Nintendo polish is probably the best polish in all of video games. They take that extra time to really hit home things like this where other devs may spend it elsewhere

It's easy to make really high detail models and then scale them down in order to future-proof the designs. Nintendo focuses on making all their characters look like the plastic amiibo figures

Honestly despite what Luigi fanboys say Mario has more to him than the average gaming mascot. His excitable Italian manchild thing stands out among Nintendo's big names.

Just in his nose. Skin is a smooth as plastic.
It just looks that way because of the lighting. If you up the contrast you can see the pores much clearer.

I hate how when devs first realize they can use textures on models without it looking awful, the first thing they do is make the texture far too large just to make sure you fucking notice it. It looks awful.
For a small while they had giant goofy glove fabric and too-detailed quills on Sonic renders.
