Two members of his unit died, and later on his best friend who saved his life (Beard) was killed in the San Francisco bombing, an attack by the Russians on the US. I'm pretty sure the thing he throws off the roof in the first game is a picture of them together. He had a personal vendetta.
Beard was already dead prior to HM1, Jacket was hallucinating him. And yes, the nuke killed pretty much everyone in the end.
