Should I just hack a Wii, or mod my old Gamecube?
Have the GC but no Wii or WiiU.
GC emulation isn't good enough on PC.

GC emulation isn't good enough on PC.
Believe it or not, but a Gamecube is more expensive than a Wii these days.
A gamecube box is 3 times as expensive than a wii boxed.
mosty because of controller value
I'd say hack a wii.
Can I get an external HDD working with the GC? That's the deal breaker from what I'm googling, is that booting ISO's off of a Wii is a shitload easier than with GC.
Fuck memory cards.
If the Gamecube has a digital AV out, mod it for both game loading and an HDMI mod.
If it doesn't or you don't care about stuff like that, then just hack a Wii. Much easier and more convenient.
no point in having a gamecube when the wii exists
>no point in having a gamecube when the wii exists
I've literally never even used a Wii. Gamecube was the last console I ever bought (at the end of it's generation)
Is GC on a Wii emulation, or native hardware? What about WiiU?
Basically backwards compatible. You can insert gamecube games, and it'll read and start gamecube emulation.
Wii is an overclocked gamecube.
I thought Wii U was an overclocked Wii...
... with hacks is Wii U native as well?
I might just get a Wii U. Three libraries, then Emulators for N64 and prior, right?
Native hardware. Homebrew is extremely easy to set up and the hardest thing about it is having to install virtual console games one by one. Playing gc games is as easy as dragging nintendont to the apps folder and renaming gc isos to game.
Yes but it cant play gamecube games. it plays wii only
Wii u is very different from Wii, but can play Wii games natively using the secondary cpu. The Wii u is also capable of GameCube emulation.
Wii and GC can play GC natively, the Wii U can't.
>The Wii u is also capable of GameCube emulation
um no its not
Google says a firmware hack flips Gamecube back on for Wii U. It's disabled in firmware/software on the Wii U because reasons.
So Wii-U is EMULATION when hacked to allow Gamecube games?
NATIVE HARDWARE is #1 priority for me. So the Wii is the newest hardware I could buy?
Just as well. The original Wii is so fucking cheap people are practically giving them away.
Bullshit, you can install the Homebrew Channel on Wii U with the virtual Wii then install Nintendont to play Gamecube. Wii U is basically three consoles in one.
through hacks it can play gamecube games natively, and hacking a wii u is easy (as long as you didnt get the recent update 5.5.2)
Yeah it is
Check out nintendont for the Wii U
But is it emulation, or native?
I can't find a straight answer on google for Nntendont.
If native hardware is what you want, get a Wii and hack it. You can play Wii backups with USBLoaderGX and Gamecube backups with Nintendont. Both run on the system's native hardware.
It's running from the virtual Wii so it would be native-emulation in that order. Or Native-Native since the Virtual Wii is also native? I'm not sure.
The only thing I can tell you is it works pretty alright, even with a PS4 controller.
>"Nintendont is obviously not a modification of the MIOS, like DIOS MIOS (lite), because the vWii does not have a MIOS. It is neither an emulator, because the Wii or vWii are not powerful enough to emulate GameCube games. Nintendont is more like a bridge between an emulator and a virtual machine which runs Gamecube games natively."
essentially, it's as native as you can get
>Backups
>Not ROMs
Scared the vidya police will get you, user?
There's a whole bunch of misinformation ITT from what I glanced.
OP, listen to me. You can technically hack a Gamecube, but it's probably easier to just buy and hack a Wii or Wii U. If you hack a Wii U, you'll be able to get free Wii U games, free Wii games, and free Gamecube games. The Gamecube compatibility is not emulation technically, but the Wii U wasn't supposed to play Gamecube by design neither. Nintendon't (the homebrew that allows GC backwards compatibility) is more of a compatibility layer than just straight up emulation, since the Wii U is essentially running the same hardware as a Wii/GC, just a tad bit stronger. Nintendon't runs GC games pretty much perfectly, and you can use the GC controller adapter that was made for Smash 4 to use Gamecube controllers for Nintendon't. If you don't have the adapter (or would just prefer not to use GC controllers), you can use pretty much any USB controller like a Dualshock 3 or Dualshock 4. Or, you can use a Wii U Pro controller.
>GC emulation isn't good enough on PC.
dolphin might be the best emulator, by far
OP if you're gonna follow any advice in this thread follow this post, he's spot on
The wii is as open as a hooker, super easy to install homebrew channel and play mario land on gameboy emulator.
Fuck me, alright then.
A Wii bundle with controllers is like 40$.
A Wii-U bundle with controllers is like 150$.
> pretty much any USB controller
I kind of want to tempt divine wrath and see if I can't run FZERO with a steam controller native on nintendo hardware.
>probably easier to just buy and hack a Wii
HDD?
HDD.
Memory cards are a crapshoot, and booting ISO's directly is the way god intended. If a Wii is 40$, it's 40$ for a fucking HDD adapter + modchip for GC.
It is hands down the best emulator in existance, but I'm not upgrading my PC until maybe next year. I'm not dropping 800-1000$ just because I got an itch.
Sadly, N64 emulation STILL SUCKS ASS 18 FUCKING YEARS LATER
and on top of that, N64's FZERO-X+DD Expansion was the best FZERO.
OP do what said. This guy is smart, but if you want to play melee, use a Wii or Gamecube. The Wii U GC adapters have a bit of input lag
>Sadly, N64 emulation STILL SUCKS ASS 18 FUCKING YEARS LATER
Even nintendo gave up on n64 on virtual console
FUCK
The FZERO-X-DD ROM hack won't run, will it?
I'd kill to play FZERO-X-DD on a real console without spending 800$ importing extremely rare hardware.
Go take a look at WiiU exclusives, if there's enough that interest you spend the extra $110, if not, just get the Wii. You can play online with them if you install them directly to the harddrive.
>It is hands down the best emulator in existance, but I'm not upgrading my PC until maybe next year. I'm not dropping 800-1000$ just because I got an itch.
my laptop does solid 25 fps in metroid prime
i5 2520m
Samefag here.
About N64. You can try a few things to play N64 games. Granted, N64 emulation is shit, even on PC. So be warned that these methods aren't 100% perfect. You can either do Virtual Console injects, or use an emulator like Not 64. Each method has different games that work with it. Some games don't work with either method.
>implying an i5 mobile is anemic
OP here,
TOP KEK get on my level
I'm running K10 architecture still. It's still got a few years in it. Runs Witcher 3 and Dark Souls 3 fine, probably the last PC game I'll bother with until Bannerlord is out.
There are only like 5 games worth paying for nintendo 64. Rest are shovelware or multiplat.
>Sadly, N64 emulation STILL SUCKS ASS 18 FUCKING YEARS LATER
I really don't get it. Even PS1 and PS2 have a more solid emulation than N64. Whatever Nintendo did to build the N64 was by far the best piracy protection that any company has ever implemented. If it wasn't for that, the inevitable N64 Mini would be worthless.
>GC emulation isn't good enough on PC.
For what I understand, modding a GC is harder than hacking a Wii also, if you hack a Wii you will get access to the entire Nintendo consoles library except for the N64 and Wii U, also you will get access to third party VC games and emulators.
>GC emulation isn't good enough on PC
How?
The n64 mini will be worthless user. NES mini got 30 games, SNES mini only 21, I expect the n64 have even less and all of them will be VC games that you can get on your Wii or Wii U.
>N64 emulation is shit after 18 years
What the fuck? The first time I played Ocarina of Time was on Project64 in 2010 Because parents never got me a nintendo console back in the day with a 1gb Ram 64Vram Intel Centrino Duo laptop and everything played just fine.
SM64
OoT
MM
StarFox 64
G 007
Perfect Dark
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Super Smash Bros
Paper Mario
F Zero X
and I'm sure there's at least 5 more im gonna get fucked for not metioning.
>lastly, as if PS1 or any other console that gen wasnt the same thing. PS1 had WAY more shovelware
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug
N64 emulation projects CANT FUCKING GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER. It pisses me off. Project64 was like 85% of the way there before the post-1.6 bullshit. Mupen64 still stuffers from the same disease every open/linux development project does.
Saturn Emulation is better is a fucking less developed state. It's pathetic.
Brand new Wii-U + New Controllers + Retail Games Bought From Store
The PS1 had more shovelware, obviously, just by virtue of having more games total, period. The PS1 also had more good games as well. The N64 has one of the tiniest libraries of all time. Since the library is so small, each individual game was more memorable.
t. owned an N64 during 5th gen, and not a PS1/Saturn
Have you tried running Dolphin on your current computer? Give it a shot anyway, shit runs great even on potatoes.
That's 2 companies total right there, nintendo and rare making all the nintendo 64 games worth playing.
My potato runs Witcher 3, Dark Souls 3, etc.
Dolphin 60-75% speed.
I've tried all the tweaks and guides.
Frankly, a dedicated retro-console is just really fucking useful. I still use my hacked XBOX + emulator setup for this reason well, that, and the OG XBOX was a fucking great media machine when hacked. It's still hooked up as the media center for my shop with 1TB music + retro games + OG XBOX library.
>My potato runs Witcher 3, Dark Souls 3, etc.
>Dolphin 60-75% speed.
Probably playing those games at like 720p with 25fps.
You're full of shit.
>OG XBOX library
How much space does that take? I mean it's a lot of games, not exactly "Entire NES library in 8mb zip file" tier.
>WiiU exclusives
*crickets*
You mean the 8th, 9th, 10th remakes of the games nintendo keep churning out while neglecting better IPs they have?
Not him, but I also have a hacked Xbox Hueg with pretty much every worthwhile exclusive and a large number of multiplats (since it ran 6th gen multiplats best), and they all fit on a 250GB hard drive. Granted, I didn't have any emulation stuff or multimedia. Just Xbox games.
>Emulation is more efficient than native!
I need your dealer's number. He's slinging some really good shit apparently.
ok
See
XBOX did have good exclusives, but was mostly the superior multiplat. Everything you'll ever play is under 400GB tops. 2-5 gigs per game.
I've got more music than actual games, but I tend to download whole discographies for bands with just a few singles I actually like.
CPU requirements peaked years ago. GPU requirements are the big bottleneck.
>>Emulation is more efficient than native!
It is you mong. Tell us what settings you played those other games on to prove my point.
I miss ruining everything in software mode
>Tell us what settings you played those other games on to prove my point
>Settings
>Impacting CPU
>Not GPU
My laptop has a 720 screen.
Ran Metro 2033 & 2034 on high settings, of course.
My CPU is actually overclocked, from 1.5 Ghz to 2.8 Ghz. Yay AMD. I didn't even max out the voltage, I just can't install water cooling in a laptop.
To quote
>CPU requirements peaked years ago. GPU requirements are the big bottleneck.
>>>Emulation is more efficient than native!
>>It is more efficient to emulate!
The fuck is going on in this thread.
hack a wii. i softmodded mine and it really is a complete arcade of some of the greatest games of all time. i have wii and gamecube games on a usb hard drive, n64, snes, genesis and more virtual console titles on the system/sd card and even have an snes emulator for the titles that didn't make it to VC. and there is even more i could still put on it. i just got a sony trinitron off of craigslist, the one that does wide screen and 1080i, was $1000 when it came out. with that and the wii i have enough games to last a life time.
So you're playing on a fucking laptop. 720p. Probably sub 30fps.
Bravo retard, thanks for proving my point.
I'm talking about Dolphin compared to DS3 and TW3.
> thanks for proving my point.
Why yes, I run ALL MY GAMES IN SOFTWARE RENDERING.
I HAVE NO VIDEO CARD. WHATSOEVER. YEP.
That does indeed validate your point, me running modern games irrelevant to a video card with native DX11+ support. Yep.
Clearly, I was lying about how dolphin runs on my own hardware. For no purpose whatsoever. I was just struck with the need to make this particular thread for no reason.
Better get busy though, you've got a lot of people to correct online, saying a low end Phenom II runs like ass with Dolphin. Dunno why they'd all be compelled to lie like I did, as I had no reason either!
It's not like Dolphin relies on single threaded performance! Unlike those silly modern games built ground up for multithreaded loads. Hell, it's not like AMD literally hasn't made a CPU with good single thread performance until Ryzen.
Thanks user! You even cured my erectile dysfunction, AND made Ryzen get released.
Gents, we need do get this "Can-do" man into Space-X! Next stop, fucking Mars!
I like how you expect me to read your sperg-out. Fucking poorfags I swear.
WII IS AN OVERCLOCKED GAMECUBE, ITS NOT EMULATION
TECHNICALLY WIIU IS A OVERCLOCKED WII SO TECHNICALLY PLAYING GAMECUBE ISNT EMULATION BUT NINTENDO NEVER ALLOWED IT
SAME PROCESSOR ARCHITECTURE, SAME GPU MANUFACTURER
>poorfag
>Implying there's anything worth upgrading for
Call me when Bannerlord is already 3+ years old with mature mods.
GC emulation IS good.
>t. autist playing 720p games at 20fps ultra low settings
So is the Wii U an over-overclocked Gamecube?
They're not even roms. They're ISOs.
I never understood why people say it's incorrect to refer to isos as roms.
Isos are disc images made from pressed read-only discs, are they not? CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, BD-ROM, what have you.
is your PC an over-overclocked pentium?
QUICK! WHERE CAN I GET GAMECUBE ROMS NOW THAT EMUPARADISE HAD TO TAKE ALL NINTENDO STUFF DOWN?
Look for Redump sets.
