What is the actual Citizen Kane of gaming? And by that, I don't mean the best game of all time but what game truly innovated and changed the medium with either technical or narrative achievement.

the thing about citizen kane is that it isn't at all impressive anymore, because every movie afterward used the techniques that it pioneered. so you watch it today and it just looks like any other movie, and you wonder what was so great about it

so
>What is the actual Citizen Kane of gaming?
is a really tough question

Goldeneye for FPS gameplay.

mario 64

MGS2, easily.

>the thing about citizen kane is that it isn't at all impressive anymore

Nah, it's still a very impressive and well-directed movie. Its themes are timeless and the cinematography is still incredible for a movie that came in the 1940s.

Regardless of all memes, it's still OoT because of its enormous influence on 3D gaming.

These.

In terms of everything which followed it being influenced by it? DOOM, probably.

>the cinematography is still incredible for a movie that came in the 1940s
the quality of cinematography is not defined by the era it was made in. plenty of films from the 30s and 40s are visual marvels. Citizen Kane pioneered certain technqiues, sure, but it was by no means the first, or the only film of its time, to look amazing.

This.

Super Mario 64. Every 3d adventure game before this was an incomplete experience. SM64 was the first game to be a true 3d adventure.

Halo invented FPS

Doom or Ocrarina of Time. Suck it.

it isn't though, because those cinematographic (?) techniques are everywhere now

you just expect them these days, so when you see them in citizen kane you don't realize that this is the movie that invented them

Super Mario Bros.

...

...

SMB
or maybe Pokemon

Never ever flickboi.

Donkey Kong for the Arcade.

Quake for FPS because it was one of the first to use 3D polygons for everything and be designed with vertical movement in mind.

There's only one game that could possibly fit this description. The ur-game, the game that epitomizes everything that has happened since. That game is the Legend of Zelda on the NES. No other game before or since was as universal or influential.

(Wizardry is a close second.)

...

Desperate.

unironically these. also mario for nes was revolutionary for it's time
