Carmack was literally never wrong.

>he plays videogames for the story

What kind of porn would he direct though?

Oh yeah? His shit games got BTFO by Icycalm. How about that?

who?

Nice try icycalm but no one gives a shit about what you have to say

Gay porn where a martial arts battle turns hot.

>he doesn't play games for the story

Why isn't Carmack in jail? does he still have that much money?

I just googled Icycalm and I still have no fucking idea what you're talking about.

>implying context and story in porn doesn't just make it hotter

that's why he said it's expected to be there in the quote

Carmack is the kid that used his toy cars to play destruction derby, but started shrieking and throwing shit at you when you asked if you could use them to race instead.

>"Carmack is a master programmer"
>Sup Forums literally cannot point out a single example of his elite programming

...

fast inverse square root
which I heard he stole

carmack has nothing to do with that. it was stolen by someone else from sgi

All these years and he's still right. Fuck nu/v/

>being this fucking new

he's the kid who broke into his school to steal computers.

he's right, making toy cars crash into each other is way more fun than gay races

I think people tend to misunderstand what he said. Story is a crucial part of a game, but the main point of vidya is to provide entertainment through gameplay. If gameplay is shit, plot will not be enough to salvage the game.

>

>Story is a crucial part of a game, but the main point of vidya is to provide entertainment through gameplay.
The RPG and adventure genres say hi.

A fraudster who's currently on the run from law.

RPGs has shit stories, compared to other games

Explain Andromeda.

>Fiddling with stats and finding solutions isn't gameplay

No, retard, you missed the point. The stories in those genres are intertwined with the gameplay. You can't say "the main point of vidya is gameplay, not story" for those genres because they can't be separated like that.

What needs to be explained?

cant look at carmack the same way anymore after the whole harddrive ordeal

Every story is connected with gameplay. Otherwise, the player has no motivation to progress.

Yes, but less so for certain genres. The more emphasis on the story the more it becomes part of the adventure genre.

Sure, but Andromeda (I'm ) got shat on in reviews for gameplay, and in lesser degree story.

>caring what an old hack code monkey thinks
Look at me I made a mediocre FPS in the early 90s, pay attention to me!

The main point of vidya *is* gameplay. If you take it away you've got a movie.

I actually agree with him. Pokemon games, for instance, have shit stories, but are fun as fuck. Does gameplay equal to design?

bumping for potential

JOHN "NEED TO GOOGLE WIPING A HARD DRIVE" CARMACK

pls no bully

What's the story with him and porn?

Didn't play it or read much on its reviews, but from what I saw it seemed like animations, models, writing and cinematic direction were the main concerns. When it's that bad, sure it will weigh everything down, doesn't mean those things are the MOST important about it.

He's really good at googling things.

>doesn't mean those things are the MOST important about it
But they are. They allow for a coherent experience, thus fulfilling their role of immersing the player. When you notice bloops, the game doesn't deliver.

>games are movies with gameplay
I see this viewpoint parroted often but it's fucking stupid. What movie do you get if you take gameplay away from Spacewar?

JOHN "CODE STEALING FLASHDRIVE SWIPING" CARMACK

Carmack is /ourguy/ who did nothing wrong
Story is for chumps and fags who can't get good at vidya.
Also Carmack was the best Taco delivery boy

Carmack is a godlike programmer, knows that story isn't important in games, BTFOs sjws, AND can beat your ass.

youtube.com/watch?v=X68Mm_kYRjc

How scared of this guy is nu-Sup Forums? Probably has a huge cock too.

Yeah exactly like normal people.

He'd rather work than see porn.

This is why he's successful and you aren't

If you're so hardcore, why don't you move on from your babby FPS shit?

>Romero's philosophy lead to the creation of Deus Ex
Carmack's philosophy lead to the creation of Rage

Speaks for itself, really.

If you take away the gameplay from Spacewar you obviously have nothing left. Unless you mean the graphics and music on screen that would be completely meaningless by lacking the interactivity of gameplay.

Also you have to learn not to strawman. I didn't say games are movies with gameplay. I said that gameplay is the essential element of games. Don't fucking put your retarded thoughts in my mouth.

The examples you gave were RPGs and Adventure.

Take away the gameplay from an adventure/point and click game and you have a movie. You've got your 5 act plot structure, dialogue, a mystery to explore that gets solved in the course of the story. Only that there's no player, there's no input from said player, and the game would basically resolve itself - hey, just like a movie only needs to be put on "play".

How would RPGs be different in that regard if you take the gameplay away? All the meaningful choices you make in building character and progressing through the story would be absent. Thus either there is no story at all or it would play itself like a movie.

Come on. This isn't that fucking hard.

What's Romero's philosophy?

>Romero's philosophy is rehashing literature
Carmack introduced a new way of enjoying a medium

I am successful.

At beating my meat like a butcher.

Carmack is a scumbag and is completely soulless but he's also a genius who has consistently been right about most things in the industry. He is the closest our species has ever come to true machinelike efficiency the likes of which regular men can never achieve.

Pokemon games are like the only popular RPGs without story. They're the exception that demonstrates the rule.

waste the publisher money in hooks and cocaine

Icycalm is a fag who can't play fighting games and is a casual """atmosphere""" tard.

>He is the closest our species has ever come to true machinelike efficiency
You should see me jack off.

They aren't though, because they could all be perfect, but if the story is shit then it's all for nothing. And we want those things to be perfect because we want to experience the story at its peak. We don't want the story to be amazing so we can experience great animations and cinematic direction, that makes absolutely no sense at all.

creating an engaging narrative that brings depth to a game that would othwise have none.

Is the smug face hereditary?

What ordeal?

>We don't want the story to be amazing so we can experience great animations and cinematic direction
Because one doesn't lead to the other. I am not belittling story's role in a game, but it's not what sells games. Call of Duty, for instance, is multiplayer-focused, and has been since the year dot.

However, talking story-wise, it may make a game a killer-app. Take Wolfenstein: the gameplay was superb at the time, but the fact that you could punch nazis also contributed towards its selling. However, never in the first place was Wolfenstein about the plot. The same goes even for The New Order.

>not caring about story in video games

Is this some sort of generational thing with Z? Sup Forums's demographic is underaged and the previous generation of developers were all about narrative and the question of whether or not video games could be art, going back to the praise that games like Planetscape and Metal Gear Solid received and before that to the popularity of Adventure games during the 90s. If this board grows up and develops games I could almost see a repeat of the NES era.

At the time, Carmack was correct in this statement.

But the execution of stories in games is far from perfect, and is often better handled by other mediums.

>laughing my ass off off
What did he mean by this?

Holy shit is icycalm sharing his opinion on videogames for FREE?

That usually costs 35€ /year

>Using Dark Souls as an example of good modern day narrative presentation

This better be bait or I'm gonna start lmaoing @ your life.
One of the aspects that most people like about the souls games is that it takes developmental inspiration from classic games that put the game's story in the background and gameplay in the forefront, because they're fucking games and not movies.

There are so many games out that that force "narrative" and hand-holding tutorials down your throat without ever letting you play the actual fucking game and souls does the exact opposite of that.

Is it weird that the fact he has 2 children is a great relief to me?

It would be a great shame for a genius like him to be a genetic dead end.

Wonder if he ever googled how to wipe seed from a woman

>In 1984 you could create and use thermite to aid in a robbery and only get 1 year in a young offenders institute
WTF.

>Wolfenstein 3D
>"punch" Nazis

Stephen King

I'm using Dark Souls as an example of what is basically a NES game with very little story since along with Skyrim it seems to be the biggest influence on Sup Forums's age group.

>because they're fucking games and not movies
Yeah. That seems to be a common opinion amongst Post-Millennials.

>It's a "Carmack speaks 5 hours straight without taking breath or drinking" episode

fatties ruin everything.

>ywn be John Carmack
Why even continously maintain vital functions?

holy fuck he's do alpha

>it's not what sells games
Sure it does. Halo 2 got critically panned for its story and that is a huge franchise. The Last of Us and Uncharted are extremely popular. Silent Hill and Deadly Premonition have their fanbases. Planescape: Torment and Deus Ex are lauded as masterpieces and their stories play a huge part in that.

>an overweight accomplice

Is he an android from the future?

Carmack wanted to get rid of strafejumping in Q3A.

In the other hand, we own him the weapon balance

Carmack is the kid who meticulously lined up his toy cars by order of total volume, then by color and stage of wear, and somehow always had more cars than he started with.

>Trent Reznor
>made Doom
>didn't even meet id until after Doom's release

>Robin Williams
>relevant at all
I hate this image and how people believe it so easily.

...

Punch a hole in them yeah

if a singleplayer game has a shitty story, I just get bored and basically forget I even played it. Only the retarded children discount story as the most unimportant part of the game. Unfortunately, game makers these days are stupid and can't write good stories to begin with, their major influences being hollywood summer movies and the cartoons they grew up with, so they make bland pale copies of the anime they grew up watching and shitty scifi stories that paley resemble young adult fiction like Ender's Game and think they did well, and low functioning gamers think it's good stuff.

I remember enjoying Mirror's Edge alot, but when I think back I can barely remember shit about the game because the story was basically dogshit. On the other side Bioshock was good, and was praised for its story and ideas, but even still it really has only about half as much depth as a good book has. Just shows how poor storytelling is in games.

what's it with nerdy people and lacking empathy?

Carmack stories? Carmack stories.

...

Empathy is for stupid people.

Quake barely has any story and is one of the best single player game to be made.

Sounds like a smart man

You mean Quake 3

Quake 4 is vastly underrated. The singleplayer is goat.
