What do you even do in idolm@ster?
I just watch the videos, it doesn't really give any hints about the gameplay though.

Get IM@S2 on PS2 and use imas2.wota.info/ for whatever you don't understand

if you just want to get high score you don't have to understand japanese but be prepared for kanji hunting to not pick the wrong answer

it's a rhytm and management game. traing the girls, equip them with cute dresses and artifacts, and make them dance for top score ranks

Play the PSP translations. Sun has all three translated, Moon only has Chihaya, while Star has Iori and Yukiho.

It's basically an arcade game with a sort of calendar system. You need to rank up and gain fans after a set period of time or its game over.

Basicaly divide into three stuff. Commus where you talk to the chick and raise affection and get to know her. Training which are minigames to increase stats. Then Auditions where you battle other idols to join lives which are your main source of fans.

Your outfit and song choice affect your tats as well.

I thought you got to choreograph the dances and plan the events and stuff like that.

So are all of the PS3/PS4 idolm@ster games different enough to warrant playing all of them or should I just play the newest one on the PS4 once I learn Japanese?

Starlight Stage is pretty damn good

On top of what has already been mentioned there is also a mobile game with the original girls now, Theater Days. It's a mobile game, but it even has some nice communications and stuff.

Theri faces are definitly too flat, it depends on the angle I guess, from the right angle they look much better.

There are some idol abilities, but yeah for the most part it's really just a rythm game. And if you want to play that kind of game you should play Theater Days instead.

That's not true though. You just expect way mroe than a mobile game from a proper console game and that's where PS fails.

It is true. Starlight Stage has far more content than Platinum Stars and most of it comes with the -free- base game.
Both games have bonus costumes locked behind a paywall so that's a moot point.
In terms of gameplay I really feel like the mobage both have PS beat.

I prefer the management aspect that was in the PS3 games, but Platinum Stars is just outright worse in almost all ways that it's mobile counterparts.

Tbh ss was never an option for me to begin with just based on the idols in the game.

Sure, PS has 3D commus but they're still reusing the same animations from 2, not exactly mindblowing.
SS has no 3D but it has far more of them.
TD does have 3D.

The mobage have live events which PS doesn't.
The mobage have a steady stream of free updates.

They are all missing content from the older games but PS is genuinely the worst game of the recent lot.
