Good gameplay can remove the need for a good story.
On the other hand, a good story can not make up for shitty gameplay.

Who are you quoting?
*farts*
it does tho
the only reason Sup Forums praises it is because it's Japanese and has muh qt android waifu
But Nier has neither, so what does that make Nier?
>There are people who will defend hacking as 9S
*inhales*
HAHAHAA-COUGHGHCOUGHGHCOUGH
Play original Drakengard/NieR then tell me that Automata has bad gameplay
Meme shit for retards. Which is actually the only thing people on this site recommend. Litterally every game pushed here is crap, and the hated ones are the most fun.
For example pubg is really fun. Even though I usually don't like that stuff the guys at work talked me into and I have had a blast with it. Played six hours over the weekend. And nier was trash for psuedo intellectual faggots. Could barely get through the second "playthrough." Fuck this site.
>a good story can not make up for shitty gameplay
Picture related as fuck
Ottawa's gameplay would be a lot easier to appreciate with better difficulty settings.
Normal isn't demanding enough to not resort to button mashing and hard is too punishing until you start getting good plug-ins half way through the game. Even then it changes the death state and the two hit kill becomes a lot less desirable of a challenge when the save points dwindle in the end levels.
>good story
Let's not get crazy now.
OP's quote rings true for the original NieR, but not Automata
but it does have good gameplay. It's your fault for expecting bayonetta from a game whose themes preclude a combo meter.
Fair enough, but it was the only thing that made me finish it. I have no fucking idea how this can be overwhelmingly positive, have they not played any good old jRPG like Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2? You know, games with actual gameplay mechanics.
A far more related pic.
Had an incredible heart wrenching story, but the gameplay is shot to hell, in fact the AI is so bad it can actually affect the emotional impact of the story if you had a really bad time with Trico.
But Sup Forums loves Planescape while admitting it's gameplay is dogshit.
Pic unrelated?
I wouldn't really consider Nier: Automata a JRPG. Sounds to me like you went in expecting a game that Automata isn't.
Eh, the story was kinda ruined by the fact shitty indie games on Steam stole their thunder
This game would have been GOTY in 2009 & stood out among the TACTICOOL FPS bullshit, but these days i thought it was forgettable
Witcher has a dogshit gameplay but the story compensates
>that picture
FUCKING
SAUCE
>platinum lite is bad gameplay
It's not Bayonetta but it's reaching to call it "bad", if that's bad you have retarded standards for good or even average.
Why do people keep acting like combat is the only "gameplay" to be had in an RPG?
>remove the need
A video game doesn't need good story, or a story at all.
>On the other hand, a good story can not make up for shitty gameplay.
Depends on what you mean by "shitty", because Sup Forums's definition seems to be "not incredible". Games with decent or mediocre gameplay can be carried by a good story, characters or whatever. If the gameplay is bad or just shitty, then yes, being a game doesn't matter anymore.
I thank you kind user.
Hope you have a great night.
>I wouldn't really consider Nier: Automata a JRPG.
Then what the hell is it?
Why do people keep saying it's shitty, at least call it what it is mediocre. Story was fine but it's very hit and miss depending if it clicks with you or not.
They expected DMC just because they heard Platinum was doing the combat.
you niggas need to play more video games if you consider automata's gameplay shit
This is something that I always bring up. Just talking to NPCs should be a very meaty part of gameplay in an RPG are you only playing a tabletop RPG when fighting monsters? No one thinks that so why is vidya gameplay just seen as combat.
>but it's not DMC or Bayonetta so it's terrible
I don't understand people saying that it's good either. The combat in this game is serviceable just like the combat in the original Nier was serviceable. The best part of the game is when you can play as 9s and skip all the combat by instant killing everything.
>it's another gameplay = only combat thread
But a good ass can
>it cannot be bad because it could be worse
flawless logic
More like a fantastic cast.
>it's gameplay is dogshit.
No, it's combat is dogshit as far roleplaying goes it's probably the second or third game ever.
>They expected decent combat from a company that has produced it before
What were they thinking
I've never understood Sup Forums's obsession with gameplay (read:combat) when over half the shit Sup Forums recommends have serviceable to straght up bad gameplay. I don't think Xenoblade Chronicles, Fallout New Vegas, and Metal Gear Rising have stellar gameplay, but they're still among my of my favorite games because the complete package is very enjoyable.
Platinum has never made anything on the level of DMC3 or 4 in terms of combat.
So what did you do with pascal?
fapbait for horny teenagers and manchildren
>a good story can not make up for shitty gameplay.
This game proves you wrong
The shooter sequences were pretty good though. I don't know why people didn't like the hacking, it was the best part of the game.
I wouldn't go that far about that hacking, but I didn't mind it. It was so short I barely noticed how much I was doing it at times.
This is how I rank games, especially ones from this year. I never allow anything to disguise bad gameplay. You have to have good game mechanics otherwise nothing else will redeem you. Take not of what games pass and fail my criteria, and you'll see how sad the AAA industry has gotten.
Playing through it right now, still in route A.
Adam and Eve are probably the most retarded villains I have ever seen in a video game, combat isn't satisfying at all, and the story is really meh.
I think I'm going to go back to MGR.
Well I'm glad I didn't have mostly the same opinion and was able to enjoy the game a whole lot. Eve really is stupid though.
Spec Ops: The Line. Great story. The gameplay is an absolute slog with boring ass weapons and enemies.
That's the reason I hated the last of us, gameplay was so mediocre couldn't finish the game, who cares about the story when the game is unfun I still don't understand how that game was so loved by normies and critics
>if a game has any of the following, i take points off
>being popular
i love the people who won't enjoy a game just because other people like it
i bet you're really fun at parties, but you probably don't go to them because they're too mainstream
>still in route A.
You aren't even close to being done dude.
Popularity is always used as a defense for bad game design, as the most common defense is "you have [criticism]? Well, alot of people don't care about that, so it's not a problem with the game haha you mad".
So simply put, I take points off for it because of the audacity to imply that popularity makes your game immune from criticism.
The cool weapons and combat were literally the only reasons I finished Taro's shitty robodrama. Whats so bad about the gameplay?
That's such backwards logic. Have you ever considered a game is popular and high scoring because it has good game design?
Yeah and I'm bored.
>Have you ever considered a game is popular and high scoring because it has good game design?
Sorry mate, but high scores and popularity aren't reserved for good games.
Then stop playing it because I can already tell you won't like the next route. Its not for you, put it down and go play something else.
You meant BRAAAP right?
*inhales*
*crosses legs*
haha how disgusting... can't believe you did that...
Shit enemy variety
good enough for 90% of Sup Forums then
Cain and Lynch is a good example of a game with bad gameplay that is still a good game
Luckily Automata has good gameplay AND story!
Normalfags bought it so I guess it had general appeal.
>Determining if a game is good by binary "Having thing or not having thing"
fucking what
Oh is this the shitposting thread?
But whether a game is popular doesn't actually affect the quality of a game in itself at all.
These games don't have shitty gameplay though. Berseria's is complicated but gets so fucking good when you learn the mechanics and Automata has very good combat for an RPG, and every movement is buttery smooth and elegant.
Am I being trolled?
>On the other hand, a good story can not make up for shitty gameplay
no
>47 fps
lmaoing@ur life, peasant
If you wanted another The Witcher 3 hate thread you should've just said so, OP.
>still in route A
So you only just started then
What went wrong? At first I thought the combat had suffered because of the stat based rpg elements but then I realized it was just shallow mash attack/hack to win.
It looks good but it has less depth than fucking BamHam combat.
To be fair if Platinum hadn't developed it you wouldn't expect much and end up being pleasantly surprised but the combat is a joke compared to Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising.
Ignoring that the story is pseudo-intellectual garbage written by the mind of a 5 year old hack Yoko Taro. The only redeeming features of the game are the aesthetics, soundtrack and porn.
>what went wrong
Your expectation.
The biggest mistake was that this game got shilled an absurd amount when the original was a niche title.
Really the fans are to blame.
Despite lackluster combat and schizophrenic story, I still very much enjoyed playing the game, mainly for aesthetic reasons. 9/10, second only to Hollow Knight this year.
>Awful difficulty balancing (normal too easy; hard too difficult)
>Some chips when stacked broke the combat, like auto-heal / offensive heal.
>Very little depth to the combat and most of the weapons/pods programs are useless.
>Upgrading is determined by shitty crafting system (with some of the required items being a pain to collect)
>Shmup sections suffer from little variety, with the same flying enemies doing the same patterns and that you can just roll through by spamming sword attack
>The majority of the side-quests are fetch quests or A to B quests
There are probably more flaws that I can't think of right now.
>but then I realized it was just shallow mash attack/hack to win
So Bayonetta and MGR? Honestly, if you people played Nier, this wouldn't be much of a surprise. Its definitely a step up from Nier, but the core of the gameplay is still there, this one just happens to be flashier. Your first problem was going in expecting Bayonetta 3 instead of Nier 2.
What if I was just expecting a good game?
>On the other hand, a good story can not make up for shitty ga-
>good story
t. Todd Howard
>nothing but dated metroidvanias
Can you imagine having this bad of tastes?
>On the other hand, a good story can not make up for shitty gameplay.
tell that to telltale games
not defending their shitty asses
Its a really good game but I wouldn't say it has a good story, the story is literally just track down benny, then just go around convincing different factions to help you, it isn't really anything special (though a lot of the other aspects of the game are).
>Shitty gameplay
>He didn't travel the mojave as a former black panther boxer getting revenge on the evil white men who oppressed his people and delivering justice one black fist at a time
Who was in the wrong here?
I want to fug A2.
