I saw this Splatoon promo art and realized, the theme of the these two games are very similar: hip kids being cool while painting graffiti, but the top one seems bad, and the bottom one seems awesome.
I'm not talking about the quality of the art. It's unfair to compare Nintendo artists to random mobile developers, but the execution of the core idea just become very bland in the top one, and somehow seems creative and exciting in the Splatoon one.
The top game is an endless runner called Subway Surfers, if you don't know about it. Also mobile vs console thread.

Everything about mobile gaming in general is bland.
That's because mobile is shit. Always.

Ask Sony
It's because of the colors. Top has a lot of brown and the colors look dark. Bottom is bright ass green and pink everywhere.
No black people in the bottom one.
Black squids exist

go shill your garbage somewhere else. sage.
Jesus fucking Christ user, you are what's wrong with this board. Fuck this, I'm out.
Its because of japanese culture in the mix and anime. Western games cant even compete with anime influences.
The top one looks pretty basic in what the image is trying to convey about the game
>People running while being chased
That gives you a pretty good feeling about what the game is about, now compare that to
>running jumping sliding gatling gun bright colourful intense fun
It looks more intense, it looks more involved, the squids look like they're having a lot of fun, where the top people are just sort of looking relaxed and cocky, like a day at the office of a job they enjoy.
Also the lighting makes the bottom look more real, and thus more relateable.
Dropped.
The Splatoon pic is vibrant and actually polished looking while the mobile pic is very gray looking and very clearly uses the 3D models. Also the train tracks in the middle of a canyon were an odd choice for a hip hop/graffiti theme
>and somehow seems creative and exciting in the Splatoon one.
Because you already know and like Splatoon.
The art direction in Splatoon is mostly horrible and lazy, coupling neon bright colors and grey in an extremely generic urban cartoon setting.
That one promo art in particular is horrible. Focus doesn't exist, value grouping doesn't exist, infact in that regard it's superior in the above screenshot, whereas splatoon's leads the eyes to the bloomiest part of the picture, the clouds. Failure from Nintendo's D tier team as it is to be expected.
Colorful stuff is nice, but when color is literally everywhere, color cannot pop anywhere. It just looks like a shiny mess. Which is what the bottom screen does.
Mind you, the top is also ugly, but yeah Splatoon has some of the worst aesthetic/art direction from nintendo in recent years. Even ARMS destroys it easily.
That was easy.
Knack 2 is out in exactly 2 months. Will this one be the true sequel to Super Mario Brother 2?

The Inklings despite being avatars have a very unique base design. The sharp teeth, the domino masks and the tentacle hair. Combine that with the ink aesthetic plus the colorful weapons and you get a distinctive design that's both cute and cool. The designs in the top image are pretty generic and their bright smiling baby faces veer too far in the cute direction. They're not as cool and edgy as the Inklings.
Thank fuck.
>Because you already know and like Splatoon.
Nah Splatoon was immediately appealing to a lot of people when it was first revealed.
because the top is stupid tagging culture and the bottom is paintball style action
Why do the Inklings wear masks anyway?
kill yourself mobile nigger
Also compare their facial expressions. The characters in the top game lack any sort of attitude.
The characters on the top image look like 3D renditions of Microsoft Office clip art. They're generic and bland.
