It actually makes perfect sense. Due to the inflation of budgets for big games no publisher or big game studio wants to take a chance with a high profile game due to the possibility of losing astronomical amounts of money so it's better to just make samey games times infinity.

The good: They have an engine, and in-game assets BEFORE the crowd sourcing. Many of these campaigns just have concept art, and it means that they run into major problems AFTER the campaign has started. There's problems with the engine they've chosen, things aren't working out, etc. Then it's too fucking late or they have to delay. That shit should be worked out beforehand to avoid issues.
