Bearing in mind the fact that it is free and ~8 hours, is Cry of Fear a good game?

I've heard nothing but good things about it. It is supposedly top spook
it is. That doesn't mean it not flawed as fuck and some core mechanics like melee combat are utter trash, but the game is a messy yet intriguing experience.
there is so much suicide and depression in this game that it makes me uncomfortable.
GET SPOOKED FOR FREE, BETTER WITH FRIENDS
It's decent.
>CoF
always wanted to play it coop, could never get it to work, would play with any anons if yer interested
literally one of the best horror games ever made, afraid of monsters shitters need not apply
The OST is top tier my man, it makes the game.
>the best horror game ever made
>AoF shiters need not apply
but they're both made by the same people AND AoF is basically proto CoF
It's decent.
Relies too much on jump scares.
This game is good but will make you really stressed.
It's one of the best Goldsource mod release not too long ago, the weapons models and animations is extremely well made.
Worth a look, especially if you love the Silent Hill games.
Are you dense?
It has some super scary moments. For example, I found the apartment level to be particularly stressful.
this shit is good
Cry of Fear is amazing
It's made by a group of people who really love horror games even if they don't 100% get what makes them tick. It's a mash up of anything and everything they liked from other games.
On a technical level its fucking ridiculous that it's running on goldsrc, and is worth playing for that alone if you're into that.
Also it's free, so you've got nothing to lose with it.
>tried this game
>ended up crying because I was afraid
god damn
The story is godawful but I enjoyed the gameplay and atmosphere.
The co-op makes it more into a comedy game. Me and my friends just ran around beating everything with nightsticks.
Really? What didn't you enjoy about the story?
>Want to play this again
>Remember the forest
It had the potential to become the summerhit of 2009.
It got me scared a bunch of times. It's good
You didn't miss anything. Coop is a mess that isn't much fun to play.
I never finished the train station.
Who thought that was a good idea?
yeah it's one of the only games i've player where the themes seem like they were actually genuine
This game triggered my cousin to have a psychosis and he tried to cut off his own arm with a jigsaw.
true fucking story
It's obviously overexaggerated but the story still does a better job of representing mental disorders than, say, Hellgate.
it's a mixed bag, but as a free experience i'd definitely say yes.
pros
- some stuff in the game (mostly audio) is scarier than basically anything else in horror game history
- you get to explore some semi-real swedish environments, the fact that theyre modeled after real places makes it feel more real and scarier
- some neat monster designs
cons
- bad backtracking (not all backtracking is bad but this is)
- some things are noticeably low-poly or at a bad resolution
- sometimes you're forced to do melee combat which is more tedious than scary
mixed
- some voice acting is unintentionally funny
- jumpscares, some of them are effective and others are frustrating or predictable
personally i enjoyed it
Fuck, I obviously meant Hellblade, not Hellgate. Two different games.
lmao what
the train station is absolutely nothing compared to some of the stuff that comes after it.
I highly recommend playing it through - the way you grow to hate the levels you are in is actually part of what the game tries to evoke in you. It's not a comfortable game.
Pretty cool game but shit developer.
>- some voice acting is unintentionally funny
The monologue at the beginning is kinda memey.
>some voice acting is unintentionally funny
Is it unintentionally? I think there was one reference to The fucking Room. I think it was in the rooftop scene
>The longer the game goes on the more delusional you find out simon is
kid is worse than r9k
It might just be me, but I wasn't too scared playing it.
Once I figured out that if I heard a noise I should look behind me, because some scissor shit is gonna be charging.
Except those weird looking enemies that make you kill yourself. Those things were genuinely unnerving. Most enemies I tried to ration ammo, but if I saw one of those things, it was time to fucking unload.
Might go back to it now.
Its the only game I've played that I remember actually being scared at some points.
>o hai simon
simon's main board is definitely r9k
I FUCKING LOVE YOU SOPHIE
The guy that voices simon is pretty open about the fact that he had no idea what he was doing and just winged it for most of his recordings. He does get comparatively better/comfortable with line delivery as the game goes on.
I'm also pretty sure nobody on the dev team speaks english as their first language.
>simon's main board is definitely r9k
Try /dep/
>tfw the apartament level
>tfw the fucking woods
i've never been so scared in my life
the soundtrack is pretty good too
>yfw simon gets cucked
It's derivative as hell. Also, if one disregards that it's a mod, there isn't anything special about it, really. One could say, it's custom-tailored for those Amnesia/Slenderman/scream-at-the-lighest-fart letsplayers. Or was it released before that became a thing?
Anyway, I'd say, that, as far as HL1 mods go, Paranoia is a much more curious one, despite being shorter, not plagiarizing SH3 and containing (almost?) no screamers.
the sawrunners stress me out so bad. i always have to take off my headphones in whatever segment they appear in.
I didn't realize Sup Forums liked CoF so much.
Simon was literally never anything more than a beta orbiter.
He was worse than a cuck.
this game has a cucking storyline?
It's a part of the storyline.
Simon had a hard life
Simon gets cucked by a huge monster in a balloon chair.
that's pretty much the most well-written and thought-out part of the story, though.
Brian is literally elliot rodgers
captcha. brasil edgewood
>Brian
>my fucking face when the head-room
pic fucking related, that was pretty disturbing to be honest. Especially since the engine enhances the "unnatural" movements of the monsters and the twitching and the weirdness
>yfw you realize the apartment monsters are all children because they're the victims of the pedofile killer who left notes around the building
No idea how I ended up with Brian
forgive me, squidward.
>tfw reading those notes for the first time
>tfw all the endings are depressive
>tfw I have no face
>Be such a edgy, pathetic joke that the journal you cry into tries to kill you to make you stop
I think Cry of Fear and Condemned 1 are probably the best horror games ever made. Also the only ones I've finished.
Maybe Amnesia and sequels, too, but CoF and Condemned have actual gameplay.
I have no idea how people have the will to play Condemned. I've tried to play it several times and it's just too boring. Although I gotta give it to ya': Hitting hobos is so satisfying
I remember getting to the part where you go back to the apartment
I said fuck that
Absolute shit tier gameplay and a tryhard "so deep" ending that renders everything you did up to that point meaningless.
I don't understand Amnesia's popularity. It's not a very good game and I think Penumbra was better anyway.
Serious question: are there any other games that even come close to the dark, disturbiong themes presented in this CoF?
Afraid of Monsters
The only thing I didnt like about Afraid of Monsters was that colorful mansion in the middle of the woods. It felt too out of place.
Does Cry of Fear have a more consistent level design?
>CoF
>dark or disturbing
DUDE I'M DEPRESSED AND IN A WHEELCHAIR LMAO
>(one) ending
>t. didn't play the game
It popularized the genre of running away from the enemies.
Granted, there were many games before it that had the same idea but it became popular thanks to Amnesia.
It's literally Sweden nighttime.
is there a story to this game ?
sounds comfy, those fucking gloomy swedes, I like it.
i wish i had legs
All the Amnesia games are fantastically written. If you enjoy a genuinely unique and good horror story, you will enjoy Amnesia.
That's about it.
Resident Evil 7
you, youre sad and kill yourself, and get friend-zoned along the way
Yes, the story is 5/10 but the themes and the presentation of the story is 9/10.
Boy likes girl, girl doesn't like boy, boy REEEEEEs.
>le epic shitposting bait XD
Hill Residents: Redneck Rampage
no, that's literally what happens.
no, it isn't.
You're just projecting your own insecurities with girls onto the protagonist, whereas for him a lot of different factors played together which is pretty evident by the story presented.
you probably didn't play the game or understand the story.
>Beat the game in under 3 hours to unlock secrets
>Constant back tracking
>Remembers the forest bit with the chainsaw guy
>Can barely see in the forest
>the boat scene
Enlighten us, please
lad
>Oh boy, some more apartment like corridors
>Hmm, nothing in this room,bett-
>the lantern only lights up a metre in front of you
does this game have any waifu material?
He is literally being force-held in a mental hospital and you guys think that the girl who turned him down some time ago is his biggest trouble?
fuck me, you guys must be turbo-virgins.
>when you enter the room, there is a loading time
>when you try to exit the room, this happens
I nearly had a fucking heart-attack
fucking 10/10 jumpscare
only if you're attracted to suicidal beta males
He's not force-held in a hospital. You literally "find him" in his house. His problems include drugs and self-harm and being disabled DUH. People focusing on Sophie's rejection are just memeing.
It was good storywise, but using the HL Engine is just lazy imo
But they made it look so good for such an old engine
