Still, video games will almost always be behind any big budget 3d animation.

Why? The in-house programs they use to generate cast light and shadows is far beyond what would be created in real time, currently.
There's also Zootopia where no current game really emulates that level of fur manipulation.

Suppose the main thing is real time being behind pre-rendered shouldn't be a surprise.

user, the model polycount and the lighting are still Buzz Lightyears ahead of KH3's.

Fascial animations are completely dead, or not existent really.
The graphics are nice and all, but the only serious improvement is the textures in the end.
The light is still shit compared to the movie sadly, but a big step up.

It's really the lack of facial expressions that gets me.

I don't even care if a character has more polygons than usual or has more realistic this and that, if it doesn't deliver proper facial reactions, you're not using yourcharacter model to its utmost potential. It fucking freaks me out to see a character have this cold stare that doesn't fit the situation at all.

Because polygon count in movie CGI is a non-concern, all of the rendering time is eaten up by the ray tracing. While models for games need to be pretty well optimized polygon wise.

In pre-rendered videos and movies they have to physically emulate light while video games are a series of cheap tricks to make it look more in depth than it really is so everyones shitty favorite platform can run it.

Not him but when games are ported to PC they have to accommodate for 80% of people who play PC games on toasters which run worse than the console counterparts. The 20% remaining get an unoptimized game which also gets modified for the console release.

Lighting. In Toy Story took hours and hours to render each frame, most of that is down to the lighting being simulated. It still isn't doable in real time today, not even close, so even the oldest CGI movie is going to look a lot better lighting wise than even the best video game for a long time.

also with games, lighting will always be a huge draw back, most games are EXTREMELY limited with lighting, and use faux lighting techniques to hide the fact that all levels have maybe like 2-3 light sources, while rendered video will have 15 light sources reflections refractions, shadows, everything your pleb ass games will never have because youll hit negative FPS trying to re-render a scene 150 times due to 150 different variations of light

The only thing you've got right here is lighting and polygon count, the latter which doesn't even really matter that much because modern vidya models still look better anyway. Animation is far better today than it was back then, and the textures are very clearly more detailed in the movie vs KH3 examples.
