If you also enjoy puzzles, La-Mulana.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is a classic from the Master System, though it is a bit short.

all i can think of
it's not as good, but definitely in that vain
perhaps more like fez with the music and aesthetic, but still worth a look into

i had more fun than frustration with it

Im gonna try to get my hands on the snes mini or w.e soon. and also idk these newer games feel more polished and have it bit more to them based off their inspirations

Windows only:

Pharaoh Rebirth
Gigantic Army
Satazius
Zangeki Warp

You'd probably like Ori

Touhou Double Focus.

...

Since you're on PS4 and actually enjoyed Axiom Verge (I did too, it's just too obtuse for most people), you might also want to try Rain World.

Cave Story (if you somehow haven't already played it)
Castle in the Darkness
CrossCode
Dungeons of Dredmor
Environmental Station Alpha
Gunpoint
Halfway
Hammerwatch
Hyper Light Drifter
Momodora 4
Oniken
Volgarr the Viking
Rain World
Risk of Rain

Thx

>Castle in the Darkness
The OST in that game is pretty fucking great.

I second this.

I did a review on these two games, if you're interested. I highly recommend Ninja Senki for the low price and tight controls, but Titan Souls doesn't carry as much value for me. Both games are good, though.

Mercenary Kings is good too, especially with friends, but that game really tests your patience with how often content is repeated. I can't really recommend it because of that but it's alright if you're still looking for something else.

Shovel Knight is arguably the best there is. You're going to have a hard time topping it.

Blaster Master Zero.

Any games like this that can run on a toaster?

Some other games, that haven't been mentioned yet:

Odallus
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
Owlboy
Slain: Back from Hell
Spaceport Hope
Titan Souls
Underrail

Titan Souls was mentioned:
Odallus looks cool but I haven't tried it myself. Maldita Castilla looks awesome too but I have no idea how it is.

There's a freeware version to check out. It's Ghost n Goblins but not cheap, basically.

Since people are suggesting more than just sidescrollers, I might as well recommend the Ys games. Top-down Zelda-ish but much more fast paced and less about puzzles. Start with Ys I & II Chronicles+, it includes the first 2 games.

It also has one of the best soundtracks, it in fact includes 3 different versions of them:

Complete version:

Chronicles version:

Original PC88 MIDI version:

You can also mod it to get the PC-Engine version of the soundtrack.

the ones about the red guy with the harem?

The main character, Adol, has red hair if that is what you mean. Not sure what you mean by harem though.

It's not Rance you're talking about, is it?

nah, it was adol. but if he doesn't have a harem, i've been bamboozled about this series for years

For some reason, I always thought Ys was an RPG / Strategy game like Fire Emblem. I should check it out.

dude just emulate

Hmm, I haven't played all of the games but it seems like there's a new love interest girl for every game, but nothing really comes of it and it is generally not relevant to the story.

For example in Zelda TP you have Midna, in Link's awakening there's Marin and so on. It's more like that.
