What's wrong with rec threads?

Sup Forums has a strongly anti-newcomer mentality to protect its topical nature - attract too many newcomers and you attract non-relevant content that comes with them, and if you don't teach newcomers of strict rules then you risk that kind of content taking over the board.

One of the things Sup Forums does due to this is disallow recommendation threads, since the idea is that anyone who really wants something can do some simple research of genres and read recommendations online quite easily, or can learn what Sup Forums as a general consensus considers good or bad through osmosis.

Recommendation threads on their own aren't a bad thing, they're good for potential discussion, but they're also overdone and welcoming to newcomers who would get the same info from lurking anyway.

Sup Forums allows rec threads because it doesn't share the same mentality towards newcomers (as a whole), and isn't as strict to them.

there is a constant stream of content in anime, obviously the classics are great, but you can only discuss them so much. the board also has pretty heavy moderation, but looking at this place, maybe that's not such a bad thing.
