Even if you knew the story, Gwyn is the bad guy of the whole story. He went out of his way to fuck up the natural order just for the gods to stay in power and keep humanity in check. If he hadn't linked the flame, more than half of the weird shit you see in Dark Souls wouldn't exist.

I couldn't tell you, I'm just playing through the series now. I started with Yakuza 0, which I think was a fine place to start aside from the fact that they improved the series in many ways after Yakuza 1. Ideally, I think you should start with Yakuza 1, but if you can't then Yakuza 0 is your next best bet.
