I don't hear much talk about Ys here. Is the series underrated? Are any of the steam games worth it?

Oath of Felgana and Origin are pretty good.
Play it in this order
I & II
VI
OiF
Origin
VII
Celceta
VIII
Thanks, I was wondering this too
Which ones should I get on Steam?
Did I & II aged poorly?
Would it be stupid to start with Origin? I thought that since it gives backstory to the events of I and II it could motivate me to play those later
I think Oath is the best introduction gameplay-wise
>Would it be stupid to start with Origin?
Yes.
Origins is fun I'm not really bothered I started with is, I wanna try I&II for the gameplay next.
Just start with Origin senpai
I wouldn't recommend playing 1 and 2
Beat them all. Waiting for VIII now.
Ruined it with the party shit
Solo Adol or gtfo
Don't listen to this guy, he's a homosexual. Play 1 and 2 at some point, bump combat is fun.
It's called Origin, you illiterate.
Stop giving bad "advice".
I guarantee you didn't start playing Ys until it hit Steam.
Its better to start with I & II for gameplay reasons. Origins is 3 different characters each with different playstyles - only the woman, Yunica, plays like Adol, and Adol is the main and generally only playable character in the rest of the series
There's really not a huge plot or any major underlying story behind the whole series. Only I and II are direct sequels and Origins talks about why the bad guy exists, which doesn't really matter because I and II has a stereotypical big bad evil guy trying to take over the world that you don't know or care about until he's shooting fireballs at your face while the floor collapses. The world is generic and Origins doesn't make it anything special. Ys and every entry really just boils down to beating huge, tough ass bosses while sweet drum beats and heavy guitar riffs play in the background. Its what everyone expects from every entry in the series, and the series is vaunted because it delivers every time
1 and 2 do feel very primitive yeah. 1 is grindy in the first half, and the bosses feel like they were made by complete amateurs. 2 is more consistent and high quality overall. One of the great things about the old school design is that they just start, though. No wordy intros, no handholding, you're just dropped into the world and explore on your own.
Not underrated, everyone fucking loves Ys, but it's pretty obscure in the west for sure.
Unless you really want to play them all for some reason ignore I & II, they're just not good enough.
>I guarantee you didn't start playing Ys until it hit Steam.
So?
>Ys 1
>grinding
Are you retarded? You max out your level about halfway through the game without any grinding. Fuck off.
*blocks your path*
That's why I added "first half" right after you blind bastard. It has both grinding for money and level grinding until you max out
>Celceta
incorrect
I'd recommend Celceta to nobody, and Dawn of Ys to everybody
Sure, Celceta was made to quell the argument of which version of Ys IV was canon, but it's worse in every way
Plus Ys is a series focused on really good gameplay with plot as an afterthought, and Dawn is by miles the best in that regard
You're more-or-less right otherwise though
Stupid bat idiot
I reallt can't believe people actually like bump combat but ok, everyone has their opinions.
I tried Celceta as my first and didn't like it much. The writing was bland and dry and I didn't care about anything that was happening no matter how much it was shoved in my face, and the combat was just okay. I'm pretty disappointed because this series has always seemed interesting.
What's the consensus on Celceta? Did I just pick a bad one? Should I try something else or is this not for me?
>It has both grinding for money and level grinding until you max out
That's entirely optional.
Yet another series that went to shit on handleds
Maybe they will pull off a MH World someday and I'll get interested again
>Game is about zelda action and tough bosses
>Pick the one with party managing and trying to be a rpg
Ofc you should try something else
Celceta is the worst Ys not counting V for obvious reasons.
For the most part yeah if you've already played the game before, but realistically speaking a new player's going to grind. Can't progress without the sword and shield either.
Good to know, gonna give the series one more shot.
Start with Origin or Oath in Felghana. Don't start with Ys 1&2 because the gameplay isnt good no matter how hard oldfags try to sell it. Good luck.
It's shit.
WAITING FOR VIII ON STEAM SO BAD
Steambabbies strike again
here user, let me make the wait worse for you
How many of you faggots would still be able to post with this captcha?
Seven is worse than Celceta.
Seven has an actual plot.
>I don't hear much talk about Ys here
watafak
>caring about plot
>Ys games
Celceta cut out a lot of the dumb bullshit Seven had and is overall a much tighter experience.
>hating Celceta
literally "I don't have Vita" butthurt. the game is amazing
>Ys is a series focused on really good gameplay
so Celceta?
Dawn of Ys is a bad game in every way
This.
t. non-Steambabby
It's the perfection of the bumper cart system. It's not bad at all.
>t. hasn't played Dawn of Ys
I don't see why you felt that was a necessary post to make
Celceta is okay, it just isn't as good as any other Ys
>tfw he gets even harder if you have a 144hz monitor
Had to lock the game to 60 to beat him.
>t. hasn't played Celceta
I'm playing right now Origins for the first time
I just finished Creeper's Chamber
Very enjoyable, more than 18 hours of fun
No need to play on nightmare. Just play as Hugo and Yunica Tovah and you'll have over 30 hours of good game and decent story
I wish this game had voice acting
It's not a contest user, I played Celceta after both Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys and was wholly unimpressed by the lazy way its plot, locations, music etc were handled, especially having had 20 years to make improvements
Its combat system isn't completely godawful, sure, but it's a little unrefined, and Ys VIII came along and fixed everything that was wrong with it
Even then I don't think even VIII is as good as Dawn, but that's mostly because of the 90s aesthetic that I personally love
does The Oath in Felghana windows version has full voice acting like PSP?
This desu senpai. I'm glad we're getting a Steam release of the game, since I don't own a PS4.
It doesn't, but strangely enough it will recognize the voice files from the PSP version if you insert them.
It's called Origin.
Should I play the PSP or steam version?
>I guarantee you didn't start playing Ys until it hit Steam.
Wrong. Played oath on psp first.
Wrong, I played 1 and 2 on the fucking Turbografx first.
Steam, definitely. The PSP version had some dumb choices that casualize the game and worse graphics.
Celceta is better than Mask of the Sun and V, plus maybe VI.
After playing the other ys games. Finished memories of celceta, this. So much fucking this.
Yeah, VI was a complete slog. I don't know what everyone sees in that one.
GoG > Steam
DRM Free > All
agreed
Adol is still the best protagonist, and I still compare him to Doomguy
>Both fast as fuck
>deadly up close
>men of few words
>frequently kills shit several times bigger than them
>can take on hoards with little effort
Origin is the best, Yunica a cute.
VI was great in the context of a game that followed Ys V. I enjoyed the fuck out of it when I first played it, warts and all.
It's just that Oath and Origin did absolutely everything it did better in every way so its flaws are way more pronounced.
VIII won't be on GOG though. NISA confirmed GOG refused the game because of the sexualized 11-year-old girl which supposedly "promoted pedophilia".
then gog should get rid of every western game
Western games don't sexualize lolis.
I find this hard to believe. Source, perhaps? Sounds like one of those stories when ESRB supposedly forced to remove this and that, and later on it turns out ESRB already got censored version.
Dude, didn't you hear about Monster Monpiece being banned from GOG for the same reason?
are VII and Celceta not on steam?
I love these games but I dont like the direction they are taking with their new games, seven and celceta are crap.
nah, you can still play them on pc though
>nah, you can still play them on pc though
There is a chink port of VII or do you mean the psp version?
>You max out your level about halfway through the game
More like within the final tower.
He's easy to beat if you switch back to the Silver Sword.
There are some people who managed to kill him without it tough.

Erm, no, not in a world where Ys V exists, and Mask of the Sun really isn't as fun or interesting (if only just to get mad at) as Celceta. I actually would like to replay Celceta someday because I liked some of the bosses and dungeons, even if the others are mediocre or bad. Kefin's a breeze, but a shallow and clearly rushed one, and I can't wait for the proper remake of Ys V.
Celceta at least refined combat after Seven introduced the new system, and it's got a faster action-packed intro. Too bad Seven has much better dungeons, bosses, and presentation.
VI has a good story, great worldbuilding, and excellent NPCs. I really love its soundtrack, the dungeon designs, and fighting many regular enemies with Livart and Brillante. But the bosses are mostly disappointing junk, and pacing can be a little wonky, not that infiltrating the Romn ship helps. Ark's faster to play through than Celceta, but the combat and pace in Celceta's better; I'd still take Ark instead, but Seven beats out both.
Meanwhile, Celceta has very few of the highs I experienced in Seven, which override the few major problems in that game which are quick to speed past. There's nothing as cool as Edona/Water Sanctum in Celceta except at Tower of Providence.
Also, this Dawn of Ys hate is dumb. For all the flaws that game has, it's still well-paced with great boss designs, generally good dungeons
So what? I've not heard any reasons why this Ys game, of all the ones in English so far, isn't coming to GOG (and maybe Humble Store?) despite Falcom's DRM-free policy. All we know so far is that NISA's not doing it, and I haven't read sources for this "reason".
You might like VIII better, but I also don't know what you dislike about the latest games. Just know that VIII's more challenging than Seven, brings back platforming, and has a solo-style character with quite a few dungeons/bosses in the PS4/PC version.
GOG is an anti-loli shit store, here's your reason, faggot. GOG IS SHIT. SHIT.
>I guarantee you didn't start playing Ys until it hit Steam.
get a load of this faggot
oh christ, Ys 3 is the Zelda 2 of the series
they fucked up
DELETE THIS! FUCK LOLI! GOG IS LOVE GOG IS LIFE!
>FUCK LOLI!
who wouldn't?
I want to fuck Ricotta.
I too would like to pleasure her with my own fish if you know what I mean
This looks really good for a Vita game
Sorry user, I don't understand. You will need to be more precise...
Oh yeah, loli or not Ys VIII is absolutely beautiful
Though one of its major aspects is literally being about exploring nature, so it had better be
I would like for her to fish me out of the water, after which I would proceed to cuddle with her and flop around until she smiles
And then be eaten by her I guess
I like how her skirt is so short you can see her panties.
>a fine view
Surprisingly enough, it's harder to get the camera angled that way than you might think
the psp version
