I never managed to shoot down the first aircraft of the game. Since the sensor/targeting update I tend to miss the enemy by roughly 25 degrees, and with advanced cannons I can't even pierce wood. I'm usually good at engineering games, why can't I get the hang of this one?

That's platinum games for you. You can get good at them but they can be beaten in pretty cheap and shitty ways. I didn't meet a person that would have trouble finishing Bayonetta but they would all suck at it.
