The top, trying to replicate the flatness of 2D animation?
Or the bottom, a more 3D and "lifelike" approach?

Arcsys put in fucktons of work to make it look good, and they had to do a lot of tricks for it to work as it does. From what I understand the texture work looks like absolute shit outside of the specific lighting they use.

Kinda of true, they don't look terrible, but it looks like just a standard 3d model. All the shading is done through UE3's lighting engine on each individual stage.

They both look flat though.

The one that isn't already fucking dead.

The top only looks good if you go full autism with it like guilty gear
