why do people keep using this as an example of a bad game?
Why do people keep using this as an example of a bad game?
Players can't tell what they're about to run into as they are moving incredibly fast. There's barely any warning and time for me to react.
I remember, as a kid, running into various hazards in the game, mostly because I didn't see them coming.
it's shit
>play the wrong way
>why do I keep running into pits ?
it was designed the wrong way faggot
>gives you amazing speed
>"but you can't use it haha idiot"
>i can't enjoy a game if i can't blast through it at top speed the first time around
modern gaming has really fucked you, hasn't it? There's this WACKY concept called "doing something multiple times to get good at it before you're able to fully utilize the tools given to you"
You can if you're good. The old Sonic games were about using momentum more than going fast in and of itself. Going fast consistently was a reward/challenge that came with repeated playing.
Sonic 1's level design falls apart after Green Hill Zone. The sequels are much better.
because they're retarded and unable to comprehend how game's physics work, that sometimes (when you have no rings) you need to play carefully and that you need to earn your speed through good timing and learning the stages' layouts
someone post that webm with ign or polygon or whatever modern """"""gaming authority""""" trying to play sonic mania and failing at going up a simple loop
i can assure you it's very representative of the skill level of players who bitch about genesis sonic games
2/3 improved upon it in almost every way and a lot of players kept getting stopped while trying to be fast.
A bad 2d sonic is still miles better than the best 3d sonic though
You wouldn't get as many contrarian points if you picked an obscure game that was actually shit.
>someone post that webm with ign or polygon or whatever modern """"""gaming authority""""" trying to play sonic mania and failing at going up a simple loop
Here you go, it was IGN by the way.
You shouldn't have to memorize a level to be able to go through it at a fucking comfortable speed.
thanks
Sounds like something a pussified faggot would say
>I'm not comfortable unless I'm the BEST
>waaaaaaaaaah
>You mean I have to avoid these half dozen obstacles?
>waaaaaaaaa that's like asking me to draw it from memory on a sheet of paper waaaaaa
find a rope and hang yourself with it
Because they can't play the game for shit, like this clown: >inb4 b-buh he's testing physics
Wrong.
this is painful to watch
>no spindash
literally unplayable, sonic spoiled me
Sonics my favorite series and I cant defend Sonic 1 or CD. Sonic 1 in particular is what I think to be the shittiest game in the series. Its not glitchy enough to exploit and have fun with that. Its not fast enough to feel cool with. The level design is awful and the music is repetitive. Classic sonic is entirely held up by 2, 3, and soon mania.
Theoretically I agree with you but the thing is that you can't fucking save. This means the effort to master later levels increases exponentially.
>level 109
>accomplish 20%, die because you didn't memorize the level
>start all fucking over again, not the level, the whole fucking game
>level 10
>accomplish 40%, die... repeat
This makes the game a lot longer than it fucking has to be. Imagine if you had to restart Super Mario world 10 fucking times just to memorize it.
level 10, not level 109. *fixed*
It's not a bad game but it would've been better if the screen was zoomed out 2x more than it was and then your rings don't save you.
Honestly, I find ring juggling autism to be the #1 skill in sonic which is retarded.
>theoretically I agree with you so I better just move these goalposts to satisfy my fetish-tier need to argue with people
yeah, i'll pass. have a good day.
he'll still defend it as a "feature", theres no point in arguing
Its because we are spoiled today by better graphics and senses of speed. I had a friend who didnt care for sonic until one day in december 2008, he downloaded the sonic unleashed demo for his 360. I think that is his most played demo EVER. I got the full game at launch and he still wanted to compare times with me on apotos day.
The point is that replaying old games doesn't feel as satisfying as more modern games. In that sense I can agree. Had I not grown up with the sonic mega collection, I probably wouldn't care for classic sonic either.
user, do you use the GameCube's d-pad or the analog stick for mega collection? Both seem shitty to me, but which one worked best for you?
Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the best platformers ever made. I'm not sorry you suck at video games and don't know how to properly use speed in a Sonic game. Only fags and uncoordinated women complain about this shit. Which one are you?
As a side note, I am saddened every day that you probably represent the modern gamer and there fore more and more game companies are going to keep making dumbed down games for children like you who have shit h/e coordination
Here's your fucking (((you))) for pissing me off enough to respond to you obvious troll.
Actually I played it on xbox. Went from nintendo 64 to gamecube/xbox to 360/wii and you know the rest. I cant say for the gamecube, but on xbox i alternated. If I played on gamecube I would probably stick with the...stick. Dpad was way to tiny
Not him but I used the analog stick when I was younger, I don't think I could go back to it now but I never really minded it back then. I think I might prefer it for 3D Blast though, playing that on my Genesis some years back felt a bit weird.
whats with all the sonic 1 elitists? sonic 2/3 blow the first out of the water and they don't have the same problem of being slow as fuck despite being classic games. also labyrinth zone is the worst level in the trilogy imo
Game is fun until Marble Hill Zone.
thanks guys
Donkey Kong Country and Yoshis Island wipe the floor with your precious Sonic.
>whats with all the sonic 1 elitists? sonic 2/3 blow the first out of the water
I don't think anyone is denying that, they're just denying the issues people see in Sonic 1 and personally speaking I gotta for the most part like the camera issue or memorization issue others have. I do feel as though the more slow platforming-focused level design in Marble Zone & Labyrinth Zone aren't fit for the series but I wouldn't say the game is overall negative due to this since Green Hill, Spring Yard, Star Light & even Scrap Brain if you're good enough are fast.
>and personally speaking I gotta for the most part
Meant to say "gotta agree".
No problem my dude. Still have my mega collection/sonic heroes double disc, hope it becomes BC on xbox one eventually
It's not bad per se, but it's an example of a game that was vastly improved in its direct sequels on the same console.
Fuck the Marble Zone. It ruined the game.
>play marble zone
>run forward
>suddenly, spring sends me into the lava
GAY
>b-b-but it gits gud when u play teh level 100000000000 tiems
kys
Sonic 2 and 3 were like this, but Sonic 1 wasn't
Labyrinth and Spring Yard have tons of these moments, even when you know the level its just shit placed in cancer areas
No one is denying that those are better games. Shit Sonic 2 is my favorite Platformer of all time. But that doesn't make Sonic 1 a great game that helped define a genre.
Exactly.
It's fast, until it stops letting you be fast.
I would put pretty much every 3D game above sonic 1.
>doesn't make Sonic *shit* game.
Corection
Because the logo isn't centered properly, it's ten or so pixels to the left.
because it is a bad game, sonic 2, CD 3& Knuckles are the only good 2d sonic games.
and it has its place in gaming history, but if someone's going to bother playing classic sonic these days they may as well just move on to 2/3, or just play mania when it comes out assuming it's as good as it looks
>i can't even shitpost correctly
god you're fucking retarded
3&K > CD > 1 > 2
This is a good list
1's far from perfect but something about 2 just pisses me off. I can't even place it. It's the only genesis era sonic game I don't enjoy playing. Even with Labryinth being a bitch to get through I don't hate it as much as I hate pretty much everything in 2 after mystic cave ends.
Desu mania already looks better than either. Have you seen all those slopes and curves? For once you can freely roll and feel the breeze without getting stopped 3 seconds later. Its like the whole game is chemical plant or hydrocity or ice cap. Mania is the best game this year
Idk, I thought it was fine outside of the part with the crushing marble pillars.
2 will always be my favorite though, nothing can really top it. Most climactic final boss theme too.
I wasn't expecting someone to agree with me on that, I feel almost the same way about 2 except it doesn't piss me off but just doesn't entertain me and I don't think I'll get what it is. It's certainly not a bad game but I just never go back to it like so many others do.
Because classic Sonic is rooted in the arcade-style philosophy of game design, like most Sega games back in the day. In today's world of Nintendo and movie games, that philosophy is dead and buried. Moreover, as Sega is famous for being Nintendo's old rival, people compare Sonic with Mario, which they really shouldn't be as the way they were designed is completely different, even if Sonic was supposed to be Sega's answer to Mario.
tl;dr version: people calling classic Sonic bad are either children or Nintendo fans who still haven't grown out of the 90s console wars.
...
yeah i'm hyped for it, and it's motherfucking widescreen too. i'm hoping mushroom hill zone makes the cut for one of the classic levels
Casuals aka nintenbros
I'm denying.
Speed is most rewarding in the first game.
Only sane person itt
I agree too, actually. I remember how back in the day people kept saying online that 2 was the undoubtedly best one, while I always preferred 3&K, even as separate games. I'd still probably put 1 and 2 on the same level though.
I wonder why the general opinion shifted towards 3&K being the best in recent years though.
>you can't fucking save
Oh boo hoo. The game isn't that long. You also couldn't save in arcade games but nobody complained there.
>I'm denying.
>Speed is most rewarding in the first game.
I agree. I like the zone design in 2 and the spin dash. DESU the first 3 sanic games are all really fucking high on my list.
>people complaining about having to memorize stage layout
You mean like, oh, I dunno, every fucking videogame ever made? Especially before 6th Gen. But no, Sonic is the only one people bitch about when it comes to this. How about you grow a fucking backbone and stop sucking at videogames? You're not meant to be instantly pro at the game the minute you first boot it up like most shitty modern games do for you.
You probably shouldn't be playing games.
>youtu.be
I didn't know some of those strats, mostly the first one and the little boosts of spinning near those blocks you break. Nice run there. I still don't feel the zone fits the series too much though.
The difference between Mario and Sonic is that in Mario if you die it's 100% your own faul, so after your 2nd or 3rd try you are more careful and you rarely die.
I you die in Sonic it's because the developers decided to tell you to go fuck yourself and even after 10 tries you will still die.
>You're not meant to be instantly pro at the game the minute you first boot it up like most shitty modern games do for you.
But, user, don't you know I have a job that takes up all my time so I don't have time to devote to playing games or some other tired bullshit we've all heard before about why casuals can't git gud
show me how fast you can go on labyrinth zone
Even with that argument, like says, it's not even that long. 19 levels (counting Final Zone), each one can be finished in under 10 minutes, 5 minutes if you're half-decent. That's less than 90 minutes on a half-decent run - maybe a little more if you go for all the Chaos Emeralds.
Casuals were a mistake and shouldn't be playing videogames.
>Sonicfags entire argument is "lol just memorize the exact layout of every level otherwise don't go as fast as the developers designed and marketed Sonic to go"
Really makes you wonder why Sonic attracts so many autists
>I wonder why the general opinion shifted towards 3&K being the best in recent years though.
Probably because 3&K sold far less compared to Sonic 2 so people missed out on those and played them later. 3&K is really excellent and deserves a lot of praise in my opinion, it added a shitload of zones with great level design that had the perfect mix of speed & exploration and then you have 3 playable characters with their own skills and mix that with the new elemental shield and 14 Emeralds to collect to give them all Super/Hyper forms. It expanded upon the classic series so fucking well in my opinion.
That's 190 minutes.
3 hours is pretty fucking long for a platformed considering often you are FORCED to go slow, because of traps. And if you make a mistake you have to start those 3 hours all over again? Fuck that shit.
A normal person can go through Sonic 1 in under 40 minutes. A speedrunner finished it in 15.
That's the only zone you can't go fast like the others. Still better designed than Wing Fortress or Sandopolis even better than ice cap if you ask me
>A normal person can go through Sonic 1 in under 40 minutes.
Granted I've played it for years but a week ago I rebeat it in around that much time, maybe a bit higher (with all emeralds included) so I can vouch for this.
you can't even defend it lol, sonic 1 has 6 zones, having 1 of the zones in the middle of the playthrough be complete shit drags down the game a LOT
sonic 1 will be obsolete once mania comes out and includes the good levels from it
>That's 190 minutes.
If you're really fucking bad at the game, sure. I used 190 minutes because each level has a 10 minute time limit. And if you somehow hit that, you suck at videogames. Even Labyrinth Zone levels can be completed by a casual in under 6 minutes.
Speed is a reward for having good reaction time and critical thinking skills.
If you failed often as a child, you were probably too young.
I beat Sonic for the first time when I was 7, btw. I beat it again at 27 using a clickwheel when it was released for the iPod Classic.
remember Sonic Advance 2? that's your ticket, it's essentially press right to win (unless it's that asshole of a zone Sky Canyon)
and if you want my thoughts, eh, Marble Zone just drains me of any interest
It doesn't need defense.
Also to make S1 obsolete they should be fixing the game's flaws, not relying on what the previous games did exceptionally. So if you really think Labyrinth Zone is that bad you should want it included in Mania.
Am I the only one who thinks that Sonic wasn't moving fast enough in this game?
>all the people ITT saying that it's okay because it rewards memorization
There is a huge difference between memorization and beginners traps.
Sonic 1 is filled to the brim with beginners traps. Springs/Ramps that send you right into spikes/lava/enemies, enemies that come out of fucking nowhere, that pit at the beginning of Scrap Brain Act 1, etc.
In a game like Mario World, you can play at any pace you want. Is it your first playthrough, and you want to go slow and take your time? You can. Have you memorized the levels and want to blaze through the game? You can do that, too.
Sonic's acceleration means that you have to fight the game if you want to go slow, and you need to go slow constantly in your first playthrough if you want to avoid the beginners traps. It actively fucks beginners by making their first playthroughs either really frustrating (if they go fast and run into the bullshit trap/enemy placement) or really dull (if they fight the game and go slow)
if you go slow, it's mediocre platformer.
if you go fast, it feel like you're barely in control of Sonic.
Yes
Only faggots do
>that pit at the beginning of Scrap Brain Act 1
You know you can just... hold down to look down, right? It's the last set of levels in the game. You should know not to jump into pits that you can't see the bottom of by now.
"Pit" as in the part of the floor that opens up and drops you into a bottomless pit.
If you are just holding right and don't know it's there, you'll die.
The ground is a metallic blue.
The trap doors are bright red and white.
Get fucking good.
The problem wasn't that it didn't stand out, it was that I didn't see it coming. By the time I noticed something was wrong with the floor and pressed left, Sonic had too much momentum and fell in.
There are visual cues, it's your fault for not noticing them
So fucking painful to watch
You have shit reaction time. Sonic clearly wasn't designed around people who have the reaction time of a sloth.
I can't go back to the original game after playing the taxman port, who knew adding 16:9 and a spindash to sonic 1 can improve the overall experience so much, still hate Labyrinth zone though
I love how everyone posts thing acting like IGN didn't know how to play, when it was really them testing the physics to see if it wasn't shit like sonic 4.
For once they were actually doing something you would expect them to do, since they're game reviewers, instead of being shit at the game.
It stood out, so you can see it coming. Holy shit, how dense are you?
Marble Zone.
That is all.
Actually if you watch the original video it totally disproves this. The player is legitimately just bad, hell during the part of the webm ( youtu.be
name a single visual cue that there is about to be a collapsing bridge other than the bridge itself
I would be okay with the whole "reaction time" thing if you were actually in a situation where you would be on edge, but this is the beginning of the fucking level. There's no reason to think "oh yeah I gotta be careful, there might be a point ahead where the floor will fall out from under me"
Of course, if a beginner jumped and didn't start holding left, they'll fall into the pit directly after this one that's barely offscreen.
A well designed game would put you in a situation where you can see this without putting you in direct danger, such as putting a block in front of the drop that new players will run into, showing them that the floor does that. Experts can just jump over the block and the pit.
By the time it's onscreen you're going too fast to stop.
A lot of issues, such as this one, got fixed in the mobile port. Suddenly you actually have time to see this coming due to the game being in widescreen.
When does that happen?.
Because after a few tries you remember where everything was.
Because for some reason, most people today don't even know how to fucking play it. Which baffles me, because it's not even that hard of a game.
I can prove to you that sonic making you fuck up when you don't play to its rules is bullshit, because if you play Turok with HFOV, the game runs incredibly fast and there is never point where you feel like you're clumsily running into the environment. Why can't Sonic be like turok?
It's just an example of a bad series.
The first 2 sonic games are vidya kino.
All aids and normal people repellent after that.
