I think the author has a point with how video games make it easier to forsake the world. I do think Smith is making a mistake by implying that video games cause this behavior, but is on the right track in saying video games enable it. I mean if someone asked me how to keep themselves entertained while they were shut in for months with broken legs, I'd suggest video games. By the same token, someone that doesn't want to interact with the world can just play vidya all day.

I think a big part of it that bit right there. No one wants to be stuck working forever, but the only viable alternative for most people is to just not work. If you can live in relative comfort by doing nothing, why work super hard for so little more? People aren't aware how easy it is to succeed, or how few years you actually need to work before you can retire if you plan on staying single (even less if you get married and never have kids). Very few people are given reasons to do anything like that other than being told it's what they're "supposed" to do, and who gives a shit about that?

Stop blaming young men for everything and maybe good young men will start doing more and coming back to become part of a good society.

For career, there's a few options:
- Get a STEM or business degree. Pretty much guaranteed an office job. STEM almost always pays more but is harder.
- Join the military. Get a job with a defense contractor when you leave and enjoy a cushy civilian job doing exactly what you did before for more money and nice military and corporate benefits.
- Learn a trade. Good ones are plumbing, auto repair, and electrician because those are never going away. Welding is also good right now because there's not enough of them.

Now, getting hired is a process. If you lack experience, you'll probably spend at least 3 months applying for jobs. Potentially more or less, but that's pretty normal. You can start to do that before you actually finish your school/training so you have something lined up as soon you're ready.

Girl is another thing entirely.
