Do you like tank controls?

Do you like tank controls?

I don't mind it. Its a deal breaker for some right?

Perfect for fixed camera.

I don't miss it

no, first person cam angle and controls all the way

Revelations 2 has the most accurate and perfect "tank controls" ever

Yes

Nobody "likes" tank controls. However, for a game like Resident Evil, it can help the player's experience in regards to tension since mastering the controls is needed to be effective and efficient.

I hated it the first time I ever played a game with those controls. Then I got used to them and they're really not as bad as people like to make it seem.

They used to be a necessity that became pretty much obsolete.
I never minded them and I certainly do not miss them, but it's fun seeing underage whine about them.

Tank controls were the scariest thing about RE1

Brilliant

I want pre-rendered backgrounds back. Why can't indies do that instead of pixel shit?

I don't hate them.
It all depends on how they're implemented.
My favourite tank controls were in Tomb Raider though.
In fact, Tomb Raider's controls in general are absolutely sublime. So much precision.

Yes, i do

it takes talent. Good pixel art also takes talent, but you can't make bad pre-render backgrounds and call them "charming"

If it interferes with gameplay (Tenchu on PS1), have to use a D-Pad (First RE games and Dino Crisis), or the camera isn't designed properly for it I hate it. If it has none of these, then I've got no problem with tank controls.

I hate them

yes.

>have to use a D-Pad
Nigga what? The tank controls are liteally MADE for the D-pad + Arrow-keys/WASD.

Onimusha 3 did it right.
>tank controls on d-pad
>3d controls on analog stick

I think they work really well with fixed cameras and I think that we don't have enough fixed camera games nowadays. Short answer: Yes

No, and I find it hard to believe that anyone actually does like them

In REmake, the updated controls are straight up better, an improvement, and sadly break the game cause it's just not balanced around having a character that isn't a crippled dummy

>Tank controls on an analogue stick.
That's fucking imprecise.
Why would you want that?

still tank controls in REmake

>That's fucking imprecise.
what about pic related? probably the only game that did first person platforming good, and it has tank controls

He probably means the HD port.

I don't have a problem with them

The free controls for fixed camera are fucking shit.

I've only played the Wii Trilogy and I don't recall that having tank controls. Just the standard "strafing mapped to left and right on the main analogue stick" movement with turning handled by looking left and right.

I don't like them on their own, they take a while to get used to and can be frustrating sometimes even once you do. I do like a lot of games that use tank controls though, being the best example. Chances are that had the devs gone for an easier control scheme, the game wouldn't have the emphasis on challenging crowd control it currently has. And I'd rather deal with some minor discomfort when learning a game than miss out on a great, unique style of game.

Because it usually means using the fucking awful dualshock D-Pad which gives me RSI.

GC version had tank controls

Tank controls are perfect for

>fixed camera angles
>an actual tank

LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE

>Because it usually means using the fucking awful dualshock D-Pad which gives me RSI.
That's a very good reason. Sony D-Pads are pretty shit in general with the exception of the Vita.

They were shit in DMC 1.

No idea why Capcom thought it'd be better this time.

What did Eternal Darkness use?
That was pretty awesome

I don't remember 1 having tank controls, I remember it controlling like your average 3D game

When I'm remote controlling a giant mecha that transforms into a tank from hundreds of feet away?

Yep.

Yeah DMC1 doesn't have tank controls. The game literally wouldn't work if it had them

>Tank controls are perfect for
>fixed camera angles
This. There is no better control scheme for games with fixed camera angles. For everything else tank controls are clunky at best and broken at worst.

Was talking about 3D controls with fixed camera

Read the guy I replied to

Who thought this camera was a good idea.

Casual!

So how would you guys make a game like god hand?

Oh well nevermind then. I still disagree with you though

Absolutely.

During the jump to 3D, people realized that creating real-time environments was too taxing on gen5 consoles. Then came the idea to use pre-rendered backgrounds and only general the character models. This technique allows games such as FF7 to exist, which still look absolutely amazing even today.

The thing is, for pre-rendered graphics to work, the camera viewpoint has to be fixed. This + the general lack of trial-and-error at this point in the industry meant tank controls were the first intuitive control scheme for 3D games.

It was only later that it became evident that thumbsticks were the way to go. The PS1 had the Dual-Stick controller and the original Dualshock models and the Saturn had the 3D Pad, which originally spawned the Dreamcast -> Xbox Duke -> Xbox S style controller family we still have today.

Someone actually had to invent the idea of Left Thumbsticks controlling Forward/Back/Strafing and Right Thumbsticks controlling Pitch and Turn.

I'd make it not be shit, for one.

I love them, they're more immersive.

Yeah. Fucking loved to play REmake with WASD instead of a DPad this time around.
