Old wrpgs were a force to be reckoned with. Newer shit lacks the soul that the older games had. And let's face it, the hollywoodization of the genre ruined it for good.

No longer are we free from political agenda in a fucking video game, it is the core driving force most of the western game devs, and as such, leads to very poor mechanics and even worse story telling.

jrpgs are weird in that you don't have a blank slate character whom you can customize like traditional rpgs. the roles that exist are predetermined by characters and you unlikely can't change them. the closest to role playing would be picking and choosing which character (role) you want in your party.

What are you even talking about? Most JRPGs are split between either party based systems or job/class systems with job/class systems also having the sub-system styles of weapon based class systems for games where you don't get a party.

From a purely mechanical stand point most JRPGs actually let you do more as a player than WRPGs.

Well at the time Western RPGs were things like converted D&D to computer form, and could be rather complex. As a whole WRPGs have really shifted from that towards a simpler state.

Reminder: WRPGfags need to stop pretending they know moon. The interview was about people not being able to play things like D&D and other pen and paper RPGs easily. DQ predates the vast majority of WRPG franchises and even the ones that do predate DQ didn't arrive in Japan until after DQ even existed.

In terms of choice&consequence mechanics, sure, but there are a few JRPGs I consider to be better overall, like Suikoden, Arc the Lad II or even Chrono Trigger.

New Vegas was the WRPG I mentioned dongus, DaS was my example for a recent good JRPG.
