Witch and the Hundred Knight forces you to spend you to spend an hour and twenty minutes forcing you to learn how to push buttons on a controller. Then the first area explains the ins and outs of various combat systems you won't care about or use.
Then the game omits the explanation on how to actually succeed by setting up your equipment appropriately before venturing out into an area; this results in the player faceplanting the second the training wheels are removed.

I was late to the dragon quest series because I started with DQVII ps1 version and expected a cool game from the start. I eventually got stuck and bored and dropped it.
Sometime later I emulated DQV DS and that was when I realized how good the series is.

XII is like this too. Only when you get Ashe permanently on your party you can use the true potential of the game. It takes a while, most people give up before it but is just when the game turns better (if you can ignore the story)
