What is the Dragon Ball / Star Wars / Lord of the Rings of video games?
a video game franchise that is:
>influential
>popular
>fantasy/sci-fi
>rich and original universe
i nominate two: The Legend of Zelda and The Elder Scrolls.

Shin Megami Tensei (mainline, but I guess Persona as a part of the whole multiverse)
Elder Scrolls, obviously.Probably our generation's Super Mario.
Based on those conditions it has to be Final Fantasy or Elder Scrolls.
Half life really raised the bar with both games in one way or another, but its world building still boils down to "oh no aliens" so take it with a grain of salt
>smt
>influential
OP here, it doesn't have to be fantasy/sci-fi as long as it's not a GTA clone with gangsters and shit.
warcraft
Ace Attorney
>but fantasy/sci-fi
It's arbitrarily set 10-20 years in the future for some reason
This was the true OTP
Assassins Creed probably
>Using a machine to relive moments from your ancestors
>Popular enough to spawn a shir load of sequels and now a film
>A shadow war between two factions that have been going on for centuries
>Other games have started copying ubishits open world aspects like the towers
man videogames suck.
Ultima.
Final Fantasy
TES
Video games are still very young so they don't have any very close equivalents.
Maybe Halo?
for what its worth it influenced pokemon and most monster catching games like it
Why wouldn't it be?
>influenced pokemon and most monster catching games
That's Dragon Quest.
The elder scrolls universe is much larger than the majority of people think it is, the games only reference or barely touch upon the grand concepts the fiction holds.
Fantasy AND sci fi? Xenoblade Chronicles
the first megami tensei is 1992. At that point DQ didn't do monster taming yet, I don't think.
It's a niche game. Mario/Zelda/FF are much more influential.
Influential?
I enjoy the games but the first Xenoblade's only influenced game is Xenoblade 2.
Both chrono games, especially Cross, have a fantastic world
>has ghosts
>has robots and weird tech
I guess it counts?
I know and this is why i pray that Bethesda fleshes it out and expand on it in TES VI, it's always hidden in books and lore scrapments that most people don't pay attention to how intriguing it is.
Well, sure, but I didn't want to go for the obvious targets.
ar tonelico is so autistic about it that it has its own made up language
Myst also has a language
The thing about any future TES game is that the timeline is edging very close to the 5th era, where supposedly Landfall happens, if you believe the C0DA is "canon", and considering it was referenced in ESO who knows anymore.
Either way I'm cautiously hopeful for them to not go the way of Fo4.
Just dropping in this thread to say that OG Dragonball is leagues above DBZ.
I'll take lighthearted antics with some peppered in intense story arcs over new baddie of the month any time.
First SMT game was released in October 1992. DQV was released in September 1992.
before SMT there was MT
there's nothing rich about zelda and there's nothing original about the elder scrolls. TES lore is just generic fantasy put into a blender
And it was released in october, your point?
The first Deus Ex.
>Orcarina nigguh
>All the zelda memes
>All that zelda merch and fan content
>Set in some fairly elf land shit
>World is populated with elves, rock people, and fish people
>We going back in time with every new game or exploring alternate timelines
>Your speaking out of your ass nigguh
The first Megami Tensei was released in 87 followed by another one in 1990, the [Shin] Megami Tensei started.
Gothic
>TES Lore
>Generic Fantasy
You poor deluded fool
Mortal Kombat
My bad. I was too focused looking for '92 megami tensei as per your initial post. But to be fair, they both didn't have monster raising part of pokemon and digimon genre since demon didn't level up back then.
landfall won't happen in 6 even tho i'd fucking love that
besides c0da is more about not caring what is and isn't canon
>TES
>Fantasy
>Not post-apocalyptic
wew lad
WEW LAD
equipped with shitty prequels/spin offs too
who cares about that shit just tell me the artist of that picture
literally 3 clicks
get fucked peasant you work for me
two with Sup Forums-x
Do you not know about the arrow next to reply?
>buys into the most unoriginal and lazily slapped-on theory of any fantasy game ever
>followed by memes for good measure
DID YOU KNOW THAT ALADDIN IS ACTUALLY SET IN A POST-APOCALYPTIC UNIVERSE?
and I suppose the post number, was looking while not in thread because of this fine user
Dark Souls
it's not theory my dude just explained in the ingame books no one ever reads
This
>Star Wars
>Action heavy soft sci fi series that has been watched/played by a HUGE number of people, with a large EU that fleshed out the galaxy, this EU is the domain of the hardcore fans.
Halo, hands down.
> LotR
> High fantasy, beloved by many people. Newer parts of the series are WAAY more popular, but are panned by hardcore fans, who still love the older iterations. Has A vast, detailed world with its own mythology and history, yet digging through this history can be dry and intimidating.
Absolutely The Elder Scrolls
Not sure what Dragon Ball would be
How did goku grow so fast even though they were about the same age if I remember correctly.
Or why is goku so small
At the start of DB Bulma is 16 and Goku is like 12
Probably because saiyan, keep in mind he eats a buttload of food
There's 4 years between them. Goku just has a major growth spurt when he's training with Kami.
Yea m8 the devs are simply doing a ruse on us all, all the authors in the game are into a big-ass conspiracy to pretend it. All the ancient robots by a now dead civilization that was technologically superior to any other civilization are in fact put there during the time the games takes place and produced at a hidden location. Obviously.
/ss/ factor, it always is.
Oh frig
Dragon Ball is more or less the modern fantasy (in setting) equivalent of Star Wars/LOTR at this point. Any video games that take place in the modern day but have a good amount of lore or world building?
I guess Metal Gear since it's got the world building and lore. It's influential and has many spin-offs and sequels. It's mostly modern with futuristic elements like Dragon Ball, and it's over the top just like Dragon Ball.
Dragon Ball would have to be Zelda, like OP said.
>A light and fun series that has been successful for decades. Took itself more seriously as time went on. Japanese import that is popular to the point that many normies know about and like it. Does what is known for well and sticks to that, to the point of being repetitive. Completely and unapologetically disregards certain aspects of the world.
Everyone knows the only thing Goku loves is fighting
It's fine as a cute friendship too.
>bulma
muh dikk
Post Bulma.
(YOU)
nigger what do you want? Go read a book if you want a good story, literally nothing comes close to books. >>/lit/
Legend of Zelda has anything but a rich and original universe.
>tfw the ending theme of DB
That music evokes the perfect emotion of childhood nostalgia.
By vidya standards its pretty fucking good.
One Piece has better world building than Dragon Ball
>Bulma used to be so cute.
what went wrong?
Mass effect was that for sci-fi.
Why the sweating, Shredder? It's an undeniable fact. OP manga surpassed Dragon Ball years ago. It's just a shame OP anime is so halfassedly done.
Todd pls
She married.
Same with Chichi and Videl, every girl that married turned to shit. Well, except 18.
They really dropped the ball with this one. It could have been a huge thing.
Even if the story is mostly self containrd each gen, its arguably Pokemon despite the shit storytelling.
-Each region has a decent amount of lore with or without the legendaries.
-Basically confirmed to have 2 parallel universes with a nether zone that contains a shit load of eldritch horrors that function as the series' famous creatures on steroids.
-A good chunk of characters that have some great motives, character development and backstory.
Its apparent that this is the case because its one of the most clamored for series' to have a cohesive overall lore that connects everything, and if they go down that route it could be something amazing, as it should also incorporate a decent amount of meta with the two parallel universes basicslly being two different eras and design principles having a story purpose.
This actually meets all those criteria better than any other game posted ITT.
...
The Elder Scrolls and Assasin's Creed to be honest with you there is just so much lore.
i really want to fuck bulma thicc ass
But mario has the deepest lore.
I bet Bulma sucked Goku's dick when he was asleep.
