It seems like emulation might become a reality in a year and a half or so, if you care.
Biggest differences between it and DaS are that it's a central hub that acts as a level selection and that you have to farm your healing items.
Jason Gomez
Demons player attack animations are faster than dark 1 but it's movement is clunky and rolling feels floaty. It has great atmosphere but you'll like it if you prefer the sense of discovery and exploration i.e. Dark 1. It's feel is kind of sad, the inevitable end of the world and such >Dark as Nordic mythology inspired wat I'd also recommend leaving this thread because the foaming at the mouth retards on Sup Forums are going to hyperbolically shit up this thread
Jaxon Turner
If the controls weren't so shitty in the first and second then the games would be a breeze.
Aaron Barnes
Individually, level design is tighter as a result of the non-interconnected world. Each world in DeS is unique with its own fantastic atmosphere, but that atmosphere is a different feeling from the special kind of loneliness inflicted by DaS's sprawling and confusing world. I think both are great, and while DaS' atmosphere may be more consistent, it never reaches the heights of something like the Tower of Latria.
There is even more weird, quirky mechanics than DaS, so that's a huge plus for me. Bosses are more varied, but most tend to veer towards gimmick fights. Doesn't mean they are bad, just definitely a step away from the more direct combat oriented style of the DaS series.
If BB was enough for you to get a ps4, DeS should be more than enough for a ps3.

Not OP but what don't you get about this? It clearly steals a bunch of shit from norse mythology like just about every other fantasy setting.
Adrian Rodriguez
>It clearly steals a bunch of shit from norse mythology like just about every other fantasy setting like fucking what
Levi Murphy
>Is this worth getting a ps3 for? Just DeS alone? No. It's got some pretty great atmosphere in a few places like the second area of Latria or the lead up to the Penetrator, and the combat feels pretty fluid when you chain R1's and R2's together, but it's overall a much more tedious experience, especially if you've played later games first. It's hard to appreciate the game when you've been spoiled by not having to worry about item burden or managing your world tendency. Plus, the grand majority of bosses are more like cinematic set pieces rather than actual fun fights. Honestly, while it's not a bad game, it's one of the most ludicrously overrated games that Sup Forums always praises.
Wyatt Hall
It feels clunky to me and I don't throw the word around often, so I agree with that sentiment. Rolling is kind of awkward and so is running
Gabriel Wood
DeS feels a little more "video gamey" because of the 'World-Level' format and boss-at-the-end-of-the-stage structure. It's almost like a mega man game.
Part of what was so appealing was the replayability and sense of trial and error. If you've already played DaS, you've already experienced a lot of those joys
Christopher Martin
Honestly, it's my favorite game of the generation which I put in hundreds of hours leveling characters and pvp. The online's free and there are a few people still playing. If you can think of any other games you actually want for the system then I would say yes definitely do it, but if its all for one game I'd just wait for emulation.
Kevin Richardson
Doesn't help the fact that 1-2 have the worst fucking controls, ever. for those two games I had to spend an hour rebinding. I know that 3 is the "Normie Version" of souls but at least they properly fix the controls to work better overall.
Nathaniel Morris

Name one thing that makes this stand out as a nordic fantasy game

Ludicrously overrated isn't fair - DaS did a lot of things better, but DeS did the majority of them very well and did them first. People are going to have fond memories of their first souls game, regardless of which one it is.
Angel Bennett
>instead of saying why they're bad I'll just repeat myself okay retard
Jaxson Rodriguez

Austin Harris
Yes, it is worth picking up a PS3 for. It's that good.
There's really not a whole lot of differences in the games. Demon's is less refined mechanically, but better in terms of level and boss design. It's a somewhat less polished(no jumping attacks, plunging attacks, jump, armor basically doesn't matter), but more interesting game that stills stands up to Dark Souls 1 as being a contender for being the best of the bunch.
The overall atmosphere is pretty unique, hard to describe. Less of a mythological(although I wouldn't say Dark Souls is super norse) vibe for sure though. The whole world is being enveloped in a "deep, colorless fog" and that's really a fitting description to vantage point of the world you are given, if that makes any sense. Things seem faded and hazy, but not in the "ruined" way they are in Dark Souls.
The feel is very sad though, one of the bosses later in the game probably has the saddest moment in the series.
Jaxon Evans
I'm aware, and I acknowledged that a player who's familiar with later games might have a difficult time appreciating DeS if they've played the other games first. That's certainly my bias, since I played DaS first and I didn't care for DeS as much thanks to that. Still had fun, but it's the Souls game I have the least amount of hours in.
Gavin Reyes
Im not saying that these games are fucking shitty, cause they're not. But the controls are just terrible. especially 2, 2 is clunky as fuck.
Adam Hernandez
DaS is much more complex, in the RPG mechanics department

I played Dark first and I'm pretty sure I like Demon's better. It really is a matter of taste which one you think is better, but my thoughts is that Demon's, while extremely fucking arcane in places, is at least a finished game. Dark kinda shits the bed in the second act.
Levi Morales
Gwynn is an Odin-like figure as well to some extent.
You can read into this shit a bunch of different ways so it's all bullshit, but Dark Souls is clearly influenced by various mythologies. Wouldn't say Norse explicitly, but yeah, there's some of that in there.
Liam Garcia

You're right, Based /ourguy/ Miyazaki-san came up with this totally unique idea on his own.

DeS would be playable on emulator if it didn't freeze so damn much. Also, the sound is buggy still. Maybe hold off on buying a PS3 if you have a decent PC to emulate it.
Isaiah Walker

computers dont come with keyboards either you fucking moron you buy a good one separately
Dylan James
You aren't supposed to play on a keyboard. Those controls exist because, as you correctly pointed out, you have to. That doesn't mean the game was designed to be played on KBM though. Souls games and From titles are console first through and through, that's what they have in mind when they're building the games. PC is an afterthought to make easy money in the west.
...and this is coming from someone who has spent the majority of their hours on PC whenever the option to play the games there is available.

Cameron Jenkins
I mean, you do have to manage it if you want to see everything. You should not worry about that for a first playthrough though, you guide that shit later. It's relatively easy to do provided you're playing offline as well.
Josiah Powell
No, No the only reason you continue is because I keep saying your game has super shitty ass controls so therefore for some reason you take offense to that? If you're not using a keyboard, then why do you actually care?

There's no source. It's not even a substantiated rumor. I wish it was a thing, but there's been nothing about it besides people asking for it.
Hudson Allen
A controller offers 360 degree movement seperate from camera control. A keyboard is essentially using a Dpad for movement.
You cannot argue that a controller and keyboard should be 1:1 in dark souls. They just dont work that way.
Caleb Foster
Figures. Just got excited, but apparently FromSoft is allergic to money
Robert White
You cant play it wrong, the keyboard and mouse are optional, including a controller. Do you not understand? Sorry that your favorite franchise has garbage controls many PCfags like myself prefer a keyboard and mouse that is why we have our own computers. Infact im sorry that I even offended you, I'll walk myself out of this thread.
Jeremiah Baker
They would need Sony to be on board. They own the IP. If it happens, I doubt From is even involved.
Ryder Long
I played DaS first some time ago and started my first playthrough of DeS this month. It's worth to get it, I still managed to be summoned by random players and invaded, had overall better experience, as other anons said it's just finished experience, with clear areas-finishing-with-bosses design. PS3 games are cheap right now, as well as PS3, so buying it isn't really an issue.
Henry Anderson
get it bro !
Caleb Price
>Forgot to add the pic
Henry Flores
Fantastic. Demon's Souls threads are a rarity these days and we don't need some idiot trying to play a game clearly made for controller bitching about how it doesn't work well with keyboard and mouse. It's seriously like going into a CS:Go thread and bitching about how the controls suck with controller.
DeS draws a lot of its inspiration from the Fighting Fantasy series. (pic related) It is haunting and oppressive, and makes fairly linear levels seem grand and overwhelming. Thematically it's unmatched by anything From has ever done.
Ryder Baker
Oh for christ sake, Im not saying its shitty with the controller, Im saying that the keyboard and mouse port is super shitty, and there should be no reason why I play with a controller.
Jonathan Flores
If you think Demon's Souls is bad then your opinion is wrong and you don't know SHIT about video games.
Luis Morris
1. Get a Slim NOR PS3 for around $80 2. Get a NOR flasher for 50 bucks 3. Do that shit right, and reapply thermal paste 4. Congrats, you now have most exclusives and console multiplats worth a fuck in the 7th gen. Just use Dolphin for Wii/GC games and you're all set. Or also have a hacked Wii, like I do.
John Howard
I nearly forgot you could rank players in Demon's Souls. That was a big mistake.
Easton Hall
Start playing Demon's Souls.

How can you shill an 8 years old game without any way to earn money and somehow connect that game to a triggered SJW feminist?
Nathan Perry
He is kinda right though. I liked Dark Souls III a lot(a lot more than many people seemed to have, even), but the series has devolved into pressing roll at the right time as opposed to finding "creative" solutions(most of them really weren't, but it made you feel like they were) within the game mechanics to overcome challenges. Demon's Souls is far and away features the most interesting game design. Dark Souls 1 equals it in a lot of ways with it's world design, but Demon's Souls did things in ways that are still really different and fresh.
Christopher Carter
Dude, the controls are the same as literally every other game in the franchise. What the fuck are you talking about?
Jace Walker
DeS isn't going to be remastered because while they own the IP, Sony aren't in complete control of the publishing rights thanks to that thing with Yoshida. A remaster would require them to go back into negotiations with Bamco and Atlus, which is somethign Sony likely see as being more hassle than it's worth.
Alexander Morales
I think your nostalgia goggles are on a little tight there, buddy. People fucking HATED puzzle bosses in Demon's Souls, so there are more straight up fights in other games. Rolling has always been the primary way of avoiding damage.
Aaron Cruz
>People hated the puzzle bosses
This is true, but looking back on it they weren't such a bad idea. There's only so many times I can do the Artorias fight with the relatively simple combat mechanics the Souls series has and enjoy it, and I've well since reached my limit there. Gael was among the better "fight" bosses in the series and the huge spectacle of the fight was interesting, but fundamentally it's something I've done a million times at this point.
....whereas something like Tower Knight really sticks out. I think that's the best blend of "puzzle" and mechanics they've done in the series, even. There's even the challenge of contending with the arena itself at first, something that none of the other games have really played around with, besides maybe a few fights in Dark Souls 2 that toyed with elements of it, but added a lot to certain fights.
I want more fights like Old Hero, whereas it's totally possible to rush in the first few times and get your shit pushed in if you don't stop to observe him and realize he has a weakness to exploit.
>Rolling has always been the primary way of avoiding damage.
Well, yeah. The boss fights in Demon's Souls generally had more going on than "press circle at the right time" though. Again, those fights are totally fine and they're probably what I want more of, but part of the reason the games got stale is because the combat is actually fairly shallow and relying too much on it exposes that.
Jack Rodriguez
...plus I'm pretty sure everyone liked Storm King, still one of the more unique fights in the series, despite Yhorm doing a similar thing in an inferior way.
Jason Brooks
The only truly bad bosses are leechmonger, dirty colossus, and dragon god.
Gavin Murphy
I would argue Dragon God is an example of interesting design and poor execution, even. Conceptually, there's nothing wrong with it, they just did a bad job with the encounter.
Xavier Bennett
>This is true, but looking back on it they weren't such a bad idea. Not at all, I actually enjoyed them. I'm a bit sad we got less puzzle bosses now, but on the upside the only boss I didn't enjoy in base game Dark Souls 3 was Aldrich because of his unpredictable instant kill arrow rain. Other than that, I looked forward to every single boss. I've also never gotten tired switching between blocking and dodging (although after Bloodborne I wish all rolling was switched with dashing/sidestepping, it just feels so much more fluid and sensible). To me, it sounds like you're tired of the formula itself. Souls games don't need to shake it up with new gimmicky gameplay things. >I want more fights like Old Hero The problem there is the loud, obnoxious complainers that will see he has an exploit and endlessly shitpost about it saying it's the easiest boss, claim FROM has lost it's way by giving the boss a weakness and call the game too easy, etc. There's no pleasing everyone.
Daniel Perez
So, it's bad. I do like the concept though. I would have loved having to run around a bigger arena trying to find not so obvious ways to damage the boss while avoiding sight. Sounds really cool but in the end it's just a bad boss.
Joseph Myers
Alone? No
With the host of other Ps3 exclusives? absolutely
Josiah Price
Pretty much this. No platform is worth getting just for one game.
Matthew Powell
I'd agree with you guys a couple years ago but ps3s are so cheap now I'd buy one for a single game. I'm buying a 360 just for lost odyssey because why not?
Evan Lee
May as well try Vesperia on the 360 while you're at it.
Jackson Flores

Anthony Long
>To me, it sounds like you're tired of the formula itself. Souls games don't need to shake it up with new gimmicky gameplay things.
Tired of it? No, but I just don't want them to lean on the action mechanics as much as they have in the later games. Again, the best fights in the series have been action orientated, but Demon's Souls was a richer game for having more going on than strictly that. Having a fight with a mechanic other than "use your i-frames at the correct moment and swing the appropriate amount of times without overcommitting" doesn't have to be strictly a cheap gimmick and if they had put the amount of effort into refining those types of fights as they did the Artorias type encounter, we probably could have had games that were dramatically better than what we got with Dark 2 and 3.
>The problem there is the loud, obnoxious complainers that will see he has an exploit and endlessly shitpost about it saying it's the easiest boss, claim FROM has lost it's way by giving the boss a weakness and call the game too easy, etc. There's no pleasing everyone.
This is probably the issue though. The dirty secret about these games is that they aren't actually super difficult once you learn the mechanics. Back when Demon's Souls came out, we were all shit and died to dumb crap way more often than we should have. That lead to the "muh difficult" meme that Bamco marketed and built some of the toxic culture the community has presently. The "I'm hardcore because I play Dark Souls" people would certainly be pissed about a fight like Old Hero.
...but I think you hit the nail on the head, you can't please everybody. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls had no interest in that. I'm not sure I can say the same about the subsequent titles.
Noah Myers
New Londo could have had a little bit more content and room to explore. Seems like they could have fit more in on the left side of the area, approaching from firelink. Other than that dukes is excellent, the DLC is amazing, totg and new Londo get a pass. The 2nd half of the game is unfinished meme is so unfounded and just seems to be parroted by people who either haven't played it or need to justify why it isn't their favourite
Charles Wilson
No idea why people never credit Dukes. One of the best areas in the game for me. I think it's a valid critique pre-DLC, but with it we have three stellar zones in the second half of the game.
Austin Green
>tired of the formula itself My problem is they didn't stick to the formula. I wanted DeS but bigger and better. DaS kind of achieved it. DaS 2 was a clusterfuck that tried. DaS 3 halts all progression and becomes Souls Greatest Hits.
Colton Clark
> DaS 3 halts all progression and becomes Souls Greatest Hits. It did lack inspiration for new areas. I wanted something akin to the Crystal Caves again, or discovering Ash Lake.
