Basically the game came out in March and it was ruined by amiibo in April. At the start people would just use one Epona to get to Ganon in any% and it was fine. Spawning a god horse at any time is OP, but it's not important enough that it needs to be banned. However we didn't know enough about amiibo before deciding to allow them in runs. Next thing you know people can spawn food that gives guaranteed triple damage up if you cook it (RNG if you don't use it and slower to get ingredients.) That saves another bunch of time in any%.

Thats all fine in any% because nobody really cares about that category after a month. Most people run All Dungeons. All Dungeons has much more use for epona, and you can only get one epona per amiibo. Optimal route requires at least 6 separate amiibo for all of the eponas. But that's not all. Stasis launches were discovered using trees, rocks, and crates which give you an insane amount of flight speed for fast travel. For example you can launch from tabantha stable to rito village using only two trees. Great thing about this trick is you can only do it when objects are available to do it on. But guess what you can spawn with amiibo? Crates. Guardian amiibo drops metal crates which are by far the easiest objects to get stasis launch on. And you can spawn them anywhere. This brought the amiibo total to at LEAST 13 and saved several minutes. Not only are amiibos required, but you need 13 of them just to come close to a competitive time. 13 amiibos at retail price costs 170 dollars. Not to mention they are rare amiibos (smash link and guardian) and that drives the price up.

So here's the most controversial thing. To get around the obnoxious cost of amiibo, runners bought what are known as "NFC" tags, which stores and replicates a RFID signal that mimics an amiibo. These cost anywhere from 3-5 dollars each depending on how many you buy. Runners now use third party, unauthorized hardware to change aspects of the game in order to go faster. Something that not every runner has access to.

This literally all could have been avoided if the mods of the community simply banned amiibos from the start, which should be the norm from now on. Which is also what a lot of runners and of course the community on forums has said for long time. But instead, they told us to fuck off so they can pay2win the records. If the run used no amiibo it would be fair to everyone, which imo is the whole reason for a leaderboard.

There are a couple of things where amiibos make the run better. For example horses are ass and catching n taming a level 4 horse equal to epona is straight garbage. There is only one 4 speed horse off the plateau and it's not easily marked. 4 speed horse saves about 15 seconds per minute of riding or something, it is a significant amount of time. For that reason I would be in favor for an arbitrary "one time" epona in which you have to register and use for the rest of the run. It would only require one amiibo and would just give a faster form of transportation without going through bullshit.

But instead, they irresponsibly jumped the gun despite the warnings from the community. Now the longest "runnable" category all shrines uses over 100 amiibo (in the form of nfc tags of course) which is utterly ridiculous. Now a lot of the hype for the game died down because top times go crazy over amiibo usage, and afaik they still haven't split the leaderboard. The game is really fun and chill to run but if the competitiveness is decided by money it ruins the experience.
