For the most part, they only ever do wholesale engine overhauls once a generation. Each year, it's about gameplay improvements (every sports game still have a gap between total control and what a controller can give you) and figuring out how to jew the player out of more money. Ultimate Team literally pays for multiple games for EA and 2K infests almost every mode with VC, pandering to the most vocal audience that plays on blacktop/park.
