Pointless due to the Sphere Grid. Why have a character play catchup to everyone else, when you can have other characters be actually good at their roles? He's only useful as a thief before you get Rikku, after which she outclasses him skill-wise and Overdrive-wise. He's only useful to unlock Ultima, so you can give it to Lulu.

He's not that bad when you take as much advantage as you can of him being a blue mage, but even then he'll eventually fall down, but he's not that horrible either

How to fix Kimahri:
>have everyone else's areas END at the center instead of starting there

>block other characters' areas off with something higher than lvl1 key sphere so he doesn't get out of hand immediately

Done! Kimahri now scales properly with everyone else for a good portion of the game, tapers off a bit until you get Lvl3 or Lvl4 key sphere (depends on design choice), then skyrockets in usefulness because he becomes a more powerful version of someone else. Imagine Kimahri running around with Holy, -agas, or Quick Hit when those respective characters are a solid 15-20 levels away.

Blue Mages are always fucking useless

His gimmick is that he's supposed to be a jack of all trades.

His problem is threefold:
1. Despite being a jack, there's other characters that do the same job better. Riku, Yuna's Aeons come to mind at first, and then anyone once you get access to crafting higher end weapon abilities.
2. Character switching mid battle means that he's doubly useless. Why switch out to a generalist when you can switch to any of your specialists to handle a problem?
3. Lancet and blue magic, as already discussed is poorly implemented due to being locked to overdrives, and even then isn't that good.
