separate because why the fuck would 2 swords be linked?

They're the exact same

Definitely the first
Leaves space for some build variety. I think it really sucked that ds3 replaced powerstance with these stupid dual wield weapons (anime moveset edition)

>not being able to powerstance two smelter swords

The first. More variety. Sword/mace masterrace of DW.

I've found that games that use the "one-item" system tend to actually give dual weapons unique move sets compared to the having two separate weapons.

If that's the case, right. Otherwise left has more flexibility and customization.

Type 1 is way harder to balance on the design side, more interchangeable pieces mean more interactions which might be over powered and go unnoticed by the development.

Something that's interesting to note is that Ragnarok Online does both of these in the same game, on the same character class no less.
Assassin's can dual wield two different knives/swords/axes (yes, they can use the basic 1-handed axe. I forget if they can use the base mace or not) or you can use Katars, which are sets of 2 identical.
But anyway, using 2 one-handed weapons is generally better because of their interactions, even though it locks you out of entire parts of your skill set.

Number 1:
>10 dps x 10 dps = 100dps
Number 2:
>20dps
Hmm really makes me think

Well that's exactly what happened in ds3 and as soon as you pick one of these up the games goes from dark souls to maximum anime which doesn't really fit the setting.
>be a knight just as usual
>find some dual wield great swords that make me magically fly through the air and shoot fireballs
>break the fucking metagame

...

Second is fucking retarded

You can have unique moves based on weapon style.
Make the ability require 2 weapons, shield, etc equipped in order to be used.

What games use the second system? I know Das3 did it for some of their weapons with special movesets but are there other games that do this?

Tales of Symphonia
The main character Lloyd dual wields swords but they all comes in pairs and you can't mix and match.

>have to loot both of them, while literally any other loadout needs one weapon
>might be unique, so you can't wear two of the same, best in slot weapons
I'll take option two.

Oh, forgot.
>have to roll against every other one-handed sword user

>first menu
>equip dual swords in each slot

The first for build variety, but if this is just an argument between the swords, still the first because double the crit chance.

If crits aren't a thing, still the first because incremental 10dps + 10dps damage will kill a non-multiple of 20hp target faster than 20dps swings will do, since half the swing time is wasted in the 20dps swords on that last hit. Or something.

Halo 2 was originally going to if you look at the infamous 2003 E3 Demo

>TFW love sword and board
>But dont want to be a tank

Conventional prere thought is dagger and shield is the most efficient way to break an emperium, higher dps and all.

In that case, your game choices are Monster Hunter, and Monster Hunter.
Enjoy.

None.

Dual shields.

Phantasy Star Universe. It's also very fucking confusing.

>Can equip a saber in one hand, and a handgun/scepter/dagger in the other (or mix however you want)
>Can't equip 2 sabers, 2 handguns, etc. like this
>But there are dedicated dual wield sabers, dual wield handguns, and so on if you want to dual wield those weapons.

Dragon's Dogma Assassin vocation?

Together, it's more likely to have a different moveset instead of "1h but you're holding an extra sword that you dont use".

Plus, usually separate means the off hand gets a damage or hit penalty.

Look kid. You don't think about info that isn't present. Whatever is given to you that is what you decide on. You ever do this during an interview trying to fill in info that wasn't given, you're going to be laughed at.

A HOO HOO HOO DURR
Shut up retard.

As someone who played assassin A LOT, shields are great, but you don't actually attack anything while you have one equipped.
They're for surviving your way to the Emp in WoE, not for actually killing it.
They're also good in some PvP fringe cases where you want to use Soul Breaker against a class that out ranges you, for protection during the fuck-long after delay that skill has

You use shields when you're trying to break an emp, not only for surviving but with a Thorny+Bison combo your dps will be way higher than dual dagger or katars.

you can't in b4 your own post if you are the OP, fucking newfag.

Left > Right
More customization is more hassle for the Developer, but the results for players can be much better potentially. An easy example:
>Path of Exile
>Introduces a large variety of 1H, 2H, Shields, and other stuff
>Players find unique interactions and setups that work really well that the developers never fully considered, such as an Ignite-based Cast When Damage Taken build that is borderline immortal through the use of a Unique Amulet, 2 instances of a special crafted mod, and a Unique Sword
The right is slightly better for MMO shit where all you care about is right gear for your class and usually don't care about unique interactions.

>path of exile
that game was fun back when the economy wasnt fucked and core items for the like 3 builds in the entire game that can kill uber atziri didn't cost multiple thousands of exalted orbs, meaning 99.9% of players can never afford those items. too bad that only lasted a few months.

Twin swords
Dual swords is 2 different weapons, meaning two different attacks are needed equaling to 10 DPS

>doesn't really fit the setting.
>japanese game about guy who literally cannot stop fucking dying traveling in a place warped by space time and fucking magic

It's gotten better in 3.0 in general. Economy isn't fucked, but the number of price-fixers is at an all-time high, which skews everything. I wish they'd either disable scraper interaction entirely or finally add an Auction House. Cause .trade has all the problems of an AH, but with other issues on top of that. Force everyone to use Trade Chat, give us a Bazaar location to trade in, SOMETHING besides this reliance on 3rd-party programs that so many people take advantage of.
Anyway, yeah. I am disappointed in the way they've been monetizing as well.
>Currency Tab is a Stash Tab that can hold basically every drop of currency you'll ever need in a League
>They finally put Perandus Coins as a dedicated slot
>At the same time, increase the Misc Slot from 5 to FOURTEEN
>New League features FIFTEEN new Currency items and Shards
>With Breach Splinters, that brings Misc Currency items to a whopping 20
Harbinger, current League, is basically "Buy Tabs, Goyim" the League, like holy shit. We get it, you want money. Haven't you choked inventory and Stash space enough with Divination Cards?

What if your skills are designed to use both weapons simultaneously?

Then why wouldn't you use double twin swords

You could dual wield sabers and handguns like that, but you would only have access to single saber/handgun techs like that. You have to equip the twin weapons to use twin weapon techs.

Because the game wouldn't have them if they were designed with the possibility of dual wielding two individual swords.

...

Left : free to combine different elemental types for maximum effect.
Right : forced to use set combination of weapons, so limited customization.
Overall, both are good, depends on wether or not you want your dual wielders to be more OP or not, force a specific playstyle etc...

Does either have a critical hit chance?

Separate makes more sense on the equipment screen, but generally dual wielding is usually better in games that treat dual weapons as its own weapon type, since it forces them to associate a specific set of animations with dual wielding, instead of just applying generic one-handed weapon animation to both hands.

basically this, left leaves a lot more wiggle room for elitists to min-max combos and rise to the top.

Right is a more "everyone equal" communist approach, if you will.

Oh, and separate weapons tends to look lame aesthetically too, since they're either identical or completely mismatched. If you're gonna make them complimentary, you might as well just design them as a set. Though it would be cool as a sidequest to be incentivized to find the other half of a pair of legendary twinblades.

>*pomf* what are we gonna do on the table

left.

Option 1.
