I recall reading that the developers made the teaser trailer as if it would be a ps4/XBone game. But when they were made aware it was for WiiU, a shitton of features were cut to accomadate.

2D sonic isn't hard to make right, if the developers don't get too lazy. the other factor is of course, timing. and after several bad to subpar attempts, now is a good time to take advantage by going back to the series' roots (or capitalize on the nostalgia, depending on how you wanna see it).

but how long are we gonna see this success? SM will likely see a sequel, but capitalizing on nostalgia can only take you so far. Even capcom didn't give us Mega Man 11, knowing this. by the 3rd or 4th sequel, people will get tired of this eventually, and will start questioning sega for some level of innovation that's more befitting of modern gaming, i.e; a 3D game, most likely.

Sonic Forces is coming, but based on previous track records, expectations are low. and if that bombs, Sega still needs to figure out how to fix 3D sonic, while 2D sonic is in the limelight.

The sonic racing game is an absolute blast bro.

I mean, they kinda have, as seen with Sonic 4. They just weren't that great.

People keep saying "SONIC CAN NEVER WORK IN 3D EVER" but Sega/Sonic Team can hardly even get it to work in 2D either.

Sonic Advance got 3 games so maybe we can hope for something here, especially since the original Sonic games are a trilogy if you ignore the bits and bobs.

Maybe they'll let Pagoda West do a 3D sonic, polygon style. That'd be neat.

Dimps use to be a fine studio before they just seemed to start losing the plot, though their fetish for speed boosters and bottomless pits were always prevalent in all their Sonic games, even their good ones like the Advance and Rush games.

Even if they finished it the game would still be a turd. No one liked Sonic 06's dumb side missions or story at all.

The game was rushed as hell and they knew that but SEGA wanted that game out during Sonic's anniversary no matter what. It's not an exaggeration to say they shipped an unfinished game.

Like it or not, 3D Sonic is more popular and makes more money.

I feel like Sonic Team should just become Puyo Team at this point and leave making Sonic to fan groups. Taxman and crew keep making Mania sequels while Lange and crew make Sonic Utopia official.

Even if the game was rushed to hell and back, I have absolutely no idea how having to reload the entire hub world just for a side-mission giver to present one line of dialogue, then reload the entire hub world again for the actual side-mission made it past the first month of development.

Not that it really matters. Sonic 06 is fundamentally mediocre at best. Being a broken mess is almost a saving grace for the game. At least people remember it nowadays in a so bad it's good way. If it functioned as well as it could it would have just led sonic to a slow painful death of mediocrity rather than forcing sonic team to either shape the fuck up right goddamn now or die instantly following it.

I'm pretty sure the Mania devs made XG which was pretty damn good.

It just had a shit ton of padding to increase playtime.

Then another group of people used that engine to make Sonic Nexus that showed the amount of effects and shit the engine could also do. Stealth made a Sonic level maker and was the head of Sonic Megamix's dev.

Being incredibly incompetent morons with their heads shoved far up their asses. They should've never been allowed to develop another Sonic game after the colossal failure that was Sonic '06.

This is SONIC we're talking about. A Metacritic score of 86 may not be so impressive for Mario or whatever, but for Sonic, whose Metacritic scores for recent games tend to be in the 70's or below, it actually is quite impressive.

They've only recently started letting non-Japanese devs touch Sonic for major titles.

Being broken up, being put back together, having Sega constantly fucking with their projects, being forced to reinvent Sonic to try to recapture the magic because no one believed that it would ever sell as a 2d game ever again and making levels in which you could go super fast on in 3d take a shit load of effort to model for the level of polish that Sega wants. It took a bunch of fan game makers doing remakes on mobile to convince Sega otherwise.
