Virtual pet thread.
A whole lot of virtual pet stuff is shovelware apps. I'm surprised devs haven't capitalized on virtual pet games, even outside of sub-games like Pokemon Amie/Refresh or whatever's going on in Kingdom Hearts 3D.
I miss the connectivity of the slightly later Tamagotchis and of Digimon.
I kind of wish Chao Garden was its own game, too.
Does Dragons Dogma count? I mean shit, I equipped my Neopets for battle just about as thoroughly
seeing this made me want to get one for a nostalgia trip but they're pretty expensive

I had the Tamagotchi, multiple Giga Pets, and a few Digimon. I would say the one I played the most was Digimon because you could battle people, but I almost always ended up getting the shitmon because I was terrible at keeping my digital pets alive. I've been playing Magikarp Jump, which isn't really a virtual pet app, but it's close enough.

We've never gotten a modern virtual pet video game. The latest we've gotten that pushed the technology and capabilities of the time was way back with the first Digimon World.

It does nothing to push the formula. Besides the graphics it could have been a PS1 game.
The way I believe it works is the Tamagotchi is made up of 4 parts (Body, eyes, torso decoration, head decoration) and when 2 tamagotchis have a baby, you get 2 parts from each parent. How the parts are decided, I don't know. In my picture the parents were Mametchi and Himebaratchi

You only need 1 to do almost everything. The only time you need 2 is if you want to unlock 2 unique locations because they rely on linking with other people's M!Xs. Kinda sucks but I've been happy with my 1 M!X
