I want to get into Metroid

I want to get into Metroid.
Where do I start and why is the NES one so fucking hard?

Start with Zero Mission, then play Super Metroid, then play AM2R, then move onto the Prime games.

Zero Mission or Super Metroid -> Prime Games -> Fusion

Metroid is fun, but Zero Mission is better.

Metroid II isn't horrible, but it's one of the weakest links.

All Prime games are at least solid.

Don't bother with Other M.

Fusion will make you question everything you know.

Is there an official timeline I can look at to get an idea?

the timeline isn't as important as you would think

besides super metroid referencing metroid 2, there's not a whole lot of direct references between games

you can pretty much play them in any order

The Prime games should be played in order.

>Metroid II isn't horrible, but it's one of the weakest links.

Not if you play AM2R, then it's one of the strongest

You get little health pickups from enemies.

Not all of them

This is the official timeline.

The only important things are:

play the Prime games in order

play Metroid II (or AM2R) before Super Metroid

don't play Other M

Why are heels so fucking sexy!?

forgot image

I meant nes metroid.

Not all enemies give health

They aren't? They look like what happened if heels and sneakers bred and had an abomination of a baby.

You don't really have to play Metroid 2 before Super.

The intro to Super Metroid catches you up on the entire story up to that point, so you can play Super first if you want.

Zero Misson, Metroid 2, Super Metroid, Fusion and if you want, Other M after Fusion

Prime doesn't really matter for above so play em in order whenever, don't bother with Prime Hunters

I'd say it's the opposite.

The 2D games you can play in pretty much any order, but if you want to follow the Dark Samus plot you really have to play the Prime games in order

NES Metroid is hard because there's no map screen.

Play Zero Mission, it's a great remake of the original, and an example of a remake done right.

Then play Super Metroid, and then Fusion.

You can try Prime, but I'm not a huge fan because it's not Metroid to me. I saw you mention chronological order in one of the posts above, so take note that Fusion takes place after every Metroid game.

Shit taste. The first two Prime games are perfect Metroid games.

>wants to play Metroid
>posts ZSS from Smash

Something tells me you don't actually want to play Metroid and are just shitposting.

>even total newbies to the series consider ZSS as the face of the franchise

waifufaggotry ruins everything.

Just ignore the games proper OP. Go find some of the porn. That's all you'll need.

Yeah thats why I typed play em in order, I meant you dont have to play ZM, all Prime games, and then 2

AM2R is not an official game, fuck you.

You faggots need to fucking chill. I just want to catch up to play the 3DS one because I know a guy that makes amiibo cards so I don't have to pay to unlock shit.

Good games, but not Metroid.

ZM is alright to start with even though it's honestly the weakest 2D Metroid. Once you get to the ZS section you can stop playing, by then you've beaten the content the original Metroid had and the final section of the game is pretty awful so just skip it.

The asshurt of people like you fuels me.

They make the legs seem longer, the feet smaller (which again makes the legs look longer), and accentuates the ass.

These ugly yellow ZSS heels are fucking ugly though.

If you want to play casual garbage, go with Candy Crush instead.

Play ZM (this is a remake of the original), Super, and Fusion. Those games are classic Metroidvania gameplay which you can expect to see in Samus Returns.

Just like the other Nintendo games, the plot isn't heavily important, so don't worry about playing every game.

I find heels do the opposite for me. They turn me off.

They just look so painful and uncomfortable I can't help but think about pain and discomfort myself.

total bonerkiller. but that's just me.

>Metroid
>Hard
Underage, begone from this place and kindly return to Reddit posthaste.

Who gives a shit? It's a good game, that's all that matters

MZM/M1, Prime 1/2/3, MII/AM2R/SamusReturns, Super, (Other M isnt canon), Fusion. Theres your order.

Can I play these on a hacked Wii U? Are there emulators for Homebrew?

I wanna play on my TV but getting an Everdrive for all my consoles would be expensive as SHIT.

Other M is canon. Just because it's shit doesn't make it non-canon

The Star Wars prequels are canon in their series too, and they're also shit

>isolation
>interesting alien worlds
>backtracking
>secrets and powerups

They are LITERALLY
L I T E R A L L Y
Metroid games
You moronic dipshit

>why is the NES one so fucking hard?
Hardware limitations, basically.
There was no map, and with NES graphics, most rooms didn't look distinctive enough to help with navigating.
If you draw your own map on some graph paper, you're still likely to die a lot, but at least you'll know where you died.

Other M will be ignored and never referenced again, much like the prequels.

for nintendo's old NES games you were pretty much expected to have a physical map

zelda on nes came with one, and the japanese metroid manga had a shitload of maps in it

Are they?

NES, while not bad is very dated. Zero Mission is an updated remake, if you want to start with Metroid 1, start with Zero Mission. In the big picture though, continuity and story isn't a huge thing for Metroid, so you can easily leap in at any game really.

meh it's Metroid-ish, but being a 3D game instantly makes it not Metroidvania imho

Unpopular opinion here, but Other M is my personal favorite of the series, and I've played since the Super Metroid days. Honestly truly do not understand the bad rap it gets.

...

were you dropped on your head as a child

...

Why does this only happen to Metroid?
Imagine if half the Zelda fanbase believed OoT wasn't really Zelda and didn't count because it was 3D.

Because Metroid created a very distinctive genre named after itself.

Zelda games, at a fundamental level, can be identified as action RPG. Sometimes people say that another game is "Zelda-like" but it's still quite vague and not clear-cut.

The key features that identify a Metroidvania are the map design and progression structure popularized in Super Metroid, and Metroid Prime follows those principles that just as perfectly as OoT replicates aLttP's adventure.

2D platformers are a dime a dozen. Sidescrolling and shooting are not special to Metroid, just the topdown perspective was not the essence of Zelda.

Part of it is time. There was a while between Super Metroid and Prime. If Zelda had skipped directly from ALttP to Twilight, it might have gotten a more "not muh zelda" reception.

>AM2R

AM2R feels just like Zero Mission. I don't see the problem.

How is recommending AM2R bait? It's a decent fangame
