Why is MAME such a nightmare to setup?
Why is MAME such a nightmare to setup?
what the fuck is "MAME" ?
>download mame
>doesn't work the first time
what the fuck is the developer's problem?
they're literally the linux of gaming
it's not
underage gtfo
it's not? there's tons of guides and stuff
it's so much harder to work with. Installing and running ROMS is so much easier on like, EVERY other emulator. MAME is a pain in the ass, and trying to circumvent it with LaunchBox is a pain in the ass too. I'm not going to pretend I'm super computer literate, but I have never had a big problem emulating until I decided to try MAME.
thanks
calm down, I'm 29 and never bothered with emulators
> there's tons of guides and stuff
exactly
other emulators just work by opening the .exe and loading up the game
mame, you need to configurations and shit that requires fucking guides
Because mame is emulating several systems, while other emulators are simply emulating single standardized hardware.
are you one of those teenagers I keep hearing about who have 0 patience and need instant gratification constantly?
It's so hard to run a CPS-2 bios and have it run on mame and then launchbox.
THIS
but why can't it just work like other emulators...it's been around forever, they should have figured it out by now. the interface is horrible
Which guide is the best? Not OP but I tried two different ones and still couldn't get shit to work. I think they left something out between the setup and the actual running of games.
It's one of those internet jokes that's really popular like pepe the frog or black people.
So what MAME games are you guys playing right now?
I'm trying to get a 1CC going on Final Fight.
I would understanding using MAME to setup your own personal arcade cabinet. But I just want to emulate games on windows, calice or nebula is good enough for me, mame is completely unnecessary.
This is actually what makes it bad software. Good software should do one thing and do it well.
well if i got the shit to WORK, I'd probably be playing AvP. Cadillacs and dinosaurs is really good too. Hopefully I get to play some Neo Geo fighters once I get it to WORK
The name is literally Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. That's its job and it's in the title.
But that would mean literally hundreds of emulators. Besides it takes just a bit of time to get hang of MAME, it would take much longer to set-up all the alternative emulators.
Fuck off Theo, people are sick of your UNIX preaching.
you think mame's hard to setup, try setting up retroarch mame
Just get the multplayer enabled MAME, has minimal setup although you can only play the games on their list. It's a long list but not everything and you have to download the right rom.
but why are there so many steps to just get it running, or have it run in LaunchBox? That shouldn't have anything to do with emulating multiple machines.
>mfw my name is Theo
>I thought you were responding to me at first
wew
>calice or nebula
will look that up, thx
the one time I tried to set MAME up to play some SvC and Metal Slug I quit a few hours in and just downloaded Kawaks.
>the linux of gaming
no support, no software and requires you to write 50 lines of code for the progress equivalent of a mouse stroke?
Just get a GUI version of mame, dump your ROMs into the ROM folder, then hit f5 when you bring MAME up
Use tab to configure controls. There you go.
>download mame
>download rom
>put rom in rom folder
>???
>profit
Will running that within launchbox be easy? I am now using MAMEuifx and it's better but still annoying
and so many different versions so the support is spread out in specialty
Where did you download mame that this worked?
Super Gussun Oyoyo and Elevator Action Returns.
stick with nebula then
runs CPS1, CPS2, and neo geo. All I'll ever need.
Not that guy, but downloading SHUMPMAME from SHMUP general on /vg/ is one of the places.
>Elevator Action Returns
youtu.be
That game is my shit.
>runs CPS1, CPS2, and neo geo. All I'll ever need.
Shit, will do. thx.
What version of mame should I download if I want to run the gradius/parodius games?
Tried to run Sexy Parodius a few months ago and I just couldn't fucking get it to work after hours of pulling teeth. Maybe I just had the wrong version.
I've actually never played the original, probably should since its such a classic, but I saw some gameplay of Elevator Action Returns that looked really fun so I decided to give it a try.
This mentality is retarded, someone can't prefer things that are simple and not convoluted because of "adhd xDDD" non-argument?
the only thing I have trouble with is determining how to find and load a single game and its corresponding bios or other necessary binaries, like holy fuck is it a nightmare first wrapping your head around the idea of a complete "romset" or a big MESS or whatever it is, then you realize that you don't actually need that if you know exactly which version of the game you're looking for and which bios it needs and which other roms it might inherit from, then you might use something like retroarch to try and simplify it but you've got like 8 different "current" builds available for different cores and they all handle differently... ok it's all a bit convoluted
Most emulators:
>Download ROM
>Play game
MAME:
>Download .zip and other files if needed
>Put them in MAME
>Play game
It really isn't that tricky
It's the "I use dark humor to deal with difficult situations" of software/gaming.
somehow wanting ease of use, especially when most other emulators have that, makes us dumb
It's the way the ancients said 'meme'
On my raspberry pi3 one of the mame emulators works and the other doesn't. Just gotta play around with it. Good thing is emulators keep the filthy casuals out
you're forgetting the step where the game doesn't run and you need to download extra shit and tweak some settings and then not remembering how you did it so next time you set up mame it'll be another mess to deal with.
>It really isn't that tricky
It is, though. I downloaded all files needed to play AvP, and opened mame, and i could not boot AvP. Standard MAME has some of the worst UI I've ever seen.
Actually incredibly true, on average.
>Want to play a modified rom
>Haha nope. That game has missing chd images :^).
>It works in Debug mode but runs slow
Can I just play my game please?
Thanks.
No problem. That link is regularly posted on /vg/ SHMUP general if you'd need it in the future.
Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator
MAME is amazing for it's capabilities, but I don't want to have to learn coding to run a fucking emulator
Having to set up MAME for netplay with a friend is the biggest nightmare that I don't even want to do it anymore.
The one's in red don't work at the moment
>Having to set up MAME for netplay with a friend is the biggest nightmare that I don't even want to do it anymore.
NIGGA....I theorized the idea with my friend who was trying to help me set up mame, who is a coder for bank security apps. We laughed and then dismissed the idea.
>put roms in roms folder
>run MAMEui64 or Shmupmameui64_v42
>wait 2 minutes for the roms list to refresh
Wow that was hard.
Hey I think there's a PC version of Area 51. From my knowledge, it's arcade perfect except the fact you can't activate the easter egg that lets you play as an alien. If you can't get the arcade version working, there's bound to be an iso of that.
>netplay client requires particular MAME version
>game is not compatible with that version
>same game was ported to Steam
>Steam version has no netplay
no mames guey
Obviously a lot of other computer literate people in this thread are having issues as well. MAME has issues, guy.
you just download a bios pack and the games you want, and throw them in the rom folder.
everything works easy a pie.
the only issue that you'll run into is that mame team likes to change rom sets and bios files, so some sites have the wrong downloads.
Simply put, MAME devs are elitists and pride themselves on 100% accuracy over getting the game to perform well. If they discover another way to make the emulation even more accurate, even if it completely changes how the files are loaded and screws over everyone who did it the old way, they will take it.
isn't linux the linux of gaming..
In that case find other roms or if that fails, find an older version of mame that works with the roms you have.
No Linux is the Dark Souls of Operating Systems
MAME's a nightmare? Since when?
did they fuck something up recently? i know sometimes when i get a new version it gets annoyed with my version of the neogeo bios but I haven't had problems anywhere else.
Why does anyone have to do this fucking easter egg hunt for games to work properly
...
Fuck that, why is Basilisk II / Sheepshaver so ungodly impossible to setup?
You know what, I'm gonna spoonfeed everyone in this thread just so that they can see how ungodly and awful it is to try and emulate Mac OS 7.5.3 powerfully without your brain shitting the bed.
>FOLLOW THIS GUIDE LIKE THE BIBLE
emaculation.com
>Basilisk II itself. You should probably start with the release from February 20, 2015. Be sure to first download the 15-01-2010 build so that you have a complete package.
>Basilisk II requires SDL 1.2 Libraries (just extract and put the file SDL.dll in the directory containing Basilisk II) and a GTK +2 Runtime (install before you begin). Note: The GTK version supplied here is recommended. Newer versions (available on the official site) may not work.
>You will need a valid ROM file. You can get this from your old Macintosh computer as described here, or you can skulk around on the Internet and download one illegally. ROMs from Quadra and Performa machines work best.
>HFVExplorer, a utility that allows you to read Macintosh disk images in Windows.
>A System 7 Boot Disk. Extract this to your Basilisk II directory before you begin.
>The System 7.5.3 software, which is available from Apple as a free download. Download these files to a single directory in Windows
Imagine trying to setup this shit without access to OS X or a disk drive.
>Trying to get disk1.dsk of 3 to boot
AH HAHAHAHA good luck with that.
Good shit.
I've thought about trying a 1CC on this.
What version are you running? I've been considering getting into MAME, but I've been hearing a lot of "just use an older version"
with mame use a gui version or just grab current
Think mine is on version 1.4.0?
for some reason gauntlet dark legacy doesn't seem to work despite having both the right rom set & CHD files
>for some reason gauntlet dark legacy doesn't seem to work despite having both the right rom set & CHD files
There's always something wrong with any version of MAME, isn't there
It's a rather apt(!) description.
>People that have never used Linux.
night lads have fun with metal slug 2
It's not. Get the GUI version.
What? Retroarch makes it much easier to set up. Just grab the whole bios pack from the wiki and you're done.
You got a link?
I'm helping my brother set up an arcade cab for his kids, and I would really appreciate links to useful resources/guides/whatever.
Wanting it doesn't make you dumb.
Not being able to get past a relatively small barrier to get your emulation running makes you lazy at best.
This is like someone not being able to get past the panda manually so they can only do it by installing some addon.
Sure the quick addon is a better solution, but if it didn't exist, you'd still do the manual directions, right? It's not like you need to figure it out, there's a guide right there.
I thank you, user.
