So user, what kinda HDD are you using for your PS2 and what games you got loaded up?
I'm looking to purchase a 1TB drive since I've already filled my 160GB.

Also, general PS2 thread I guess.
Pretty sure you can only use the 160 gig because the PS2 won't see a larger size? It's been awhile since I hacked mine
Nah, you can use 1TB drives.
Many of my mates do the same, I just nabbed this drive out of one of my PS3s.
Hopefully I can fit an entire game library on a 1TB but not too sure.
I would love to have my fatty hacked but seems pretty hard to fin a modem this days, also do you guy have any guide to help in the hacking process?
Dude its totally easy. This video helped me out:
youtu.be
All you need is a FreeMcBoot card, the network adapter shown in the video, a drive and thats it.
Can I plug in a PS2 to a computer monitor?
Sure you can, just use a converter of some kind.
I did it with my N64 once, so it should be able to work with a PS2.
Though I connect my PS2 to my capture card that is then connected to my PC.
got a 750 gb ide in mine, only used up about 100gb so far. Currently using it to play Yakuza 1/2, dead to rights, dark cloud 2, grimgrimoire and other stuff long overdue on my backlog.
Nice. How comes you're using an IDE drive? The network adapter I got supports SATA but I guess whatever works.
I just need more HDD space.
I read some iffy things about using a gamestar network adapter with SATA connector, things like games not loading correctly (or not loading at all) using sata+gamestar adapter but works with ide and Sony's adapter. It could be just myths but I didn't feel like testing it myself. I'm guessing there's no problems with using SATA in your experience?
If my ide hdd breaks then I would like to buy one of those separate SATA connectors for the network adapter though as finding large capacity ide drives might be a pain one day.
Not him but I ordered this thing last week. Hasn't arrived yet tho.
The cheap adapters don't have a functional network port.
Yeah it all works fine. Never had a problem with it.
A Maxtor 250GB HDD. It's pretty much full.
PCSX2 > hardware
thx, i just need to find a modem
Check the one in the video I posted above, I followed his video and got mine shipped in less than two weeks.
I sometimes use that, most games run fine and I have a GTX 1080 and i7 6700K.
>I sometimes use that, most games run fine and I have a GTX 1080 and i7 6700K.
you can easily upscale your games to 1080p with that hardware.
Oh I know but when it comes to recording or streaming. Its just nicer to use the OG hardware but if I am in a pinch then emulation is fine.
where do i go to get a pre modded ps2/ps3 with decent space within a price range of 225
why though? you're just playing hacky versions of the games, not even the actual way they should play. if you're playing ps2 on anything but real hardware on a CRT you're not experiencing the system as intended.
I burn discs instead because i don't want that many games and its cheaper
You don't pre modded PS2s on eBay or anything. You buy the console and a FreeMcBoot memory card.
Oh im dumb i dint realized he posted links to that thank you dude
PCSX2 has some nice features but some games run like shit even in high end Pcs, so stop shitposting please
No worries man, I love the PS2 and the HDD way is the best.
Not directly.
You need something like this:
amazon.com
There are many variants that basically convert anything PS2 or other old analog signal source spits out from composite, through s-video to component (best analog video quality) and output it through VGA / DVI / HDMI.
Can't you just use the USB ports on the ps2?
autism
just use pcsx2
They are not worth it, USB 1.1 they are and the slowest. Burned disks are faster than the USB.
man i remember having to get freemcboot onto my memory card by beating the first level of the shittiest 007 game in existence, then at the perfect time before the voiceover starts telling you about the 2nd level, jam a cut up creditcard into the underside of the disk drive, move the locking pin over to the side, then put in my freemcboot disk, close it, re-engage the pin, all before the text finished in game. mustve taken me like 10 tries.
and now youre telling me they just sell the cards all ready to go. fuck me
Already use both, thanks bud.
You absolutely can, but ps2 has USB 1.1 ports so loading times are really long and FMV's won't play without serious stuttering and pausing.
Dude that sounds horrible. Feel sorry for you man. Tons of people sell FreeMcBoot cards on eBay. Super easy and cheap.
>stop using what works
>use this crappy glitchy imitation that requires magnitudes bigger investment and gives frustration in return
>but hey if it happens to work (for some small amount of 'work') you can switch to 4K
>FUCK YEAH PCMR ALWAYS WINS
autism indeed
I have a physical collection so I've no need of one. Any games that are just fuck-retarded in price for no good reason I just emulate like Rule of Rose (it's a pretty average game to be honest)
Those were the early days, when you had to infect yourself. Now it's spread like aids, and anybody selling memory cards will include it for free
they didnt in 2010. or atleast noone near me. wouldve had to pay out the ass for shipping overseas. and i was a kid with no job. it was a good way to kill an afternoon.
honestly it was one of the hardest vidya related feats ive ever performed. and i was rewarded with infinite games. well worth the struggle.
I remember having to cram a hole on my PS2 slim to keep the disc tray open so I could use my swap magic disc before I found out about FMCB. Fun times. Just remembered I still have my fat PS2 laying around so now I'm tempted to try HDD loading.
>I have a physical collection so I've no need of one.
Putting a HD in your PS2 saves wear and tear on both your PS2 drive, and collection of games. Also a bunch of games load faster.
OP here. I shall be off, gotta continue my stream of God Hand. You dudes hava hood one and hopefully this thread wont just die when I am done.
make sure you got a fatty with a modem extension before you go wasting your moneys
If I was worried about that user I'd emulate full time and not even bother with a physical PS2.
Can't you just grab a $5 IDE/SATA adapter, some short IDE extensions, and toss a laptop HD into the HD hole? No need to mod an adapter?
>Putting a HD in your PS2 saves wear and tear on both your PS2 drive, and collection of games. Also a bunch of games load faster.
while this is true, ive also found certain games that seem to have copy protection and will freeze up when loaded onto the drive. FFXII was one of these. every time a cinematic came up you had to skip it super fast or the game would freeze. although im now realizing i probably have an extremely old version of freemcboot as i installed it in 2010. does anyone know if they addressed this problem?
...
Are you doing anything else with your old 40GB IDE HDs? Even without piracy there are a few benefits from just sticking one in your PS2.
That I don't know. Might work or not.
But with a extra adapter inside the drive slot, ps2 loses the ability to use full sized HDDs since they won't no longer fit.
20 brit bucks is a small price to pay for a upgrade where you don't even have to solder anything.
>Even without piracy there are a few benefits from just sticking one in your PS2
Like what?
PS2 hacking really isn't worth the effort.
>games still stutter even when loaded from a phat's internal HDD
No thanks. Let me know when I can actually play games without suttering FMVs or audio. Also, there are many games that hang if you try to load them with OPL.
>using a network adapter
>have to leave your PC on to stream games to your PS2
Fuck no
>just burn backup discs
1.) You HAVE to purchase expensive brands of media, like Taiyo Yuden. The PS2's laser assembly does a shit job of trying to read any other disc, assuming you don't just get a DRE. Given the current market value of PS2 games, you can buy used games cheaper than paying for brand-name DVD+R discs.
2.) 90% of the disc images you can find online aren't worth a shit. These underage faggots who rip ISOs and upload them to emuparadise or whatever other shitty sites haven't been nuked by DMCA notices don't know what they're doing. You just end up wasting expensive media on shitty rips that have a snowball's chance in hell of working.
for one, your ps2 becomes heavier. and has a brick sticking out the back.
How easy is it to hack a PS2?
Do you need to buy 3rd party shit or can you just softmod?
still lighter than og xbox
...
Forgot to mention, have a slim.
buy memorycard with free mcboot or make one yourself if you've 007 agent under fire. maybe other games that you could use, but that's the most known one.
forget to mention but if i remember right it doesn't work on 9000 model slims or something.
It'd be worth the effort if you could just rip the game from the disc straight to the HDD.
>These underage faggots who rip ISOs and upload them to emuparadise or whatever other shitty sites haven't been nuked by DMCA notices don't know what they're doing. You just end up wasting expensive media on shitty rips that have a snowball's chance in hell of working.
What? I upload/post stuff to Emuparadise. It's half impossible to rip PS2 games that aren't Redump matching.
Can't the entire PS2 library fit on a 160GB drice?
do i need a HDD i have money to buy one not a 200 dollar one but 60 80 is a nice price
because i wanna play soul calibur 3 again
FMCB works on those, but ESR does not. You can use FMCB to swap discs, which is stupid, but an option
No, considering that each game is 2-4GB average.
it's not crappy but just getting a ps2 is better
I just have a memory card with FMCB and DVDs, it works. The HDD is more convenient though.
Yes. But not all at once. Jesus fucking christ, some games are as big as ~8GB, and there's well over a thousand PS2 games
Your laser can start feeling it eventually. Though it's not like its particularly tough to replace.
Yeah that's true too.
thats a meme reason to downplay emulation.
Some people just prefer to play on the original hardware. If you like to emulate everything that's fine.
is there any guides for hacking a ps2
>using anything faster than a 5400 RPM hard drive
enjoy your baked PS2 you stupid fucks
Recently dusted off my old ps2 at my mom's parents for my dad to use for backstreet billiards. It had been a decade since I've used it. At least Ibe been playing meme games before the internet told me about them.
Some 320GB IDE 3.5" drive but but I have a 750GB SATA 2.5" sitting around and I've been wondering if I can get some kind of adaptor.
>emulation is perfect
>toss a laptop HDD in
>why play a game in 1080p when you can play it in 480p with scanlines
are non-Sony network adapters any good? they seem cheaper than a used OEM piece where I live?
A lot of games have heavy graphical glitches when you emulate in hardware mode. It's getting better, but it's still a hell of a lot cheaper to get a PS2 from a flea market than to get a PC with a CPU and GPU powerful enough to emulate at full speed with graphical improvements.
Because it runs correctly.
I'm not underage or a poorfag so I just burn discs.
>I'm not a poorfag so I pirate games
>I'm not underage so I do things the retard way
Congrats on making the stupidest sentence possible in 10 words.
>"Only poorfags wouldn't want to piss away money on 15 year old discs when you can make them yourself for like 30 cents each!"
>"All my 17 year old friends at /r/pcmasterrace said consoles suck and emulation is better!"
Nah, take a long walk off a short pier my high school friend.
not him, but burning discs is still a useful way of playing on PS2 hardware, because slimline consoles
I agree, but it's stupid to pretend it's better than using a HDD in a fatty.
no way dude. you gotta use discs to have the authentic experience
My current drive in my PS2 is a 10_ GB drive with 1_ games on it, whereas my Xbox drive is 160 GB, I can't be arsed starting it up and seeing how many games I have on it.
I don't know where to get IDE drives these days.
needs upscaling
>What? I upload/post stuff to Emuparadise. It's half impossible to rip PS2 games that aren't Redump matching.
Doubtful. Most of the rips I've tried simply don't work, or they stutter to hell and back because of misaligned data sectors, especially with sensitive data like audio tracks and FMVs. No, I'm not burning them the wrong way. No, there's nothing wrong with my burner. This has been the case for years across multiple desktops I've built.
PS2 hacking isn't worth the effort. And unfortunately, this holds true with most other consoles that load data through optical devices. It's even harder to find solid PS1 rips. I burn through an average of 4 or 5 Taiyo Yuden discs before I finally download a rip that isn't shit.
look on Ebay, there should be plenty of them from old office PCs
A hard drive for my PS2 is still a future purchase. I know a guy who can fix my laser if it ever goes out, so that is not super important.
They fixed Ratchet & Clank now. Check the prior update.
This HDD shit is annoying and overkill.
Can I just burn CDs and use them on a regular PS2 Slim?
bumping
Not sure what you guys are talking about. Free McBoot works on my 9000 slim. I load games from a USB device, and burned discs through OPL. USB loading works, but FMVs lag to hell and back. Games with FMVs that are small filesizes (e.g. CD-based games) usually don't have any FMV stutter, but that's very select few games.
>CDs
No, but you can use DVDs if you get FreeMCBoot + ESR
Apparently burned DVDs wear out the laser faster.
...
Yes they are. I posted the one I am using in a video link somewhere above.
I'd offer to send any anons a Free McBoot mem card if there were a way to set up communications. Of course, you'd have to send me a memory card to be modded, assuming you trust me not to keep the card for myself. I wouldn't charge for return shipping.
