Okay when I saw he was voiced by Matt Mercer in English I liked him a little more but in Japanese he's so fucking bland and his plot is just boring.

That's a pretty predictable ranking. Ann and Ryuji are introduced so early in the game and quickly lose any sort of focus and attention by the halfway point of the game whereas Makoto and Yusuke are introduced by the halfway point of the game and thus remain fresher in the memories of most players by the end of this 90+ hour JRPG. Haru is the inverse of Ann and Ryuji who gets introduced far too late to even have an impact and her arc gets hijacked by Morgana.

I mean to be fair Ryuji actually is a bro, but mostly about shouldering 99% of a cat's undirected and unwarranted abuse. He doesn't really get anywhere in his own s.link, he saves the team and stops the adults from screwing it up, but you don't go anywhere with him beyond "I want to help you fuck up adults" from start to finish.


Junpei basically becomes 30 mentally by the end of his character arc, and "Daisy" Hanamura is probably post-op by the time of persona 5. That's character development, unlike this overly long post designed only to get me the six at the end of my post.

This fucking game was the blueballs of drama like I've never even known. Even Goro goes out offscreen and the party gets over it like he's Harry Fucking Kim.

The nerdy antagonist hanging out with Jesus and Evanescence in P3 gets more tearjerking than anyone in this fucking game. I don't get it, did they forget? Did p4 damage their brains so badly they literally can't do bittersweet any more?

That's valid, and he does do that. This is a relatively self-contained plot arc though, in that he doesn't bring it up anywhere except his own s.link.

So its not really a character development as much as a short pamphlet, and the real killer is that it doesn't reflect on any of his character in the rest of the game. He doesn't "learn to let go of past mistakes" in other situations, he DOES almost manage to show some development right at the end in the prison, but they miss a chance to go "Look Ryuji has learned to let go of mistakes and aim for a bright future by driving the team to free themselves" and hand the job to you, because Ryuji is a sprinter not a walker.

Compare and contrast with Junpei, who gets his own fucking sidestory about essentially becoming a man, loving and losing, and deciding what is really important between himself, his teams and his goals.

All the protags have pretty defined personalities, my guy.

Morgana should always be dead last. In a game where the majority of characters are 1 dimensional and spew the same tired shit for 70-80 hours that thing is the worst. It whines harder then any other jrpg character and thinks its the shit.

As much as i agree overall i don't agree when it comes to Megaten games. Yeah you make choices but every protag has a canon personality that is also reflect in cutscenes.

Except they don't, what you have upon game release is basic hints that people run with and then Atlus picks what they like and uses for more games.

So take P4, when it first released the protagonist has no established name, he has multiple personality options, the only hints you get of his character are things like Margaret calling him a heart breaker, and the fact he can date all the bitches and not get ballbusted for it.

You take that and you put it with the king's game and you get a chad, you get the anime and P4a and PQ responding to the chad memery, but the original game didn't paint him in anything except the lightest hints and touches.

This is especially true in P5, where they have given lots of "outspoken/assertive third options" in dialogues but they've lots of more neutral ones too. Over here people fucking love the christmas-cake eating little tit, and if that's true in Japan he'll get lots of supporting material that paints him as this hilariously confident cougar destroyer, but it might go different ways.

They're not cardboard cutouts, but they are so lightly designed so as to allow most idiots to do their pointless little "I must be every character I play or I can't enjoy this game" thing.

Do people do that in books or films? Do you have to insert yourself into every story?

I'm a sucker for characters with obvious fatal personality flaws who somehow manage to stick to their beliefs/habits until the very end when you and the whole world would expect him to change.
For me, it's purity in the face of adversity. Kinda like seeing a trusting girl being deceived time and time again still believing in others instead of turning evil.

Yeah, I think the general consensus is that the team spend a lot of time wrangling and clasping hands over extremely small issues like this. "Are we doing the right thing?" "Yes" "ok" is basically 50% of all phone conversations, when really up until Okamura the results are obviously extremely justified and positive, as well as fucking REQUIRED because of deadlines.
