Yes, multiplayer games have always been more popular, simply because they are multiplayer. Of course there are single player games that sold 10 times more than some MP ones, but the simple concept of MP and playing with friends is more popular than playing by yourself. Don't you remember how the most important thing for consolecucks was to be able to couch coop with friends on a MP game? Do you realise the HUGE amount of people that by one game a year, play it 10 hours total, and because of that will chose a multiplayer one?
Hell this is why singleplayer games started adding broken and unfinished multiplayer elements just to boost sales, because people love MP, just look at soulsborne games.

If you're playing a game of rock paper scissors against like 99% of people it's just going to be a game of chance but for a select group of people it's their life and they actually do play at a level requiring skill.
