It's so fucking cheesy that it's amazing. It's the "1-up girl" of Sonic to me.

I've listened to his theme 5 times and holy shit I still love that intro.

Shadow had the appearance of edge, but outside of the intro and a moment here and there (killing Eggman, for instance) didn't really do anything at all.
It was mostly just another Sonic game, except with a projectile attack and the word "damn" being said a lot.

Its still being written by the guy who's been writing since Colors. It might very well be a parody.

It hasn't been this edgy since 2006. Since then there have been moments of edge, but generally Sonic Team tried to go for a more Saturday morning cartoon approach, with varied success. Why they're going back to a darker tone is beyond me. I just want to know what IIzuka's endgame here is.

Probably the closest to this lately has been Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic '06, every since then as mostly been goofy and lighthearted. The fanbase, on the other hand...Jesus.

Most people are suspecting that this is Sega basically rolling all the edgy donutsteels into one character and making him as laughably edgy as possible.

Sure, but it wasn't even close to as edgy as '06 though. It got about as dark as your average Disney movie. Honestly, it was just about right tonally speaking.

Meme man says you can make something close to coldsteel.

It lines up with Shadow The Hedgehog from 2005 and Sonic '06, but otherwise not really. The rest of the 3D games that came before Colors in '09 or so tried to go for something like a cheesy action movie, and the ones that have come since Colors they've tried to be really silly and that's about it.

Personally I wish they could go for something like Adventure and Unleashed, or catch the lightning in a bottle of Adventure 2's total cheese, but I find over the edge to at least be more amusing in its badness than 90% of what the post-Colors games have to offer.

What, you mean SatAM? Of course I'm aware of it. I was strictly talking about the games for the sake of simplicity since that user was curious.

I never said I enjoyed stories from the likes of Colors or Lost World. But the real problem with those stories wasn't the tone, it was the overall awful writing. Something like Unleashed had the right tone. It could be serious but also light hearted. The writing wasn't great, but it was serviceable. My point here is going to either extreme never yields great results. Sure, the edgy shit is amusing for now, but how would you feel after a few games of it? Because that's basically what happened in the 2000's and people got sick of it by the time ShadowTH rolled around and then '06 crashed everything with no survivors.

I'm just wondering what Iizuka has planned in the long term, or if he's just doing what he usually does which is throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.
