I actually play Smash 4 doubles the most. I just hate how the game plays. Melee has objectively the best mechanics and gamefeel out of all of them, and I can't even do that wavedash bullshit. But the mere weight and speed of the game is much better.

Esp since Smash 4 has a lot of unbalanced bullshit, like characters with absurd moves (Corrin, Bayonetta, etc...), excessive focus on shields, way too easy recovery, most combos coming from grabs, rage mechanic, etc...

Melee is a much more fun game to play than Smash 4, it also had a much more interesting stage selection, wheras Brawl and 4 just made a fuckton of either boring stages or gimmicky stages with excessively stage hazzards. Stuff like Brinstar Depths, Pokefloats, and Big Blue showed a lot of promise, as they weren't unfair, but still added a fair deal of challenge.

Sakurai has done his part in making Smash Bros, but honestly, it's time for him to move on and for a new director to take the helm.

He's holding the series back now. At the end of the day, it's a fanservice game, yet he's not even good at that anymore.

Yes, back in 2001 I think. I rented Smash 64 a couple times prior to, but I never owned it. Melee is the game responsible for getting me into fighting games properly, as I never played SF as a kid, and I was too dumb to do the special moves in MKII on the SNES when I was 5.

Melee was the first Smash game I properly owned, and worked to get good at. During HS, we used to have mini tournaments in the rec room, and I was among the best in my school. I also made great friends who then got me into Guilty Gear XX, Budokai 3, and Soul Calibur 2.

I don't see how any of that is negative. I pity anyone who got into Fighting games through Brawl or Smash 4. You missed the Golden Era of MvC and Guilty Gear, and jumped in when a rift was created between the Smash community and the FGC. So it's not like many Smash fans got to jump into USF4 or Blazblue.

I still remember being hyped for Brawl too, what a disappointment that was. Me and my friends all dropped it like 6 months in and never looked back. Thank god for mods fixing that game. Smash 4 is indeed better, but not by a large margin. It's not as blatant about its casualizatio as Brawl was, but it's still intentionally trying to put casual play first over competitive play.

It's genuinely sad that we'll likely never see a Smash game with controls as tight as Melee expand on all that again.
