I think that if Nintendo should ever put out a live action Zelda movie, the first one out should be Skyward Sword. Despite it being a shitty game, it has one of the better stories and characterizations in the franchise.

I personally think Wind Waker is the best story in any Zelda game. SS had more cinematic cutscenes, but the events themselves and character development didn't feel like anything particularly special within the franchise.

I didn't say anything about being the best concerning SS so it's alright.

I'm just saying that SS should be the first movie out because it sets the table for the rest of the franchise moving forward and is an origin story for the Master Sword.

WW wouldn't be a good first experience for the casual moviegoer to the Zelda franchise, because it completely deconstructs the Zelda in-universe formula.

I think what matters the most is the games having enough story events and character interactions to be able to adapt those in movie form. Of course when adapting a game into a movie, you'll have to severely shorten the actual gameplay parts since they're seldom interesting in a storytelling sense. In Zelda's case, the dungeons and the random exploration done by Link alone wouldn't work well as a movie. Taking that into consideration, I think Skyward Sword would work alright by condensing the initial search for Zelda until the end of the Lanayru Mining Facility and, later on, the search for the Sacred Flames, or maybe have Groose help Link out in that part so there can be more character interactions. It would also be cool if they added the SS manga prequel to the story as a flashback when Zelda reveals the truth.

As for Wind Waker, I think it would more easily work as a movie with fewer changes because its side characters in the "getting the plot trinkets" parts are more tightly woven to the overall narrative than in SS and you have stuff like the Medli/Makar dungeons where they accompany Link. Just skip the Triforce quest though, make it so that the whole Triforce is on the Ghost Ship since that's the only interesting part of the whole ordeal that would have potential for an adaptation.

If the director is competent, they could expand Fi's role more. That's why Medli and Makar were necessary for WW Link because he had no companion inside the dungeons after he left Red Lion. Fi is with SS Link anywhere.

Thinking about it, you have a point. Wind Waker should never be the first Zelda movie adaption. It would work great as an experimental, Miyazaki-esque film, but only after the Zelda groundwork was established.

It was my sister's first Zelda and she loved the story. No need to explain the origin of everything. The intro works really well as a way of establishing some context in a very mysterious/long time gone way.

Sure, it's not a conventional Zelda setting, but it's the one that works best as a movie on its own.

Oh, I wasn't talking about WW being adapted first. The ideal order, assuming they couldn't just adapt every game, would be SS -> OoT -> WW, kinda like the Castlevania animated series has started with CV3 and will probably get to SotN later.

There's no argument about almost all Zelda games being good standalone stories.
But part of WW's shock was the departure from the reincarnation cycle due to time shenanigans.
A few films cementing the cycle in the audience's minds should be enough before breaking it.

I don't think most Zelda games have stories that can be considered interesting enough to make for good movies without SERIOUS modifications and creative licenses on the moviemakers.

I disagree wholeheartedly. The "reincarnation cycle thing" isn't something you're all that aware of during the game and surely the story isn't centered around that. It's cool to circlejerk about it with other Zelda nerds, but WW itself is about the journey of a boy who wants to save his sister, but gets involved in something way bigger than anything he would have expected.

And that's very Zelda-like.
