understand about DS is the tilted view. Even if you set up a game with as little DS bullshit as possible, you will still have that ugly view.

One example is that in Dark Conflict, the owl-themed faction has characters and weaponry named after cool-sounding latin terms that have to do with owls. In DoR the names either have no meaning or are named very bluntly. Their airship is called The Great Owl in DoR, while in DC it's called "The Pulsatrix".

the original advance wars are good games

the 'realistic' one, I don't even know what the fuck its called, has the ridiculous hybrid vehicle

call of duty normies like it, it's not a real entry in the series. if you really want more advance wars play valkyria chronicles, its a completely different game, but at least has the same aesthetic

>call of duty normies like it
you're so out of touch with reality my friend

Why does every Sup Forums thread have to have autism posts

>call of duty normies like it,
they don't even know what that game is, you autist.

No, but you can play every singe one on a 3ds in some form or fashion.

It would have made more sense if it showed a neotank attacking an APC when something like missile or rockets is in range, but meteor strike's thing is it goes for the highest worth of units.
Jokes are supposed to make sense fucking retard.

It does make sense, you are just clearly too stupid to get it.

Meteor doesn't target your own units and there's an 1 HP infantry next to the tanks.

Yes in reality the meteor would have just targeted most of the tanks while avoiding the infantry, but that's not fucking funny you autist.

Valkyria Chronicles is more like Batallion Wars than like Advance Wars.

are you at least aware that a normie is not aware that it is a normie?

if I call you a normie, do you agree? of course not, but you are, and will never be able to see that you are a recent adopter of this hobby. if you are under the age of 30, you are technically a recent adopter of this hobby

and you are, because you prefer the visual style of realism which was only introduced recently into gaming, in other words, a call of duty normie, this has nothing whatsoever to do with whether the two types of players are 'aware' of each other

I'll give you a hint for discovering hypocrisy, if you feel a powerful emotion, that means you are the only one who is subject to it, it only exists in your own soul, not in the person who is prompting it

Best part about DoR is it made naval combat actually enjoyable instead of the snorefest it is in the earlier games.

>Battleships can fire after moving
>B-Copters nerfed so they don't rule the seas as well as the skies
>MOTHERFUCKING SEAPLANES

>you are just clearly too stupid to get it
>he says while he himself doesn't get it
Meteor goes by most wealth in an area with friendlies subtracting from that wealth total, just cause there's an infantry there it wouldn't not hit it.

>accurate is always better

good localization can improve on a game, especially with how shit the scripts of many jap games are

user we don't appreciate autistic breakdowns in AW threads, I'm going to have to ask you to leave.

I said in the very same post that I prefer DoR though.

It's a shame this series is dead.

What would you do for a hypothetical sequel?

>calls people normies
>uses reddit spacing in posts
>uses the word 'normie'
self hating normalfags go home

I spent most of the game wishing there was an option to load that fucker into one of my artillery cannons and launch his stupid face at an enemy tank.

Agreed, but they are still the worst units. Making them cheaper would make them even more useful, I think.

I'd do anything for AW5, but I won't do that.

Fire Emblem and Shining Force are absolutely phenomenal games, but they are not even remotely a replacement for Advance Wars.

As for Advance Wars

I find the first to be the best, it's difficult while still fair, and for multiplayer has a very simplistic pick up and play feel for newcomers.

Advance Wars 2 is also excellent but I feel like it's less pick up and play, and it's missing some of the charm of the first game, like the little animations that play when you win or lose a fight.

Dual Strike is objectively the worst but also by far the most fun due to how completely broken it is, it also has so much fucking content I still haven't unlocked everything to this day. It doesn't offer a challenge but it has insane casual fun where you get the most broken supers ever. Also has the best soundtrack.

Days of Ruin I just hate. It almost completely lacks the series identity, and the pick up and play aspect has now completely vanished, traded away in favor of balance. This game is only for esports faggots who take the games way too seriously, just play a 4X game instead of this.

It's a shame the AI is still too dumb to correctly attempt anything but land attacks. Any map that has you separated by water, it just sends a slow trickle of of one or two helicopters are landers at time; it remind of the campaign missions in old Command & Conquer games.

Weapons grade autism.

What are the worst units? Sea planes? I used those all the time. On fog of war maps they're awesome for doing fly-bys of cities and forests to scout targets for battleships.

>pick up and play aspect has now completely vanished, traded away in favor of balance.

How does being wildly unbalanced make a game more approachable to newcomers?

Just naval units in general.

Days of Ruin's units are too balanced compared to each other to the point where every single move has to be thought it. In previous games you could just rush tanks and be an idiot and still have fun.

>new level
>have to attack heavily fortified enemy 5 squares away who keeps cranking out waves of units
>win after 7 hours of chipping away
>new level
>have to attack heavily fortified enemy 5 squares away who keeps cranking out waves of units
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

There isn't a single mission in the entire series that takes more than 20 turns for a competent player to beat (HC excluded). The vast majority can be done in 10 or less.

Because not everything is esports bullshit. You're playing against the computer. The units themselves don't need to be balanced as long as the maps are properly designed.

>7 hours of chipping away

I used to be like this too

it's okay for guys to take damage m8, rockets and artillery can only hit one target per turn

Seems strange to dismiss an entire category of units you don't have much choice over using. There are limits over how far air units can project on most maps. They and unescorted landers get chewed up easily by naval units over the sea.

Spamming neotanks is boring regardless of whether you're playing computer or not. So are CO powers that fully negate the actual tactical gameplay. Competent game design doesn't make something "esports" and the worst parts where DS in particular fails to balance its design have nothing to do with multiplayer.

I don't play multiplayer at all but I'd imagine it's also not fun for new players to have their defeat predetermined by not picking broken COs, so I still don't understand how that makes it approachable to beginners.

>looks like I downloaded a shitty rom with only that theme corrupted

>the comfy feeling of blasting shit with your rockets to this tune

Truly the best feeling

Am I the only person who absolutely hated the anti tank unit in DoR?

It always felt like an absurdly strong defensive option for moment when your base was getting assaulted. Not to mention that you usually need a pretty high cost unit to effectively take it out.

An AT with a tabitha in it is just pure madness.

It's dead Jim.

actually the only new unit I liked was the motorcycle

It was vulnerable to rockets, battleships and bombers. Also infantry if you're willing to accept losses.

But yeah, a little overpowered. The thing that annoyed me the most was that it was effective against helicopters, as if they weren't far enough down the food chain already.

You sure you weren't playing Days of Ruin, bud?

>tfw the closest to Advance Wars on the Vita its a shity History Channel game

youtube.com/watch?v=i3EBTZq2KPs

Did days of ruin have the same composer as the Fire Emblem tellius games? I always thought this sounded like it came out of it.

>It was vulnerable to rockets, battleships and bombers.

Which are all high cost units.

> The thing that annoyed me the most was that it was effective against helicopters

This for me was the thing that made me go from thinking that it's just a slightly powerful unit to saying it's stupidly powerful.

Oh, my sweet summer child.

The aesthetics just don't do it for me and I have no idea why.

Ok, two things in this post make you a total and utter retard:

1: Not always spending time thinking out every move several turns in advance in all strategy games

2: The fact that AW1 and AW2 are both unquestionably harder than DoR

I'm playing DS right now, it's my first advance wars game, I think it's WAY more balanced than any of the fire emblem games I've played.

I've thought this for the longest time myself. At the very least, it sounds very close to Radiant Dawn. Codename STEAM had the same composer as Days of Ruin too and it also had some very Radiant Dawn sounding pieces.

Forsythe was a good Camus, RIP

I want to capture her HQ if you catch my drift
( I mean i want o have the intercourse with her)

You must not be far into it because DS is famous for going full retard with the CO powers.

Antitank loses hard to any foot soldier, which you almost always have in abundance anyway. It's a fun tech that checks small vehicle/helicopter spam.

But you already did.

Mission 19? I dunno, I've only put in like 10 hours, so I don't have a full opinion on the full mechanics of the game.

>blocks your path

>unzips catamaran

It looks more like Ancient Empires 2, pretty great when it comes to older cellphone games.

>Pick Spammi and eaglol
>Tag CO
>"Balanced"

>freezes bank account

>8-range rockets you from behind a wall of infantry

No, you're just being retarded.

Fire Emblem is not a strategy game, it's a tactical game where none of your units can ever be allowed to die(unless you're a casual). Of fucking course this means the gameplay has to be heavily stacked in your favour or it would just be a frustrating endless mess of reloads and RNG(it already is that on the highest difficulties, but it would have been even worse).

Advance Wars puts you on relatively even ground with the enemy, you can build the same units as them for the same prices and they are equally powerful. In return you are allowed to make huge mistakes as long as you win in the end.

And that's where DS has a problem, it gives you a bunch of tools such as level-up abilities and double CO powers which can make you overwhelmingly more powerful than the opponents can handle. That's what breaks the balance.

Another big difference between FE and AW is that AW is supposed to also be balanced for multiplayer.

If I had to say anything, I wish CO powers weren't a thing. Sometimes they feel rather random, or I guess a better statement would be unpredictable. They haven't bothered me too much yet, but still.

>suddenly tanks out of fucking nowhere

>AW is supposed to also be balanced for multiplayer.
Not really. None of the eight games prior to DoR are much good for balanced multiplayer.

heh.... nothing personell.. kid..

Days of Ruin balances them out at the cost of making them kind of boring. Most of DoR's CO powers are just damage/defence buffs.

That's my main problem with DS; the game ends up being more about timing your CO skills than what's actually going on in the map. DoR neuters most of the CO powers and gives you passive area effect skills while the CO powers build to disincentivize actually using them when you can help it.

Dear lord, women in uniform get me so fucking hard

CO powers were perfect in AW2, DS was definitely overdoing it (the synergy thing was a fun idea, but you really shouldn't have gotten two turns for it)

Mednafen never.

We had a (shitty) mednafen game just two days ago. Now altwfc, on the other hand, is truly never ever.

I know, I had to leave in the middle of it.
