-No DVD player
-No big 1st party titles day 1 (Mario & Zelda)

Because PS2.

It wasn't a DVD player, it's one of the reasons why the PS2 sold so much

Because the Capcom Five fucked up, especially RE4 going to PS2 within the GameCube's lifetime. Xbox was the stronger hardware and had Murica backing it, and the PS2 had the biggest library by far and was the cheapest. With that in mind, GameCube had only exclusives left and look how that turned out.

PS2 and XBOX are more easy to pirate (dvd, + hd).

no dvd player
first party games took risks (Prime, Sunshine, Wind Waker) that split their fanbases
missing key third party devs like Rockstar and Squareenix (LOL ENJOY YOUR CRYSTAL CHRONICLES WHILE PS2 GETS FFX)
on that note PS2 had WAY MORE third party exclusives

>especially RE4 going to PS2 within the GameCube's lifetime

and people wonder why Switchfags and Nintyboyos are assflustered that XX isn't get localized in favor of the blue ocean meme theory.

>BUT GENERATIONS SOLD LIKE SHIT

300k is shit now? oh right Capcom I forgot. The same company that will cancel franchises based on whether it sells as good as Street Fighter or not.

...

Few third-party exclusives. Although there were some good first-party games, most third-party games were multiplats, some of which were half-assed ports ridden with glitches. Gauntlet: Dark Legacy on GC was an abomination. Merely picking up a hint scroll caused the game to freeze.

The GC had trouble attracting developers because of its restrictive media format. It was difficult to fit FMVs onto a 1.4 GB disc, so a lot of games just used in-game cutscene rendering instead. Also, Nintendo's reputation as a censory-happy, "family-friendly" company had not yet subsided. Developers were admittedly concerned about Nintendo's regressive licensing and localization policies fucking up their creative works. Their concerns might not have been entirely justified, since the GC did see games like Resident Evil and Sanity's Requiem. Still, releasing an M-rated title on a Nintendo console is sales suicide. Parents just won't buy that shit for their kids.

>consumers wanted the GC to have DVD playback
This is just Nintendo's half-assed excuse to cover up their shit licensing and localization policies driving away third-party developers.

probably because your fucking games were limited to 1.2GB and if you wanted to do multiple disc release like RE4 then you had to pay Nintendo a high licensing fee.

>tfw owned both this and ps2
My late childhood was pretty good

I kind of miss how X box 1 had a great launch...
>Sweet hardware
>Plays muh CDs
>Plays muh DVDs
>Halo
>Broadband
Only shit thing was the duke controler.

Because the PS2 was a really, really cheap DVD player that was also a console.

Gamecubes controller always put me off getting one. Looks like a babys rattle.
>le shitty controller generation.

>It was difficult to fit FMVs onto a 1.4 GB disc,
Maybe they should have made their games with more gameplay instead.

Gamecube was the last Nintendo home console that I loved. It went into gimmick hell afterwards and never recovered.

Another thing was the weird controller that nearly no one was willing to accept at face value.

>people shitting on a pretty solid controller.

It wasn't perfect but god damn was it good

Because apparently a good library isn't enough to go off of.

Having one tiny bumper instead of two like the PS2 or even the black and white buttons on the Xbox probably limited 3rd party interest.

I feel like the GC had more truly great titles than anything Nintendo has made since

Because of the PS2 selling well due to the DVD player. It got critical mass and the Gamecube could never really compete as a result due to all of the exclusives flocking Sony's way.

It didn't have a DVD player and looked like a Fischer Price toy so older players were turned off.

The PS2 sold like crack in a poorhouse and had the might of every Japanese developer backing it while the Xbox had the best multiplats and got some PC developers on board.

That was comfy as all hell to actually play with though.

>poorhouse
Exactly the PS2's audience, correct.

damn that really is impressive when you see it laid out like that

>Appliance sells more than hobbyist technology
Real shocker.

there is a large portion of the market who have no interest in those nintendo exclusives and just want a box to play cod, gta, sports, and racin games on
and the Wii U was not that box

it had the 2 worst mainline zelda and mario games
theres no way a nintendo console could survive that

what do you mean? the gamecube didn't get skyward sword or breath of the wild

>it had the 2 worst mainline zelda and mario games

>It didn't have Skyward Sword, Link between Worlds, or Mario Galaxy 2

What did he mean by this?

It lost the multiplat and "media center" competitions

All it had was games

Man those fucking install bases on the GC shit all over the PS2's

Who needs a good zelda game if you have Eternal Darkness?
Who needs a good mario game if you have Ty the tasmanian tiger?

Ok, so why didn't xbox sell 150 million?

>cheap DVD player

data360.org/dsg.aspx?Data_Set_Group_Id=497

Ok so why didn't xbox sell as many? It had DVD.

The PlayStation name is golden in Europe and Japan want nothing to do with foreign products that aren't iPhones.

>tfw you were one of those 22 million

>PLEASE BUY THE NINTENDO GAMECUBE! NOW ONLY £80 A YEAR AFTER RELEASE!

I had a gamecube too user, but don't talk shit. Having Billy Hatcher instead of GTA III hardly made us the elite.

because the truly must play games on it were multiplayer so as long as one guy had one in a group of friends you'd be good to go

>ignores how xbox, also a DVD player only sold GameCube numbers as well

Wasn't the crux of it's marketing. I knew the PS2 played DvD's back in the day, I had no idea the Xbox classic did until years later.

>*games that no one wanted to buy

I feel you though. I had a gamecube, because Capcom refused to place Resident Evil REmake and Zero on PS2 like they should have done.

Wot? Why because "muh mareeoh"?

>newcomer
>fucking garbage controller
EZ

Thats a washy excuse user.

It literally was never highlighted in Xbox classic marketing and was everywhere for the PS2.
Reality isn't washy because it doesn't support your opinion faggot.

QUESTION TO ALL YOU SALTY MOTHERFUCKERS OUT THERE:

I see a lot of shit talked about how PS2 "only" won because it had "a DVD player" but let me ask you, and please answer truthfully... Do you belive, that if Gamecube had a DVD player built in, and released as CHEAP as it did, would it have sold 150 million units and won the gen by a country mile? Well??

>tfw was the PC + GC kid
>tfw Metroid, Half-Life 2, Halo, GTA 3-VC-SA, Morrowind, etc
literally best combo of the 6th gen

>newcomer
>what was the orginal PlayStation

Nice excuse.

You want to source on that kid? Because we ALL knew the Xbox had a DVD player. We also all knew about Halo.

didn't xbox hueg need you to buy a separate dvd playback kit to be able to play dvds?

recall it didn't even let you out of the box

A system that didn't sell as well as the Playstation 2? A system that was not a newcomer, had a decent controller, and could play dvds.

and yeah, just looked it up

some kinda remote

couldn't play dvds without that, so pretty shit

What? What are you talking about? You claim Xbox could not do as well because it was a newcomer, I am saying the orginal PlayStation was a newcomer during the N64/PSX/Saturn gen. And whats this shit about it being able to play DVD's? PSX couldn't play DVD's

Why would Microsoft do that to themselves?

Follow the fucking conversation before jumping in with your shitty goddamn opinions you fetus.

they love selling add-ons

they did plenty of that shit with 360 too, between external proprietary hard drives and.. the hd-dvd player

hd-dvd failed but at the time who really knew, it could've been better for games too given the competitor had like 6x the storage space on a single disc

my guess is that they tried to jew people into buying a remote and it hugely backfired, which is actually pretty funny

>question posed: why didn't xbox dominate the gen?
>suggested answer: newcomer
>but PSX was a newcomer of its gen and rekt the competition so that cant be enough can it?
>reply: hurr durr the PSX was not a newcomer and could play DVDs hurr

Maybe you sould go back and read??

PS1 shat on the competition because it caught Nintendo and Sega with their pants down, 5th gen just so happened to be the least competent gen from the big 2 of the time.
Xbox managed to get it's foot in the door because Sega died but the Gamecube and PS2 were competent so it didn't blast away the competition.

gee i wonder why nobody bought the GC

If you didn't own a GC, PS2, And an Xbox/Dreamcast you were an absolute faggot.

a-all s-shit user! FUCK. YOU!

You mean like... All of em?

No just 3.

Newcomer and online gaming wasn't quite ready for the masses.

PS2 was too strong and GC predecessor was the N64, Nintendo public image was very damaged at that point.

BUT SINCE WHEN DID NEWCOMER MATTER? PSX WAS ALSO A NEWCOMER. SO. WHAT?

Playstation was a CD player.

A fucking good one aswell.

...

At least in my case NO GTA? Fuck Nintendo.

Ok? And Xbox could play DVD's and CD's as well, so?

Xbox came out a year late when PS2 was already in full momentum. And PS2 got a big price cut soon after Xbox was released. By then, it was too late to sell Xbox on the merit of playing media when PS2 had already captured that market.

So the Playstation launched at the time CDs were new and players were expensive.

The PS2 did the same with DVDs
Sony was a known brand for electronics and games
Microsoft was new to the scene and the xbox launched a full year after the PS2.

So that's why. Stop trying to give credit to a failed company. The consoles sold as well as they did for a fucking reason.

Better games, DVD player and better launch date. Why would anyone get GC or Xbox when PS2 was getting big titles like GTA3, Gran Turismo 3 and Metal Gear Solid 2.

Also N64 was a failure commercially. Playstation was much more popular and that seal of quality carried over to PS2.

>Stop trying to give credit to a failed company

Oh i see... This is not a discussion thread at all... Its a "fuck the PS2 thread or get out" thread. Nice.

no normie appeal like GTA or FIFA etc. also "Nintendo=kiddieshit" and all that

I ended up enjoying the GC way more because its top games easily BTFO the best PS2 games, for me at least.

>dvd player

cool graph my dude

>xbox was not a DVD player too

huh.

yeah, it wasn't

you needed an add-on

>So the Playstation launched at the time CDs were new
>CD players were released in 1982
>PSX was released in 1994

???

more like around when it gained in popularity

although I used a sega cd as my first actual cd player

>it literally couldn't play DVDs

Gymnastics

yeah it couldn't

you take it out of the box, put a dvd movie disc in it, and it won't play

>I used a sega cd as my first actual cd player

Woah user, so why didn't the Sega CD dominate??!!! It's a pretty important feature acording to this thread!

Tiny discs. Nobody wanted to port their games to it because they couldn't fit.

Honestly if it had bigger discs it would have been a serious rival to the ps2

The PS2 was better.

But it COULD be made to do it user. Did you know ANYONE with an Xbox who disn't buy that add on? It was as essential as the memory card for PS2

Not him but i never bought it. And it wasn't essential either.

I didn't even know it existed until recently despite having a xbox hueg

then again I played dvds on my PS2 anyway

Have you ever pirated a PS2 game? A lot of them fit in 1.5 GB (GC minidisc size), the rest of the DVD is just a bunch 0s. Minidisc was the less important issue the GC had.

>THE PS2 SOLD SO MUCH BECAUSE IT HAD A DVD PLAYER

>XBOX HAD DVD TOO, WHY DIDN'T IT SELL?

>IT WAS A NEWCOMER AND IT HAD A BAD CONTROLLER

>SOME BULL FUCKING SHIT POST ABOUT THE FUCKING ORIGINAL PLAYSTATION FOR NO GODDAMN REASON, A CONSOLE THAT DID NOT SELL AS WELL AS THE PS2, DID NOT HAVE A DVD PLAYER, AND WAS A NEWCOMER

Walk into traffic you miserable fucking piece of shit and learn to follow a fucking conversation.

>SOME BULL FUCKING SHIT POST ABOUT THE FUCKING ORIGINAL PLAYSTATION FOR NO GODDAMN REASON

No. A reason: whilst the PSX did indeed not sell as much as the PS2, it DID dominate the gen by a large margin DESPITE being a NEWCOMER. So NEWCOMER is not really a good reason is it?

Also:
>A CONSOLE THAT DID NOT SELL AS WELL AS THE PS2, DID NOT HAVE A DVD PLAYER

But that is not what you wrote, hence the confusion, pic related: you stated it could play DVD's. Don't tell me to follow a conversation properly if you can't even make sense in it.
